The 15 Best Big Wheels

Big wheels first hit the market 50 years ago and have been a hit with children ever since.

Big wheels offer a larger front wheel and typically sit closer to the ground, making it a great first bike for even the littlest of kids.

Along with having fun, the best big wheels provide the opportunity for your child to work on their balance and coordination.

While the Razor RipRider 360 Caster Trike has castors for back wheels instead of tires, allowing the bike to have 360 degree spinning; the Angeles MyRider Midi Trike Bike offers solid, rubber tires that will never go flat for your little rider.

The Razor RipRider 360 Caster Trike has a very unique look about it and sets itself apart from the other best big wheels on the market.

Firstly, the back wheels are actually casters, as opposed to tires. The casters allow the bike to have a 360-degree spinning and resistance-free-drifting capability. In addition, the high-impact, front-wheel can never go flat, so you don’t have to worry about flat tires spoiling your child from having a good time.

Secondly, the handlebars come equipped with rubber grips, ensuring your child can have a strong hold on them. I feel this is especially important since the trike can spin in circles. You want to make sure your child has a firm grasp while steering. The RipRider is best suited for children ages 5 and up and has a maximum weight capacity of 160 lbs.

The bike itself weighs 15 lbs and measures 24.5″ x 25.5″ x 39.5″ in size. The frame is built from a steel metal design, providing durability for riders.

Finally, even though the bike sits low to the ground, always remember to have your child wear a helmet. I would also make sure to watch your kiddos when they use the bike. If they try to spin around too fast, they risk tipping over. In addition, it does not have any brakes, which can be problematic in some instances.

Knee and elbow pads are included with the bike, but you can choose the option to only buy the bike if you already have pads at home. The trike comes from the Razor brand, the same people who brought you their popular scooter. In fact, if scooters are more your child’s speed, we have the rundown of the best scooters for kids of all ages.

What I Love Most

  • Weight capacity of 160 lbs
  • 360 degree spinning capability
  • Rubber gripped handlebars

The Mobo Cruiser puts your child in the driver’s set with its dual-joystick rear steering. Your child will easily be able to maneuver around and make swooping turns.

Firstly, the low center of gravity ensures a stable ride for your child. It also makes it incredibly easy to get on and off. The frame of the cruiser extends, making it suitable for kids ages 3-5 (30-47 inches tall). In addition, it has a weight capacity of 100 lbs.

Secondly, it comes equipped with extra-wide, inflatable tires. The front tire measures 12″ and the rear tires measure 8″. Unlike other big wheels, the rear tires on the Mobo Cruiser are able to turn.

The dimensions of the bike are 29 x 22 x 17 and it weighs 21 lbs, making it a sturdy choice.

Finally, the cruiser is available in either pink or red.  The main complaint about the Mobo Cruiser is people having issues with the pedals falling off, so be sure to make sure they are securely attached before your child starts riding it.

Schwinn Roadster Kids Tricycle

Schwinn Roadster Bike for Toddler, Kids Classic Tricycle, Low Positioned Steel Trike Frame w/ Bell & Handlebar Tassels, Rear Deck Made of Genuine Wood, for Boys and Girls Ages 2-4 Year Old, Light Pink

The Schwinn Roadster Kids Tricycle provides a retro look and includes plenty of features for kids between 2 and 4 years old.

Firstly, the bike is built with a steel frame and provides a low center of gravity which is great for smaller children. It allows for easy access on and off the bike. The adjustable seat offers 5 different lock positions, which is perfect for your growing kiddo or for multiple kids to share. That is if your kids are willing to share with one another.

In addition, your child can make themselves known with the classic bike bell. The handlebars are also decorated with flowing fabric tassels, which I always find to be a fun accessory.

Secondly, the bike measures 26″ in length, 20.5″ in width, and 21.5″ in height. The bike is heavier than others on the list, coming in at just under 25 lbs. The maximum weight capacity of the bike is 60 lbs.

The front-wheel measures 12″ and the rear wheels are each 8″. The wheels are rubber tires, which may require inflating from time to time.

Thirdly, the bike is best suited for riding on asphalt. It does hold up better than some of the tricycles with plastic wheels, but it’s not recommended for going over grass or any rough terrain.

Finally, there are several color options to choose from: pink, blue, orange, red, teal, and black. Keep in mind, the trike doesn’t fold up for storage, so once it’s put together you will need the space in your garage to put it in.

The price is higher on the Schwinn Tricycle, however, I feel it is worth the investment. It is well-built, and if taken care of, can last through all your children. In addition, Schwinn makes quality products that last, so it is a brand you can depend on.

What I Love Most

  • 5 different seat positions
  • Comes in 6 colors
  • Steel frame

This bike is available in four different themes such as Blaze, Hot Wheels, and Harley Davidson. One of the best features is a hidden compartment under the seat to carry about their treasures.

Finally, while the trike is made of plastic, it has a wide, stable base ensuring your child has a smooth, safe ride.

Angeles MyRider Midi Trike Bike

The Angeles MyRider Midi Trike Bike is perfect for beginners, starting at 3 years old.

Firstly, the trike is built with a durable, steel frame supporting children up to 70 lbs. The innovative Vario seat can grow with your child. The seat is long, so if your child is smaller, they might have issues with sliding on the seat, making it harder to pedal. However, it means as your child gets older, they can better utilize the larger seat.

It is equipped with sturdy and solid rubber tires, which will never go flat. No need to worry about whether they are full of air so as your child goes riding off.

Secondly, the trike measures 30″ x 22″ x 25″ and weighs 20 lbs. The seat itself is 14.5″ high. I like that the bike comes completely assembled, so your kiddo can ride away the moment it comes.

There are no brakes on the bike, so make sure your child isn’t going down any hills while riding it.

Finally, the price tag is a bit high on the MyRider, however, it is very well-built and worth the investment if you are looking for a trike that will last.

What I Love Most

  • Longer seat
  • Durable steel frame
  • Supports up to 70 lbs

Thirdly, the bike is easy to assemble and no tools are required, except for a hammer to help the wheels go in.

Finally, while there are no handle brakes, if your child pedals backward, it will act as a brake. The bike won’t ride well over grass, and should really be used on concrete.

The Radio Flyer Junior Flyer Trike is a great introduction to riding a bike for children as young as two years old.

Firstly, the bike has a large front wheel, which will help your child turn as they are riding. The “grow-with-me” seat is adjustable, helping it fit children ages 2-5. The seat-back is low, providing a classic chopper-style tricycle.

The traction tread tires help provide a smooth ride for your child. In addition, it helps prevent slipping or spinning out. Keep in mind, the trike will ride best on asphalt or concrete. Your child will likely have a hard time pedaling over grass or gravel.

Secondly, the maximum weight capacity is 49 lbs. Remember, this isn’t the bike for older kiddos. It’s a great starter trike for kids just learning how to pedal. The trike is made of a molded plastic frame and provides durability for your growing child.

Finally, the tricycle measures 30″ in length, 19.5″ in width, and 17.6″ in height. The trike itself weighs just over 8 lbs, making it a great lightweight starter bike for your kiddo.

If you are looking for one of the best big wheels for little riders, check out the Radio Flyer Scoot. It’s the perfect introduction to pedaling for kids starting as young as one year old.

Firstly, the Scoot is very lightweight, coming in just under 6 lbs. It measures 22.5″ x 16.6″ x 17.6″ and will fit kiddos up to 3. The maximum weight capacity is 42 lbs. The wide wheels provide your child with a stable ride.

Thirdly, your child can use the compartment in the back for their snacks or favorite stuffed animal. We know they can’t leave home without either.

Finally, while I feel the Scoot is a great starter bike, I’m not sure it will work on any tall kiddos. It sits low to the ground, and any child with longer legs may have a hard time maneuvering it. It also does not have the best turn radius, which will help prevent any toppling over.

  • Low to the ground
  • A compartment in the back

Do you want to ride a big wheel? The Frozen 2 15″ Cruiser Ride-On is perfect for all the Anna and Elsa fans out there.

In addition, the bike measures 20″ x 22.5″ x 32.83″. The low-riding design makes it easy for your child to get on and off the bike, with its low center gravity. This also comes in handy for balance. A young child is more likely to have a hard time balancing, but when the seat isn’t too far off the ground, they are able to handle it better.

Secondly, the bike is best suited for children ages 3-7, with a maximum weight capacity of 70 lbs.  Keep in mind, you shouldn’t just base it on a child’s age. It’s always a good idea to look at the age, height, and weight recommendations to ensure you are getting a bike with an appropriate size for your child.

It does come with an adjustable seat, which makes it easy to continue to use as your child grows. I always appreciate it when my kids don’t outgrow something I buy quickly.

Big Wheels Compared

The table below compares only the recommended products on this page. A low or high Price means it is low or high compared to the other products listed. The Popularity Score reflects how often readers click on and buy the product. The Quality Score is our assessment of the overall performance and satisfaction with the product compared to others in the table.

How We Selected the Best Big Wheels

When you are looking to purchase one of the best big wheels on the market today, it’s important to look at all the features they have to offer. Since some of the big wheels I discussed have a higher price tag, it’s a good idea to know what makes these the best big wheels.

Durable Frame

The majority of the best big wheels come with a plastic frame, including the wheels. While they typically are durable enough to withstand the toughness of kids, they still have their drawbacks. If your plastic wheel cracks, it’s hard to replace. In addition, if you keep them outside, the wheels will begin to fade over time.

razor flashrider 360 caster trike

However, finding big wheels with a durable frame, regardless of whether it’s plastic or not, will help prevent any potential damage. Any steel frames will typically provide a much more durable frame and ensure your child can get plenty of use out of the bike.

Adjustable Seats

I really appreciate the best big wheels that can grow right alongside my child. Several of the big wheels on my list have adjustable seats, which not only makes the trike last longer for your kiddo but also means it can work for more than one child at a time.

As you are searching for big wheels for your child, keep in mind the age it is geared towards. Even if your child is a super rider, buying them a bigger bike when only result in them not being able to reach the pedals.

Safety Features

The best big wheels typically are not far off the ground, providing an easy and safe trike for your child. The low center of gravity helps prevent any tipping. However, given enough force, your child may topple over, which is why it’s important to provide your child with big wheels suitable for their age and size.

Despite not being far off the ground, it’s important for your child to wear a helmet. If you’re in the market for a new helmet for your toddler, we have you covered.

FAQs About Big Wheels

How safe are big wheels?

When it comes to bikes, big wheels are very safe for kids. They usually are lower to the ground, allowing your child to easily get on and off the trike. It also means their balance doesn’t have to be perfect in order to ride it. Balance is something little ones haven’t quite mastered yet.

To keep your child safe on big wheels, make sure the size is appropriate for them. A small child on a big bike can easily fall off and a larger child on a small bike can throw off their balance causing an accident.

With that being said, it’s still important for your child to wear a helmet anytime they are riding one of the best big wheels for kids.

How do you pick the right size big wheels?

You always want to make sure your child has no problem reaching the pedals. If they are straining to reach, then they aren’t quite tall enough. You also don’t want your child to have to bend their knees so much, just in order to fit on the bike. Not only will be it uncomfortable for your child, but it will also make steering difficult.

Keep in mind what the maximum weight capacity is on the bike. Even if they fit the height requirements, you shouldn’t go over the recommended max weight. Doing so could cause the bike to move too fast and your child may have a hard time controlling it.

Do big wheels come with brakes?

There are some big wheels that do come with brakes, but not all. For the most part, the big wheels geared towards the younger kids, don’t have any brakes. On some of the best big wheels, your child brakes by simply pushing the pedals backward.

It’s important to remind your child not to go down any hills while riding their big wheels. Going downhill without brakes can cause serious injury. In addition, since big wheels do not have chains, it allows the child to pedal forwards and backward.

Why are big wheels good for kids?

The best big wheels provide a great opportunity for kids to work on their gross motor skills. Gross motor skills help develop a child’s larger muscles in their legs and arms.

Gross motor skills also relate to a child’s balance and strength. Encouraging a child at a young age to get out and play, whether it be running, walking, or riding a big wheels, helps them begin to develop these important skills.

In addition, they are a great stepping stone to learning how to ride a bike. With big wheels, they can learn how to operate pedals, without the concern of tipping over. It can help build their confidence, knowing they’ve had practice on their big wheels.

What’s the best age for big wheels?

Typically, children as young as three can start using a big wheels trike. Some of the best big wheels have adjustable seats meaning you’ll get more use out of the trike as your child grows. It’s always a plus when something you buy for your child that can last for a few years.

I, personally, feel that big wheels are best for children 3-5. Even if a trike is labeled for a two-year-old, there’s a chance their feet don’t reach the pedals. Luckily, with some of those, your child can still use their feet to push around. Even just doing that, is still helping with their balance.

When do kids stop using big wheels?

Some of the best big wheels allow the older kids to join in on the fun. However, children typically grow out of big wheels around 5-7, when they are starting to learn how to ride a real bike. By using big wheels, they are able to make themselves familiar with how pedals work.

As you saw in the list, the big kids don’t get left out when it comes to big wheels. With that being said, the big wheels targeted towards teenagers should not be used by little ones. Small children do not have the balance or coordination to use the big wheels that spin and do various tricks.
