The Best Lightweight Jogging Stroller

Jogging is a great way to exercise and spend time with your baby. Before we launch into our picks, just remember – safety first. While many of the best jogging strollers will accommodate an infant seat, it’s best not to jog with your baby until he or she is at least six months old or old enough to support his or her own head. Also, keep in mind that jogging with a stroller is basically a resistance workout, so start slow and build up speed and distance as your body adjusts.

Best Lightweight Jogging Strollers

Although it is a little pricey, the Allen Sports Jogger is our lightest option at only 21 lbs; whereas the lowest priced stroller is the Baby Trend Expedition, which is the heaviest at 27 lbs but this option does come with an infant car seat. All weighing 25 lbs, the Joovy Zoom, the BOB Rambler, and the Thule Urban Glide 2 are high cost, premium options.

There’s one more model that I haven’t talked about yet, the Joovy Zoom Lightweight Jogging Stroller. This is a truly lightweight and easy-to-use stroller that works perfectly for the more casual runners out there. It will certainly get you through a few miles a day with zero problems.

This runs straight due to the straight rear axle, the lockable front swivel tire, and the full stroller suspension system. The tires themselves are air-filled, pneumatic tires. There’s an included air pump for emergency fill-ups, and there is also a linked back parking brake for easy stops. The 16 inch rear wheels and 12-inch front wheel ensure that you can tackle any terrain, from a city sidewalk to a mountain trail.

Parents will love the style and function of this stroller. The durable frame is made from graphite-colored aluminum, with black rims for a sleek look. It folds up quickly and easily, with an auto-locking mechanism once folded. And if you need a little more storage, the wheels easily pop on and off to save storage space. And speaking of storage, there is a parent organizer on the handlebar, a big bottom basket, and some mesh pockets on the side for holding your kiddo’s stuff.

Rest assured that your kiddo will be happy in this jogging stroller, too. They can ride in it all the way up to 75 pounds (which is basically a 3rd grader!). There’s a high riding seat for better views and fit of bigger kids, a super tall seat back, seat recline, a 5 point safety harness, and lots of ventilation for a cool ride. Oh, and don’t forget the massive sun canopy.

The Joovy Zoom Lightweight Jogging Stroller is listed on our top-rated jogging strollers. Check it out.

Baby Trend Expedition Jogging Stroller

The Baby Trend Expedition Jogger Stroller is our pick for the best budget-friendly lightweight jogging stroller. The Baby Trend Expedition is an affordable, user-friendly option.

The Baby Trend Expedition has features that are a must for any jogging stroller. This best stroller features large bicycle-style tires, a front tire that can swivel for easy maneuvering or be locked into position for jogging, and an adjustable canopy with a sunroof.

The Expedition also has both a parent tray with two cup holders and a child tray with two cup holders so both you and your child can stay hydrated. An extra-large storage basket helps you keep necessities close at hand, and the stroller folds up easily with the use of a trigger release. Footrest reflectors enhance visibility, and the seat reclines for your child’s comfort.

While the Expedition is a great product for the price, the cost savings do come with some sacrifices. The Expedition will take a car seat to become a jogging stroller travel system, but the stroller is only compatible with Baby Trend Flex-Loc or Inertia Infant car seats. If you have one of these car seats, you’re in luck. If not, you might want to look at a jogging stroller with a universal adapter or consider a travel system.

The Expedition also has a weight limit of 50 pounds considerably less than the 75-pound weight limit available on other models. We also found that the front wheel tends to wobble at high speeds. This may not be an issue for casual users, but avid runners may want to consider a different model.

Still, given the affordable price of this jogging stroller, parents may not mind a little wobble if it saves them several hundred dollars. The Expedition should be at the top of the list for parents looking for the best lightweight jogging stroller that doesn’t break their budget.

NexGen Chaser Jogger Stroller

Every dollar counts when you have a family. And it seems that the lighter the stroller, the higher the price tag. If you want premium features, a lightweight, and a reasonable price, the NexGen Chaser Jogger Stroller is a great pick. This stroller weighs 26 pounds, which is certainly on the light end of the spectrum.  With a quick and small trigger fold, the light and compact Chaser can easily travel with you without hogging too much space in your trunk.

One of the things I like about the NexGen Chaser is that it is self-standing when folded. I love seeing this feature in the best stroller because it does make them so much easier to store. It also has all the jogging stroller must-haves such as the lockable swivel front wheel, Race Tec pneumatic wheels and shock-absorbing suspension, padded reclining seat with a five-point harness, large UPF 50+ canopy with peek-a-boo window, and under-the-seat storage basket. This jogger also has cup holders for both parent and child and it even has a cell phone positioner so your phone can go with you and track all those miles.

This stroller is actually designed by Baby Trend and it’s very affordably priced. It’s even compatible with the Baby Trend Ally Car Seat. However, while the fold is self-standing, it doesn’t lock. The handlebar isn’t adjustable, either. Still, you can’t beat the 26-pound product weight. If both stroller weight and price are primary concerns, the NexGen Chaser is the best lightweight jogging stroller for you.

(This only comes as a travel set at the moment but the price is nice and it comes in two colors).

BOB Rambler

BOB designs baby gear for active parents and their jogging strollers cater to the needs of serious runners. The BOB Rambler is the brand’s lightest jogging stroller and is the best lightweight jogging stroller for active parents who are willing to make the investment to enhance their fitness routine.

The BOB Rambler sports 12-inch air-filled tires with a lockable swivel front wheel. The stroller is designed on a mountain-bike-style suspension system, meant to ensure your child’s comfort no matter what bumps come your way. The aluminum frame saves pounds, keeping the jogging stroller’s weight right at 25 pounds. An extra-large canopy with built-in SPF protects your child while adding extra sun protection, and the padded easy-to-recline seat keeps your child comfortable on long rides.

The 75-pound weight limit means that your child has plenty of room to grow, and the adjustable handlebar means that the stroller can be used comfortably by parents of all heights. The included wrist strap will keep the stroller from getting away from you while jogging, and the wheels can easily be removed for compact storage.

The BOB Rambler can also be converted into a travel system with the purchase of a BOB Infant Car Seat Adapter. This item is sold separately but is compatible with all major car seat brands. A parent console and snack tray are not included, but both items can be purchased separately. For serious runners who want a lightweight jogging stroller, the BOB Rambler is your best bet.

Thule Urban Glide 2

For parents who want a premium stroller, the Thule Urban Glide 2 is your best bet. This updated version of the Thule Urban Glide adds a handbrake for added control on hilly terrain. While strollers with handbrakes tend to be heavier, the Urban Glide 2 still weighs in at just 25.3 pounds. The large 16-inch rear wheels and swivel front wheel enhance maneuverability, and the front wheel can be locked into place for jogging.

The stroller features a one-handed, compact fold system, a child seat that reclines with one touch, smooth suspension, and an ergonomically designed adjustable handlebar. Reflective rims on the wheel and a reflective edge on the canopy enhance visibility, and the jogging stroller comes with a large cargo basket with a zip-top cover, rear mesh pocket for parent access, and two mesh compartments that can hold your child’s snacks or toys. The Thule Urban Glide can be used with children weighing up to 75 pounds, allowing plenty of room for your child to grow.

The Urban Glide 2.0 can be converted into a travel system by adding a car seat adapter. Several other accessories are also available, allowing you to customize this best stroller to fit your needs. The biggest drawback to this stroller is the price. The Thule Urban Glide 2 is definitely the Cadillac option. However, if you are an active parent who wants both a lightweight stroller and the added security of a handbrake, the Thule 2 is the best lightweight jogging stroller for you.

Allen Sports Premier J1 Jogger

Every pound counts when you’re pushing a jogging stroller, especially on that one last hill at the end of your run. If you’re looking for the lightest jogging stroller you can find, the Allen Sports Premier J1 Jogger is a great pick. Weighing just 21 pounds, the J1 is the lightest jogging stroller we surveyed.

Like many of the high-end jogging strollers, this model has quick-release 16-inch pneumatic tires. There is great suspension for a smooth ride and the rear axle is raised so that you can run with a full stride, which is a feature that a lot of other choices don’t have. Between the wheel release and the lightweight aluminum frame that folds up, this is convenient to take out and about in even a normal-sized trunk.

For your child, there is a padded seat with a safety harness. You can adjust the seat to recline back so that baby can grab a nap or so baby can sit up straight and check out the sights. The large canopy doesn’t have a peek-a-boo window and it’s a bit thin, but it’s a great size. The storage compartment underneath is a good size, but the raised rear axle does mean that some storage space is sacrificed.

While this isn’t the most well-known brand on the list, it is a solid offering. Allen Sports really took the need for a lightweight stroller and designed the J1 accordingly. It beats the second-lightest stroller on this list by over 4 pounds! Combine that with the raised rear axle that allows for a full running stride, and you have a stroller that will make avid runners look twice.

Other Jogging Stroller Choices

If you read each of the reviews above, you can easily see why each of the choices listed here made the cut. But something to remember when shopping for the best jogging stroller for your family is that there are other options out there as well.

If you already have 2 or more kiddos or want to expand your family soon, you may want to consider one of the best double jogging strollers. All of these side-by-side jogging strollers work perfectly for 2 kids. Not to mention, a lot of the choices on this list have extremely comparable double versions, so you know they’re top-notch.

Also, consider whether you’d like to make your jogging stroller into a travel system. Some of the strollers on this list will accept a car seat with the correct adapter. You can also purchase a jogging stroller travel system right out the gate so that you can hit the pavement from day 1 after baby’s birth (more like day 60, am I right?).

FAQs – Lightweight Jogging Strollers

What is considered lightweight for a running stroller?

There are hundreds of strollers out there, ranging in weight from the single digits all the way up to 50 pounds or more! When it comes to pushing a stroller during a run, you’ll notice that difference in weight very, very quickly.

For a jogging stroller that’s lightweight, look for anything under 30 pounds. If you can get it under 25 pounds, even better!

Just be aware that with the lighter weight often comes a reduction in features in order to keep it as light as possible.

Does my jogging stroller need a locking front wheel?

You might think this is a silly feature, but it’s not.  A locking front wheel is a necessity in any stroller that you’ll be jogging or running with.

Picture it – you are out running with your front swivel wheel. It hits a little rock and turns sideways. You are going too fast and with enough force that the stroller veers quickly to the side and you go soaring over the top of it. You, stroller, and baby are doing cartwheels down the road. That doesn’t sound fun, does it?

That’s exactly why you lock that wheel. Yes, it makes turns annoying, but better that than a crash.

What age does my baby need to be before we start running together?

If baby is younger than 6 months old, you might want to leave them home. Experts (and nearly all jogging stroller manufacturers) suggest that you wait until 6 months to run with a baby. Why? They have weak neck muscles and aren’t coordinated enough to keep themselves sitting upright during a bumpy ride.

While I’m all for a dedication to exercise, it’s not worth making your baby uncomfortable or jeopardizing their health for a run. Just wait until they have the needed muscle control.

Can’t I just use my regular stroller for jogging?

We’ve all thought about taking our everyday use stroller for a spin around the block when the urge to run hits. But it’s really not the best idea. Regular strollers just don’t have the suspension, tires, steering, and general build to take on high speeds.

If you’ve ever tried running or speed walking with a normal stroller, you’ll know what I mean. It kind of feels like the stroller is going to break into pieces and collapse at any moment. And more often than not, baby is jiggling and bumping and you start to wonder if baby can get shaken baby syndrome from a bumpy stroller ride (don’t worry, they can’t).
