In addition, the pieces are washable, just in case, some sticky little fingers get on them.

Secondly, I find the train set to be reasonably priced, especially for what you are receiving. All the pieces are free of BPA, lead, and phthalates.

Finally, the train set is compatible with several others on the market, including Melissa & Doug, Chuggington, Brio, Kidkraft, Ikea, and Thomas & Friends.

The Simplay3 Carry and Go may not look like a typical train set, but it’s a great option for younger kids.

Firstly, some of the best train sets for kids don’t need fancy equipment. Little kids really just like pushing trains around and the Simplay3 Carry and Go provides just that.

In addition, it has two sides, allowing your kiddos to push around their trains or race cars around a track.

Secondly, it’s a track suitable for children of all ages. You can give your littlest ones age-appropriate cars and trains and the bigger kids can grab their Hot Wheels.

The table requires no assembly and has a carry side handle, making it easy for your kiddos to move it around their space. It is made of durable plastic, ensuring it can handle the roughness of race after race.

Finally, you don’t get any accessories with the Carry and Go, just the portable track, but if you have kids, you likely have plenty of cars, trucks, and trains laying around.

If you are needing to add toy cars to your collection, we have researched the best ones on the market your little one is sure to love.

Bigjigs Rail Fairy Town Train Set

The Bigjigs Rail Fairy Town Train Set is definitely the pinkest option on my list. Since my 3-year-old thinks everything should be pink in life, I know this one would be a hit in my house.

Firstly, the brightly colored train set comes with 40 pieces, including 16 wooden tracks, an engine with two carriages, signs, a bridge, free-standing houses, a helicopter, toadstools, and of course, fairies.

In addition, it is compatible with all other major brand wooden track sets. I always appreciate it when I can combine various sets. So if you have tracks from Thomas & Friends or Melissa & Doug, you will have no problem putting them together.

Secondly, the pieces are made from high-quality wood and provide a sturdy place for your kiddo to push their trains around. With the variety of tracks included, the options for designs are almost endless for your little one. The bridge allows for tracks to run underneath.

Finally, the ideal age for the Fairy Town Train Set is 3 and up, due to the small parts it comes with.

Play22 Wooden Train Set

Finally, if you are looking to add to your train collection, the Play22 Wooden Train Set will provide you with 12 magnetic trains.

Firstly, since the majority of the best train sets for kids don’t come with a ton of trains, you probably will hear your kiddos asking for more. What I like about the Play22 Wooden Train Set is both the price and quality. For just under $2 a train, your kiddo can have plenty of fun racing them around the track.

The trains are all brightly colored which I find to always be nice for kids. There is just something about fun colors.

In addition, the trains are made with durable wood and are lead-free. The trains can connect to one another with the attached magnets. It does include several cargo cars with a magnet attached on top, making it easy to lift with a crane.

Secondly, it includes a wooden storage box, making it easy for your little ones to clean up when they are done playing. I find if my kids know exactly where things go, they are much more likely to clean up.

Finally, the trains are compatible with wooden tracks by all major brands like Thomas & Friends, Chuggington, and BRIO. As a note, the train set does not include any tracks.

Melissa & Doug Take-Along Railroad

The Melissa & Doug Take-Along Railroad is the perfect travel set for young train lovers.

Firstly, the set provides a portable play surface so the youngest of conductors can play wherever they would like. It comes with 17 wooden pieces, including 4 train cars, a bridge, and some fun scenery to surround their track.

Secondly, there are no loose track pieces for this set. That part is all built into the portable carrying case. I find this to be an incredibly useful feature. All the pieces fold-up to make it easy to store until next time.

In addition, there is a convenient handle on top to make it easy for your little one to carry it around. You could even bring this one on an airplane to keep your kiddo entertained. Some of the stand-up pieces may fall over with turbulence but they will have no problem pushing their trains around on the track.

Finally, in my opinion, Melissa & Doug knows how to produce high-quality products at reasonable prices. I have never had an issue with any product I’ve had from them.

The Take-Along Railroad is best suited for children ages 3-5.

Best Electric Train Sets

The Prextex Train Set, Electronic Classic, and Hot Bee trains feature steam (smoke), lights, and sounds compared to the Polar Express train that only features train sounds.

Hot Bee Electric Train Toy

The Hot Bee Electric Train Toy is a fun starter set if you’ve never had an electric train set before.

Firstly, as far as your train goes, you get the following cars: passenger coach, coal car, steam locomotive, and cargo vehicle.

In addition, you get 8 straight and 2 curved tracks, allowing for multiple design methods. The set comes with 2 Christmas cardboard cutouts in case you want to use the train during the holidays.

Secondly, what makes the train set extra neat is the steam locomotive. It produces nontoxic smoke and makes authentic train sounds. It also has some fun light-up LED lights. An empty water bottle is included in your set. Just add water to it, pour it into your locomotive and it will produce harmless smoke.

In addition, for an electric train, I find the price to be very reasonable. Sometimes this type of train can really tick up in price. It does require 4 AA batteries which are not included. Since the price of the train isn’t too high, I’ll look past having to buy batteries.

Finally, I’ve had issues with electric trains where the tracks never seem to attach well. Overall, the train stays on the track while in use, but you might end up knocking it off when you turn it off and on. The switch is on the top of the locomotive, which if little hands are trying to use it, may cause it to get off track.

The train is recommended for ages 3 and up.

Electronic Classic Train Set

WESPREX Electric Train Set for Kids w/Headlight, Realistic Sound, Battery-Operated Classic Toy Train, 1 Locomotive, 2 Compartments, 10 Railway Tracks, Gift for Boys Girls Age 4 5 6 7 - Christmas

The Electronic Classic Train Set is an extremely affordable option when it comes to electric train sets.

Firstly, your set includes 1 locomotive, 2 compartment cars, and 10 tracks. In addition, the locomotive has a headlight and makes train sounds. It also has smoke that comes out of it. It does require 4 AA batteries, which are not included.

The two-compartment cars do not operate off batteries so you must have them attached to the locomotive in order for them to move.

Secondly, there are two different assembly methods. You can use all 10 tracks, 8 curved and 2 straight, or only use the 8 curved pieces to make a round track.

Unlike some other trains, you don’t add any liquid to make the smoke. Once the train is running, it automatically produces it.

Thirdly, you are unable to add tracks to the set, so if you are hoping to connect it to a current set, you will not be able to do so.

Finally, the train set is most suitable for children ages 5 and up. Make sure to keep little fingers off the track as the train is going around.

Lionel The Polar Express

Lionel Polar Express Ready-to-Play Battery Powered Model Train Set with Remote, Multicolor

The Lionel The Polar Express is a fun purchase, regardless of whether you are familiar with the movie or book.

Firstly, the Polar Express train has the added bonus of being operated by remote control. I’m always a fan of this because it means no little hands have to go for a moving train to turn it off.

In addition, the set comes with 32 pieces of durable, plastic track, a steam locomotive, a coal car, and two compartment cars. You are able to upgrade to a track that comes with additional pieces.

Secondly, the locomotive has a working headlight, makes train sounds, and plays sound clips from the movie “The Polar Express.”

The train is best suited for children ages 4 and up. The remote control will help younger kiddos be able to use it.

Finally, the train operates off 6 C batteries and the remote control requires 3 AAA batteries. The price of the train is already a little steep, so adding the cost of all the batteries is a bit much, but it does make for the perfect train around a Christmas tree.

Some reviewers found it difficult for the train to stay on track. If you are having this problem, make sure all your tracks are properly connected. If anything isn’t clicked in on the way, you are bound to have a derailment. It’s also important to have the tracks on a completely flat surface.

Prextex Toy Train Set

The Prextex Toy Train Set gives your little conductor the opportunity to set up several track configurations.

Firstly, the set comes with tons of tracks, a steam locomotive, a passenger car, and freight cars. The chimney on the steam locomotive produces smoke and has a red locomotive headlight. In addition, the locomotive produces sounds as it is running.

Secondly, there is a water tank in the locomotive to produce odorless smoke. The locomotive requires 3 AA batteries, which are not included.

The train set has three modes: running with light, steam, and sound, running without light, steam, and sound, and staying still with all 3 features. You adjust the modes from a switch on the locomotive train.

Thirdly, the tracks are made from durable plastic, which includes 12 curved tracks, 3 straight tracks, 1 cross-track, and 1 straight track with a handbrake. The tracks are wider than most train tracks on the market, which helps prevent any derailments.

Finally, the Prextex train set is suitable for children ages 3 and up. As with any electric train, make sure tiny fingers don’t make their own onto the track as the train is running.

Best Construction Train Sets

The Contruction Themed set includes the most pieces (226) compared to the Crane Train set which only includes 60 pieces.

Crane Train Set

The Crane Train Set is a great first wooden train set for kids. It has all the basics your child would need in order to set up an awesome train track.

Firstly, the set comes with 60 pieces, including a magnetic crane that rotates 360-degrees and can go up and down as it picks up its cargo.

The set comes with a variety of track styles, including curved, straight, and split-track pieces. In addition, it includes 4 trains and accessories like stop signs, a bridge, and trees.

Secondly, the beech wooden pieces provide durability to last throughout the years. The pieces are all free of lead, BPA, and phthalates.

When assembled as shown in the picture, it measures 32″ x 20″. However, the options really are endless when it comes to setting it up.

Thirdly, it comes with a storage box, making it easy to put the train set away when not in use.

Finally, the crane train set is compatible with Thomas, Brio, Chuggington, and Melissa & Doug train sets. The set is suitable for children ages 3 and up.

The Construction Themed Race Tracks Set is the perfect combination for kids who love both trains and construction trucks

Firstly, the set comes with over 200 pieces, including 192 tracks. In addition, you get 5 different cars, two race cars, and 3 smaller cars. It also includes an assortment of accessories to go with your setup. I know my kids would love the included crane.

The track can be set up in a variety of ways, including a 360-degree loop.

Secondly, the tracks are flexible, making them easy to assemble and disassemble. Since they are made of plastic, just be careful when you are taking them apart, to prevent any pieces from breaking.

The two race cars are battery operated and with the switch of a button, can race along the track.

Finally, AAA batteries are required for the trucks to run. Each truck requires two batteries. Unfortunately, they are not included. The cars seem to run through battery life fast, so I recommend investing in rechargeable batteries.

The construction race track is suitable for children ages 3 and up.

Best Thomas Train Sets

The Thomas & Friends Super Station (52x45x36 inches) is quite a bit larger than the Thomas & Friends Train Set (31.1×68.11×8.66 inches).

Thomas and Friends Super Station

Fisher-Price Thomas and Friends Extra Large Train Set with Reconfigurable Track, Motorized Thomas, Diecast Percy, MINIS James, Super Station, 3 years and up, Multivolor

The Thomas and Friends Super Station is the ultimate playset for Thomas lovers.

Firstly, there is so much that comes with the train set, it’s hard to decide where to begin. The superstation has over 35 feet of track and several different configurations.

In addition, the set includes over 100 pieces. While the set itself can hold up to 100 mini engines, the superstation only comes with 4: Thomas, James, Percy, and Harold.

Secondly, your little conductor will recognize many of the iconic locations that are included. Tidmouth Sheds, Knapford Station, Harold’s helipad, Brendam Docks, and Sodor Steamworks are just to name a few.

Also included is Cranky the Crane, who can lift the engines and cargo from the tracks.

Thirdly, the turntable allows your kiddo to stop the engines and change directions. The tracks can be set up as ramps, allowing your little ones to race their trains down on each side.

In addition, you are able to connect with other Thomas & Friends playsets. You are able to use the motorized Thomas & Friends trains.

Finally, the price is a bit high on the Thomas and Friends Super Station, so it likely would be a purchase for a special occasion. The receiver will be quite happy with their gift!

The set is ideal for children ages 3 and up. The set is large when all put together, so you want to make sure you have plenty of space. Also, be prepared to leave it up, as it’s a bit of a hassle to take it down every time your kiddo is done playing with it.

Thomas & Friends Train Set

Thomas & Friends Toy Train Set Loop & Launch Maintenance Yard With Thomas Motorized Engine & Carly The Crane For Kids Ages 3+ Years

The Thomas & Friends Train Set is the perfect train set for all Thomas the Train lovers.

Firstly, when you think of trains, you likely think of Thomas and his friends. My oldest son was obsessed with Thomas the train, and I’ll admit, I was a bit sad when he outgrew that stage of his life.

The Thomas & Percy train set comes with 35+ pieces and two motorized engines. Included in the pieces are adjustable tracks, a bridge, Bulstrode the boat, and some extra accessories to add some fun to your tracks.

Secondly, I love how the trains talk. They even recognize each other on the track and will talk to each other as they go past each other. The tracks can be transformed however your little conductor would like on the Island of Sodor.

You can either set the track up on the floor or on a table. It’s lightweight enough to store and change up where your little one plays with it.

In addition, the set is compatible with other Thomas & Friends tracks, so they can keep building on as much as they’d like. Unfortunately, any mini Thomas trains won’t work on the tracks.

Finally, the set is ideal for children ages 3 and up. You don’t want any little fingers to get stuck under the motorized trains.

Also, as a little tip from someone who has had some of the Thomas motorized trains, make sure to turn them off when not in use. My kids knew how to run through lots of batteries with them. Even better, invest in some rechargeable batteries!

Best Train Set Table

KidKraft Ride Around Train Set and Table

KidKraft Ride Around Town Wooden Train Set and Table with Helicopter, Airplane, Farm, Storage Bins and 100 Pieces, Compatible with Other Major Brand Trains, Honey
Price$$$$
Quality
Popularity

The KidKraft Ride Around Train Set and Table is an excellent option if you want to get the whole package and are okay with a little assembly.

Firstly, the 100 piece train set includes everything your little conductor needs to set up an awesome town for their trains to drive through.

From an airport with a control tower to a multi-level bridge and tons of extra accessories like street signs, cars, a helicopter, an airplane, and people, your kiddo will have no problem finding something to play with. There are plenty of tracks, curved, straight, and inclined, for your kids to get creative with.

Secondly, the train table is made of molded plastic and composite wood materials. It comes with an instructional manual on how to design the town as seen in the picture, however, your little engineer will have no problem coming up with their own designs as well.

In addition, the table comes with two plastic storage bins which are very convenient for the pieces not in use. The table is 49″ long, 34″ wide, and 16″ high. The height allows a child to sit and play at the table, as opposed to having to hunch over. The table and accessories together weigh 43 pounds.

Thirdly, the KidKraft train set is ideal for children ages 3 and up. There are some smaller pieces the little ones may be tempted to put in their mouth. Also, while any older child can play with it, I feel it’s best for a child up to the age of 6.

Overall, it’s not a huge table and might seem small for an older child. It also should not be sat on, because the boards in the middle are not sturdy enough to hold the extra weight.

Finally, the train set is compatible with all Brio, Thomas & Friends, and KidKraft train cars and playsets.

As a note, be prepared to spend at least 30 minutes assembling the table. You are provided with the necessary hardware, including an Allen wrench.

How We Selected Train Sets

Durability

When it comes to the best train sets for kids, I want something that will last. Kids can be rough with their toys, true, but I still want it to hold up.

When it comes to electric train sets, you want the pieces to stay together to prevent the train from de-railing. You also don’t want them to break easily. Electric train sets don’t typically come with a ton of tracks, so if one piece breaks, you may not be able to use it.

Size

Not everyone has space, nor wants the space, for a large train set or one that comes with a table. My list of the best train sets for kids covers a wide variety of sizes. Ideally, you find a set that fits your space the best. Whether it includes a table or not.

In addition, any train sets that come with their own storage container get major bonus points. When you purchase a train set, think not only about where you’ll set it up, but where you’ll store it.

Compatibility

In my opinion, the best train sets for kids work with other train sets. While wooden tracks typically work fine with a variety of brands, you won’t have that perk with electric train sets.

I’ve always enjoyed being able to grow my kids’ train track collection, by buying whichever brand I’d like. Some of the major brands that go together are BRIO, Thomas & Friends, Melissa & Doug, and Chuggington.

FAQs – Train Sets For Kids

Which is better: an electric or wooden train set?

I am very partial to wooden train sets. I’m quite confident my kids’ collection at this point is in the hundreds. I like their durability and how the options for setup for endless. I truly enjoy sitting on the floor with my kids and building a giant train track.

That being said, I think age is a big factor in selecting a train set. Electric train sets aren’t great for little fingers, because if they go to grab the train, they may run over their fingers.

If you are interested in other wooden toys for your children, we have a list of the best wooden toy cars here.

Is there an educational benefit to train sets?

While you might just think of a train set as a fun toy for your kiddos, it’s actually a great play for your little ones to work on their fine motor skills.

In addition, setting up the train tracks helps enhance creative thinking and boost their problem-solving skills. So while you might not want a house covered in train tracks, what your kiddos are doing with their train sets is not only fun but great for their development.

What should the best train sets for kids include?

For starters, you want to make sure you are getting both curved and straight pieces. It allows your kiddo to create a track that can connect on all sides. Most starter sets come with a few trains, but you likely will have to invest in some more.

Extra features include scenery, people, and buildings. While your kids can push their trains around without the extras, it allows them the opportunity to use their imagination and set up a whole town.

What is the best train set for children under the age of 2?

You likely noticed the majority of the best train sets for kids are suitable starting at the age of 3. The majority of the train sets come with small parts that can be a choking hazard to little ones who still put everything in their mouth.

Luckily, there are a few options for the youngest conductors, that allow you to add large vehicles to the track, without the worry of them putting small pieces in their mouth. In addition, I don’t recommend electric sets for young kids. There is the chance they will get their fingers caught under the train while it’s in motion.

I recommend sticking with wooden tracks and staying away from electric train sets until your child is at least 3 or 4 years old.
