Gerber Soothe

Gerber Soothe is an infant formula meant for newborn babies up until 12 months old. Gerber is known for their quality and value when it comes to baby products, and this formula is no exception. If you have a fussy, gassy, or colicy baby, you are probably on the hunt for a formula that will ease these symptoms. This formula is known for being a gentle and good tasting formula that can help reduce discomfort caused by gastric distress.

GMO Free

This baby formula is GMO free. GMO stands for Genetically Modified Food, and many people believe that GMOs aren’t great for human consumption. Since babies are getting some of their first nutritional intake from formula, it is probably best to leave GMOs out of their food. This Gerber formula is certified GMO free, which is a big plus for me when it comes to a healthy baby formula.

Colic Fighting Probiotic

Colic happens in up to 10% of babies. It can be overwhelming and frustrating when your baby cries for what seems to be absolutely no reason. Gerber Soothe has a special probiotic in the formula, called L. reuteri. This probiotic is proven to reduce crying from colic by up to 50%. Probiotics, in general, are great for gut health, and babies need help in developing proper gut balance when they are formula few. By including this strain of probiotic, Soothe really gets a let up on the competition.

DHA, or Docosahexaenoic acid, is an omega 3 fatty acid that is found in the human body. DHA is one of the major building blocks of the brain and is needed for eye health as well. Some people are lacking DHA in their diets, but babies should not be part of that population. Gerber Soothe includes the expert recommended about of DHA, so that you know your baby is getting exactly what they need for brain and eye health.

Comfort Proteins

Proteins from milk or soy are generally what cause babies to have stomach discomfort from formula. Soothe baby formula has a unique comfort protein instead of typical proteins. These are smaller proteins that are easier for your baby to digest, which helps them avoid any digestive discomfort. Smaller proteins generally means less gas and less colic.

Good Taste

Many baby formulas don’t taste that great. In fact, it can be hard to get your baby to take them at all. When it comes to alternative formulas such as gentle or colic versions, the taste can be even harder for your little one to accept! Luckily, Gerber Soothe has a mild taste that many babies seem to tolerate and enjoy. It can take several tries to find a formula that your baby will drink. I like that the Soothe formula is known for it’s great taste, and it’s part of the reason I think it is a better choice in the debate of Enfamil Gentlease vs Gerber Soothe.

Possible Drawbacks:

Gerber Soothe is not the cheapest formula on the market. However, the cost is pretty much equal to Enfamil Gentlease. Since I consider this to be a specialty formula for fussy babies, it makes sense that it will cost a bit more. Unfortunately, that might put this formula out of reach for parents on a strict budget. Deals can be found online to bring that cost down, so be on the lookout!

Some babies will end up constipated from this formula. This generally will mean it isn’t the right formula for them, and you will need to keep trying. This can happen with any formula, but I had to mention it in case you end up having this uncomfortable issue.

Water Temperature

Since Gerber Soothe is full of probiotics for gut health, you have to make sure that you don’t make this formula with water that is too hot. If you have been making formula with near boiling water and then letting it cool down, you will have to stop. Hot water can kill off the probiotics in Soothe, making it less likely to help with colic and gut health.

Gerber Soothe Formula Features:

  • 22.2 Ounce container makes 40 bottles (4 ounces each)
  • This formula is stage one for birth through one year
  • Supports digestive health
  • Supports immune health
  • Reduces colic and gas
  • Easy to digest

Enfamil Gentlease

Enfamil is another top contender when it comes to baby formula. The company is known for it’s safe and easy to find formulas, of which there are many variations. If the original does not work for your baby, many people will turn to Enfamil Gentlease. Gentlease is meant to help calm a colicky baby, and be extra gentle on their developing digestive systems. Although I find Enfamil Gentlease to be a good choice for a baby formula, I do believe that the formula about, Gerber Soothe, edges out this one in the debate of Enfamil Gentlease vs Gerber Soothe.

Inositol and DHA

Inositol and DHA are both building blocks of the brain. Enfamil Gentlease is one of the only infant formulas that has inositol as an ingredient. Inositol is also found in breastmilk. Colostrum, the milk substance that is produced right after giving birth and before milk first comes in, is also high in inositol. Both ingredients are needed for brain health, however, there is a bit of controversy over whether synthetic inositol is as good as when it is naturally produced.

Like the Gerber Soothe formula that I recommend above, Gentlease is also GMO-free. There is no need to worry about genetically modified food being in your baby’s formula with either of these choices.

Triple Health Guard Blend

The Triple Health Guard Blend is a formula blend unique to Enfamil. It includes over 30 nutrients that are needed for your baby to grow. It also has more DHA than any other formula. While sometimes more can be better, in this case, I feel that the DHA in the Gerber Soothe is sufficient, but some parents may feel more comfortable having the higher levels available in the Enfamil.

Improved Formula is Closer to Breastmilk

While no formula can mimic breastmilk exactly, Enfamil has reformulated this one to come even closer to breastmilk than it did before. This is probably a plus if you are already breastfeeding your baby, and you are supplementing with formula. It’s also a good option if you want your baby to get the health benefits of breastmilk, but you prefer to use a formula to feed.

Many pediatricians recommend Enfamil formulas. They are generally more affordable than some other specialty formulas, and a lot of babies seem to tolerate both the taste and the digestive aspects of Enfamil Gentlease.

Possible Drawbacks

New Formulation Might Change Tolerance

This formula was recently re-done. The new formula may not be tolerated by your baby if they are already used to the old one! It has a slightly new taste and a bit of a thinner consistency. In trying to get this formula to be more like breastmilk, some of the aspects needed to be changed. If your baby is trying Gentlease for the first time, it probably won’t be an issue, but if you have already been using it, they might start to protest at the new taste!

Enfamil Gentlease Formula Features:

  • 21.5  Ounce container
  • Stage One Formula for 0-12 months old
  • Helps with Fussiness, gas, crying
  • Has DHA and Inositol
  • Premium Formula

Enfamil vs Similac

There are other choices available for good formulas. Specifically, Similac is a best seller and we compare baby formulas in this guide matching up Enfamil and Similac products head to head.

Bottom Line

If the question is just what works better when it comes to Enfamil Gentlease vs Gerber Soothe, there is not one right answer. Different formulas work better for different babies. It may take you seven different tries, or you might get the perfect formula on day one. Since these formulas are both in the “specialty” category, it makes sense that you have tried a few “regular” formulas before you land on these made for colicy babies.

However, because of the different features, I have to recommend Gerber Soothe as the superior formula for fussy, gassy, or colicy babies. The addition of special probiotics really helps. Enfamil is missing the probiotic strains that specifically help with colic. If you have a fussy baby, I would definitely start with Gerber Soothe formula, and see if it works for your family! Overall, you can’t go wrong with this formula that supports brain and eye health, helps to build a strong immune system, and includes probiotics for ideal gut health in your new born or infant.
