The Graco DuetSoothe Swing and Rocker is our number one choice because of its versatility and ability to accommodate babies up to 30 lbs.  In terms of swings for bigger babies, 30 lbs is a great weight limit.

When used as a swing, you can enjoy 6 different swinging speeds and 2 different recline positions to find the best way to keep your baby happy and comfortable.  You have the ability to choose whether your baby swings side-to-side or front-to-back which is a great feature.

Once you decide which way your baby prefers to swing, you can also add in 2 different vibration speeds to help soothe your baby in one more way.  In addition to the various motions and vibrations, you also have 10 different melodies and 5 soothing sounds to choose from.

And if that wasn’t enough, you will also find 3 plush animals attached to a mobile that can keep your baby visually stimulated as they spend time swinging.  It will gently rotate to keep your baby engaged without being overstimulated.

The swing has the option to be plugged in, or run off of battery power.  You don’t have to feel tied to an outlet, but you have a great backup if the batteries need to be replaced.

A huge benefit to the Graco DuetSoothe Swing and Rocker is that you can detach the swing seat, and carry it with you as a portable rocker seat.  While the swing itself will take up floor space, having the benefit of bringing a rocker with you from room to room means you can cut down on one additional piece of equipment, and have the benefit of keeping your baby with you in a safe place.

Baby Swings For Big Babies Buying Criteria

Safety

As your baby grows and moves around, you want to know that they are secure in their swing seat.  Particularly when looking for a baby swing for big babies, we recommend looking for seats that have at least a 3 point harness. A 5 point harness is even better. Rest assured that they will be kept safely in their seat and will be prevented from being able to roll over, sit up, or tip over their chair.

Durability

Most baby swings can be used for infants up to 6 months, so they will get months of use.  If you plan on having multiple children or passing your swing on to a family member, then durability is an important feature.  For the amount of use your swing will potentially get, you want to make sure you have a quality piece of equipment that will stand the use and weight of a big baby.

Amount of Space They Take Up

One factor, as with most baby gear, is that swings can take up valuable floor space, so we recommend a multipurpose option that can grow with your baby as they age.  Whether used for rocking a baby down for naps, playtime, or a safe place to relax while you cook dinner, a good swing can serve you well.

You can look for smaller, portable options, or more versatile choices that allow you to move them from room to room in your house.  If you have a larger swing that is stationary to one space, an option that has various movements and speeds will give you more ways to keep your baby entertained and happy while remaining in the same room.

Extra Features

One of the top additional features to look for are built-in soothing sounds, like white noise, or soft music options.  Gentle background noise can be helpful for keeping your baby calm and happy while in a swing.  You may also look for mobiles or swinging toys to keep your baby visually engaged while relaxing.

FAQs About Baby Swings For Big Babies

Are Baby Swings a Good Sleep Option?

Swings are a great way to help soothe and rock your baby to sleep, especially when you’re tired arms need a rest.

However, we recommend that if your baby falls asleep you either directly monitor them, or remove them to finish the duration of their nap on a safe sleep surface. As recommended by the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP), “Infants should be placed on a firm sleep surface (eg, mattress in a safety-approved crib) covered by a fitted sheet with no other bedding or soft objects to reduce the risk of SIDS and suffocation.”

What is the Weight Limit on a Baby Swing?

Typical baby swings have a weight limit of 20-25lbs.  When looking for an option for a bigger baby we searched for options that surpassed this weight capacity.

Most swings that will accommodate larger weight limits will also come with a 5 point harness.  You want to be sure that a bigger baby cannot potentially tip or offset the swing by shifting their weight.

Are There Baby Swings for Older Babies?

Most baby swings are geared for newborns to 6 months.  Once babies are able to turn over and sit up on their own, their safety can be compromised in a typical soothing swing.  If you’re looking for an indoor/outdoor swing option for engagement and fun, we recommend Little Tikes 2-in-1 Snug ‘n Secure Swing for playtime.

Should Baby Swing Seats Recline?

It’s not necessary that a seat should recline, but it’s a great added feature.  As your baby grows and develops, they will likely want to sit up and see what is happening around them. Being able to adjust the incline can be a helpful feature.  As your baby is relaxing, being able to decline the seat if they fall asleep can be helpful.

As a reminder, unless you are directly monitoring your baby, we suggest removing them from the swing when they fall asleep to finish their nap on a safe sleep surface.
