Enfamil Enspire Formula – A Real Mom Review
Key Benefits of Enfamil Enspire
Enfamil Enspire includes two important ingredients found in breastmilk that you cannot find in other baby formulas. With a dynamic duo of lactoferrin and MFGM, your baby gets a formula that is closer to breastmilk than any other option available on the market.
Take a look at these key ingredients and find out why this is a great option for fostering cognitive development and supporting a healthy immune system.
The key benefit to Enfamil Enspire is it’s the closest Enfamil formula to breastmilk. An ingredient called lactoferrin makes this formula stand out from the crowd of other formulas.
Lactoferrin is a protein found in human and cow milk, and it helps to fight infection.
Most of the lactoferrin is found in babies’ first milk (or colostrum), and it functions in the body by binding and transporting iron to where it needs to go. Moreover, the ingredient has antioxidants and even anti-inflammatory benefits, which is often the cause of most illnesses and health issues.
To make lactoferrin even more enticing, it can fight not only infection but also ulcers, osteoporosis, acne, and hepatitis C. It can also help to regulate iron, prevent aging, and activate the immune system while also promoting healthy intestinal bacteria.
Another key component of this formula is the MFGM or milk fat globule membrane, and it’s found in every drop of breast milk.
MFGM is a fat that helps with baby’s cognitive development. Babies need healthy fat to grow their brains along with the rest of their bodies. Furthermore, it’s a naturally occurring membrane that wraps around the fat in breastmilk as a triglyceride and even serves as a probiotic to help with gut health too.
The powerful fatty ingredient not only helps with brain growth but can decrease painful ear infections, too, and can improve intestinal tract development and respiratory health. This means it helps to improve your baby’s brain and gut health!
Mind you, unlike breast milk, the MFGM found in Enspire comes from cows instead of humans.
Ingredients in Enfamil Enspire
You know the two most awe-inspiring ingredients of Enfamil Enspire, but the benefits don’t stop there. Let’s take a closer look at all of the ingredients.
Five fluid ounces of Enspire holds 5.3 grams of fat. Breastmilk is roughly 50 percent fat, making it ultra-creamy. To keep up with breastmilk, Enspire also offers very similar amounts of fat but in a different form. Mostly, the baby formula provides fats in the form of oils.
Enspire uses a mix of four oils (which is very similar to other best baby formulas), including palm olein, coconut, soy, and high oleic sunflower oils. Palm is the primary fat because it’s a fatty acid similar to breast milk fat. Controversy surrounds palm olein oil because a baby doesn’t absorb the palm oil as readily as they do breastmilk.
As a matter of fact, palm oil can cause intestinal issues for babies by forming insoluble calcium soaps in the intestines. This simply means the unabsorbed oils bind with calcium and prevent the body from absorbing the calcium, which everyone needs for healthy bones, among other things. However, while they can cause some digestive issues, the soaps are not dangerous to your baby, just bothersome in the form of harder stool or constipation.
Next is coconut oil, which is a good source of medium-chain triglycerides that are easily digested. We would love to see coconut oil as the main source of fat on the list.
Soy is another type of fat, and its usually added because it is a cheap fat. The problem is, it can act as a hormone disruptor and act as an allergen. It would be great if all formula companies eliminated soy oil unless a baby has an allergy to milk and need a different option, as most soy oil is also from GMO sources.
Two other types of fat you will find in Enfamil Enspire are ARA and DHA.
The first, ARA, shows up as mortierella alpina oil; DHA shows up as crypthecodinium cohnii oil. Adults try to load up on these two fatty acids by stocking up on fish oils, but babies probably don’t want to drink those, so formula companies add them instead.
Neither of these fatty acids are essential because the human body can create them on their own from other protein sources. However, both of these are readily found in breastmilk, making it a valuable addition. They can also help with brain growth and eye development.
Finally, DHA is a long-chain omega 3 fatty acid with numerous benefits ready to help several body processes. ARA is another fatty acid (omega 6) that helps to play many helpful roles in the body and regulate inflammation, which can improve your baby’s immune system.
Prebiotics and Probiotics
The Enfamil Enspire adds in galactooligosaccharides and polydextrose, both of which are prebiotics. Breastmilk contains mass amounts of prebiotics to help support gut health, and this is the same reason you will find them in baby formula.
In case you don’t know, prebiotics are simply a fiber that doesn’t break and instead ferment in the body to create good bacteria, and the benefits are endless.
Probiotics also help with gut health by providing an army of live bacteria ready to fight bad bacteria. However, Enfamil Enspire does not have probiotics. You can add Enfamil Vitamins Infant Probiotics Dual Probiotics Drops to your babies formula to gain the benefits easily.
If you want a baby formula with probiotics, try out the Gerber Good Start Soothe. It also has prebiotics, too, for added benefits.
Protein is a macronutrient everyone needs to build muscle mass, and babies need muscles too. Moreover, macronutrients like protein provide calories and energy. Most protein in baby formula comes directly from cows and in two sources: whey and casein.
Whey burns fast and provides immediate energy, whereas casein burns slow and provides a longer burning source of protein. Enfamil Enspire uses two types of whey protein, including the MFGM mentioned in detail above. The other is whey protein concentrate.
Whey is the preferred protein for baby formula because it is less likely to cause allergies. However, because it breaks down quicker, it could mean your baby will want to eat more often.
Another point: cows milk is 20 percent whey and 80 percent casein, while breastmilk is 60 percent whey and 40 percent casein. This means your baby will have an easier time digesting the whey since its more similar to breastmilk. As Enfamil Enspire doesn’t use casein, your baby is less likely to have an allergy to the product.
Carbohydrates and Sugars
The most common carbohydrate in breastmilk is lactose, and the same is true for baby formula, but their lactose comes from a cow. Lactose provides the sweetness and calories babies need to thrive.
What’s truly wonderful about Enspire is it’s the only source of carbs come from the lactose. This means your baby isn’t getting any form of corn syrup or unnatural sugars like in many other formulas. Yeah for Enfamil!
One of the reasons other formulas use corn syrup is because they believe babies react to lactose, but that’s not usually the case. More babies are likely to take issue with the protein (whey or casein) than with the lactose, which is the main ingredient in human breastmilk.
Many babies prefer the sweeter formulas, but the sugars can wreak havoc on your baby’s tiny body and lead to problems like obesity and diabetes.
We love Enfamil Enspire because the only carb and sweetener is lactose. Even better, you won’t find maltodextrin either, which can spike blood sugar levels and should never be in baby formula. It also reduces the growth of probiotics among several other issues with this fake sweetener that is often used as a thickener in baby formula.
Lastly, Enspire uses nonfat milk to provide the basis and flavor for the formula. It provides a source of carbs, protein, and nutrients too.
Do note that Enspire is not very sweet and in comparison to formula’s with corn syrup, and if you try to change your baby to Enspire from a corn syrup formula, you will probably meet with resistance.
Vitamins and Minerals
If you look at the back label of any formula, you will see a long list of insane sounding ingredients. But have no fear, these are the vitamins in their scientific word form. With Enspire, your baby will get a healthy dose of all the vitamins and minerals they need.
The vitamin list includes:
- Vitamin A
- Vitamin C
- Vitamin D
- Vitamin E
- Vitamin K
- Vitamins B6 and B12
- Folic acid
- Pantothenic acid
For minerals, you get healthy amounts of:
A quick note, most baby formulas add high amounts of iron (1.8 mg) to prevent anemia. However, this can cause problems as its often the reason for upset stomach and constipation in babies. If you want a formula with less iron for sensitive babies, you may want to look into organic or European formulas.
Otherwise, this is formula ready to provide complete infant nutrition for the first 12 months of a baby’s life.
One potentially problematic ingredient in Enfamil Enspire is soy lecithin. It’s a widely used food additive surrounded by controversy because of the word soy. The ingredient is an excellent emulsifier to help blend the ingredients together.
The ingredient comes with several benefits and several issues. First, it can improve cholesterol, act as choline, boost immunity, aid with stress, improve brain function, and prevent both cancer and osteoporosis. However, it can also usually comes from a GMO source and is linked to hexane, which can cause problems of its own.
Gentleness of Enfamil Enspire
Enfamil Enspire is as close to breastmilk as possible and uses whey instead of casein, making it a more gentle formula.
However, it’s not strictly a gentle formula, as it wasn’t created specifically to ease a baby’s tummy. However, the company does offer Enfamil Enspire Gentlease Formula with all the benefits and fewer tummy issues.
The problem with the Gentlease version of Enspire is it uses corn syrup to replace the lactose making this a much sweeter option and more likely to cause issues. Surprisingly over the course of the day, your baby can get more corn syrup than is found in a can of Coca-Cola! Not only can corn syrup lead to obesity, but it can deform tastebuds and make your baby crave sugar, along with other issues like cavities, diabetes, and ADD.
Otherwise, the Enspire Gentlease does use partially hydrolyzed milk and whey protein to help your baby better digest the formula. The whey proteins in Enspire are not hydrolyzed, which can make it more difficult for sensitive baby tummies to digest the formula.
Common Problems with Enfamil Enspire Formula
The only real issues with Enspire are the smell and the cost of the formula. Also, it can be a problem for babies who are lactose intolerant or those with a milk allergy.
As for expense, it’s the most expensive Enfamil powder formula on the market because it’s the most like breastmilk in their line, and they know many moms will pay the extra cost.
To be honest, it’s the most expensive baby formula powder on the market besides a few versions made for specific allergies. Is it worth it? The cost depends on your budget and your baby’s needs.
While it’s always best to pick the option closest to breastmilk, not everyone can afford this costly option. Most store brands do not offer a less expensive option based on Enfamil Enspire. This means you cannot save money no generic options like you can with other formula options.
Honestly, our only other complaint about the formula is that it’s not organic, a quality that is almost always a sign of high-quality ingredients. Although, the formula is free of both GMOs and artificial growth hormones, improving its benefits and despite the non-organic quality.

FAQs About Enfamil Enspire
How does Enfamil Enspire compare to Similac Pro Advance?
The main difference between Enfamil Enspire and Similac Pro Advance is the ingredient most similar to breastmilk. With Enfamil, the two key ingredients are lactoferrin and MFGM. In Similac Pro Advance, the key ingredient is a probiotic called 2′-FL HMO that is found in abundance in breastmilk.
Similac Pro Advance also has a few other ingredients not found in Enspire. First, the formula has lutein, which helps with brain and eye development.
Second, Pro Advance does not contain palm olein oil, which is a huge benefit. Instead, they use high oleic safflower oil, and this is a great option as it doesn’t limit calcium absorption while still offering a safe fatty oil but could potentially be linked to heart disease.
As for similarities, both formulas offer DHA, prebiotics, and very similar amounts of vitamins. Also, both have similar ingredients for carbs and fats using lactose and whey protein concentrate.
Similac does not offer the fatty acid ARA, but again, this isn’t necessary, as the human body can create this from other acids. They do offer a significantly higher dose of inositol, although which is great for mood and other functions. However, Similac’s formula has higher sodium levels too.
Both are wonderful options with a different list of pros and cons. We prefer Enfamil Enspire because of key ingredients although, the Similac Pro Advance is significantly more affordable.

Should I use purified water to make this formula?
Tap water is fine, depending on your local water source. You may want to consider checking your local water reports before using in your baby’s formula. Bottled water is a fabulous option to use as it’s purified. However, make sure to use bottled water without added fluoride as this ingredient in high amounts can cause teeth and other issues.
Otherwise, check with your doctor to see if you need to boil the water before giving it to your baby as they know your child’s specifics.
How do I prepare a bottle of Enfamil Enspire?
To prepare a bottle of formula, you need to wash your hands. After, figure out how much you want to prepare. Make sure to mix the right amount of water for the formula and pour both into the bottle.
Now, put the cap back on the bottle and shake it well. For Enspire, you usually want one scoop of unpacked, level powder for every two ounces. If you want to heat the water, do not use the microwave because it can cause hot spots.
Do not change the amounts of water or powder without talking to your pediatrician.
You might wonder if Enspire is a high-quality product ready to improve your baby’s life.
Our answer is yes, this is a high-quality product ready to provide necessary nutrients to your baby with very few questionable ingredients. Moreover, the formula is non-GMO and free of artificial growth hormones making it an even better product and at the top of our list of baby formulas.
It’s the closest formula to breastmilk, and that is the goal for a good formula. Also, the formula offers ingredients you cannot get in other formulas such as lactoferrin and MFGM, along with prebiotics to improve gut health.
Now, if only Enfamil could make this formula organic and add in some probiotics, it might just be the next best thing to breastmilk.
