Best Nursery Night Lights for Babies and Toddlers

Having too much light in the middle of the night can jumpstart your little one into thinking it’s time to get up. My overall top pick for a nursery night light or lamp is the Hatch Baby Rest Night Light. You can use it for diaper changes or nighttime feedings. Then as your child grows, you can use it as a comforting night light for them. The app lets you control both light and sound from your phone.

Best Baby Night Light Overall:

For a traditional night light, both the Eufy and Vont nightlights turn on/off based on a sensor. The Munchkin and Night Light for Kids with Charging Pad are simple and portable nightlights. The Reacher and Hatch both include a sound machine but the Hatch is also able to connect to your smartphone.

The Hatch Baby Rest Night Light is completely programmable and uses a smartphone app. You can set the light to a wide variety of different colors. So if your child has a favorite color or you want it to match your nursery theme, this is a great option for you! There are 12 different songs/sounds to choose from, all controlled from your smartphone as well.

One really neat feature that the Hatch Baby night light has is that you can program it to give your child an “OK to wake time” signal. You can set the lamp to change colors at a certain time. This teaches your child when it is okay to go wake mom or dad, or if they need to wait a bit longer to do so.

The Hatch Baby night light is pricey, but it’s a neat gadget if you’re into high-tech things.

Night Light for Kids with Charging Pad

The Night Light for Kids night light does so many things well. It has a couple of different settings to fit any need. You can have it at a dull glow, or you can have it much brighter. Either way, it’s a filtered LED light with no blue light on the spectrum. You can control all settings by sapping either the top of the egg-shaped lamp or tapping the logo on the side.

If you want to change it to bright light, you can use the button on the bottom. In this “portable” mode, it makes a legitimately great night light to take camping or on the road. The light in this mode is bright white, and you can have it at different levels of dimness. You can even flash it at the brightest setting for SOS mode in case of emergency.

This baby night light will get you through up to 150 hours on the dimmest level or 4 hours at the brightest level before you need to recharge the battery. You have the option of plugging it directly into the base from the wall, or you can use the wireless charging pad/base that’s included.

This option is 100% baby safe and non-toxic made with silicone. It’s a great choice to grow and travel with your kiddo!

The REACHER R2 White Noise Machine and Night Light provides a dimmable night light with settings from 0 to 100. It also doubles as a sound machine with 31 different choices.

There are 8 different soft colors, each of which is dimmable. This allows you to find the right brightness level for your activities in the nursery from feeding, to trying to find things, to changing a diaper, or just sleeping.

The sound machine is worthwhile in its own right. The 31 soothers include 17 natural sounds like waves, rain, wind, and crickets, as well as 14 white noise and fan sound options.

You can use either the sound machine, the night light or both. It can also be set to automatically turn off after 1, 3, or 5 hours.

The Reacher R2 is powered by a USB cable that can plug into an adapter that is included or another device that has USB ports.

If you’re looking for a basic night light that you can plug into an outlet, the Eufy Lumi Plug-in night lights are a great option. These are extremely energy efficient. These lights automatically turn on when it is dark in the room, and they provide a nice glow of light. Having one of these in your child’s room is great if your child is afraid of the dark. Honestly, I don’t like sleeping in a completely dark room, so I have used these as a way to add just the smallest amount of light to keep me more comfortable.

They aren’t super cute or fun or anything, but they are a quick way to add just the right amount of light to your nursery for diaper changes or middle-of-the-night feedings. And they come in packs of multiples, so you can light hallways or bathrooms as your little one grows and gets themselves up in the middle of the night.

  • Stays cool to the touch
  • Runs on 3 AAA batteries
  • Automatic shut off feature
  • Cute!

The Munchkin Light My Way does what a nightlight should do and then some. It works great on a shelf in your child’s room to provide a bit of extra light so it’s not completely dark. It can also be used as a light to read books by. This light isn’t super bright, so it will have to be held right up to the book (e.g. for reading a book under the covers). It’s almost a night light toy!

The Munchkin Light My Way light also has a handle, so as your child grows, and needs to get up to go to the bathroom in the middle of the night, this light could serve that purpose as well. And, it will automatically shut off after 20 minutes, so it won’t stay on all night and drain the batteries!

The Munchkin Light My Way light lets off just the right amount of light to be perfect for diaper changes in the middle of the night. It is also great for nighttime feedings in your best baby glider.

When my son was first born, we didn’t think to have a night light. So when I would go to change him in the middle of the night and turned on the lamp, it would wake him up and be hard to get him back down. A dim night light is crucial for these early days where you’re trying to get your little one into a nightly rhythm.

Possibly the best part – the Munchkin Light My Way light is cheap! It really is one of the cheapest options, especially if you are looking for something fun and cute. Plus, it comes from Munchkin – a trusted brand.

Consider this one of the essential pieces of baby gear that you can’t live without!

Possible downfalls?

  • It requires 3 AAA batteries – this means you’ll be replacing the batteries every few months or so – an added cost.
  • Only one brightness setting – the brightness of this light cannot be adjusted at all.

Another low cost and very functional night light alternative for getting safely back and forth to the nursery is the Vont ‘Lyra’ LED Night Light, Plug-in, (6 Pack). These are very popular on Amazon because of their price but also because they have some unique features.

The lights automatically turn on when they sense low light or darkness. They plug directly into the wall, like many alternatives, and cost less than 40 cents per year in electricity.

If you don’t really want lights on except when you get up, AMIR makes a battery powered nightlight that senses your motion and turns on only when you are up and about.

How to Choose the Best Baby Night Lights

Key Features

Some basic features to keep an eye out for when looking for a lamp or dim night light for your baby’s room:

  • Brightness – You want a light that is dim enough to not wake up your baby too much, yet gives off enough light to be able to see what you’re doing (i.e. a soft glow light)
  • Child safe – Look for lights that remain cool to the touch, and don’t have wires or small parts that could endanger your child.
  • Battery vs plugin
    • Batteries you need to replace, but if it plugs in, then you’re dealing with cords. They both have their pros and cons, but if you want one your child can carry around, opt for a battery-powered one.
  • Long-lasting – You want to get as much use out of it as possible!
  • Multiple light settings – Many lights let you adjust the brightness, glow, or even color of the lamp. Some lamps even turn into projectors, like all the projector soother choices in our big projector for the nursery review.

Other Extras to Consider

  • Sound machine – They do have sound machines that come equipped with a lamp. This is a great way to knock out two things you’ll need with just one purchase.
  • Looks – cuteness factor – You may want your lamp to match the rest of your nursery. Whether that means you want it to be animal-themed, a certain color, etc.

They have all kinds of options out there – it really depends on what features you want and how much you’re willing to spend. They even have nightlight-sound machine-oil diffusers! I do like the idea of combining multiple things into one, like the sound machine + nightlight. Overall, I still love the Munchkin nightlight because of its versatility.
