Spit-up No More or Mixing Chore?

Enfamil A.R. Baby Formula is a special formula for babies who have issues spitting up or have common reflux. It is thickened with rice cereal so you don’t have to add anything. But will it help your baby? Or will it just be an exercise in futility trying to mix it properly and get it to flow through the bottle?

Key Features of Enfamil A.R.

#1 Seller: Enfamil A.R. Baby Formula is the number one best seller for all infants, under 12 months of age, with spit up or common reflux. This formula meets all of the reflux reduction guidelines from the American Academy of Pediatrics. It is also generally recommended by pediatricians to help reduce spit up.  This can be a huge life saver for all parents.

While experts generally believe that spit up is common in infants and usually harmless it can reduce the amount of food your baby gets making it harder for them to gain and sustain weight.  It can also make feeding take longer and can be a huge mess to deal with.

Reduces Spit Up By 50%: Enfamil A.R. Baby Formula claims to reduce spit-up by 50 percent. This claim is based on a double-blind study that they performed on infants who regularly spit up more than 5 times a day. They found that approximately 50 percent of these babies spit up less on Enfamil A.R formula than they did before the study began. This formula is considered good for spit-up because it is thickened with rice cereal.

Reduce Reflux

Enfamil A.R. Baby Formula adds the thickening agent for you so all you have to do is mix your bottle or use one of their ready-made formula bottles. Ideally, this combination will reduce the discomfort or severity of your baby’s reflux helping them feel better.

It contains all of the important nutrients like iron, calcium, folic acid and much more. Cow milk formula is one of the most common types of formula and generally works for babies unless they are allergic to it according to the Mayo Clinic

Probiotics: Enfamil A.R. Baby Formula contains a mix of two important probiotics that aid in the digestion process of your baby. Experts say that probiotics are healthy organisms that live in your body and aid in digestion. These little guys can offer up a lot of health benefits when consumed in moderation.

Ready Made or Powder: Another nifty feature in Enfamil A.R. Baby Formula is that you can buy this formula in small premade bottles for easy access or in powdered format. The Ready Made option is obviously more expensive however it is quite a time saver in the middle of the night or to carry around in your diaper bag to easily access on the go.

Price: Because this formula is made for babies with special feeding needs, it can be pretty pricey at your local grocery store. Specialty formulas always are. The good news is that you can buy this formula on Amazon for much, much less money! My recommendation is that you buy the larger supply of Enfamil A.R. so that you don’t have to worry about running out. When you buy it this way, you can use the amazing Subscribe and Save feature, too. I’m telling you, you’ll be saving oodles of money. Click the picture below to see the biggest savings!

Enfamil A.R. Preparation: A Video How-To

Cautions: What to Watch for With This Formula

Difficult to Mix: Because Enfamil A.R. Baby Formula is created to be thicker to help with spit up and common reflux sometimes it may be more difficult to mix into water. Most formula dissolves pretty easily in water with minimal shaking and stirring but because this formula is fortified with rice cereal and is designed to be thicker it may require some additional tricks to get it to mix smoothly and not have lumps. You can always try mixing the bottle as you add water, warming the water before mixing it into the formula, or simply shaking the bottle for longer to ensure it is properly mixed.

Flow Issues: It stands to reason that the thicker a formula is the more issues you are going to have feeding it through those tiny nipple holes. Your first thought may be that you should just make the holes bigger or buy a different nipple, this might work or you may just end up buying a whole bunch of new nipples while having the same problem.

If you aren’t able to get the thick formula to mix well with water you may have clumpy formula which may plug up the nipple hole and cause problems too.

Ready Made and Powder Identical?: One of the nice features of the Enfamil A.R. Baby Formula is that you can choose to buy this formula pre-prepared or make the powder into a bottle yourself. However some parents have noticed that their baby enjoys one and refuses the other even though they are supposed to be identical.

Expiration Date: As with any other perishable product the expiration date is important. Unfortunately when you buy a product online, you have no way of knowing how long it will last. So it’s possible you may buy in bulk to stock up, only to discover that it expires in just a few short months rendering your year long supply useless. You should also make sure you always check that your formula isn’t expired before feeding it to your infant.

Gassy Baby: Enfamil A.R. Baby Formula has also be known to cause gas in babies. Any formula could cause gas in your baby but it’s possible this formula may cause additional gas because of all the extra mixing that is required to get it smooth.

Extra air could be trapped inside during the mixing process. This could be potentially avoided by using the ready made Enfamil A.R. formula.

Damaged Container: If you purchase Enfamil A.R. Baby Formula online you may be surprised to find that the box arrives damaged. In addition to a damaged box being disconcerting it’s also possible that the formula container could have been damaged causing air or moisture to contaminate the formula.  This would make the formula unsafe to give to your baby, and would have been a complete waste of money and time.

FAQ’s About Enfamil A.R. Baby Formula

Does Enfamil AR help with spit up?

Yes, Enfamil AR is a formula with added rice cereal, a solution that many parents over the years have found to be helpful. The formula has been found to reduce spit up in most babies who spit up several times a day.

Does Enfamil AR cause gas?

Some parents do say that Enfamil AR also seems to increase gas (perhaps because of an increased number of air bubbles introduced by the more vigorous mixing required for the thicker mixture).  ExperiencedMommy recommends the premixed version of the formula if gas seems to be a problem for your baby.

Is Enfamil AR a good formula?

Yes, unless your baby is allergic to milk products. Enfamil is a modified milk formula similar to breast milk. It is nutrient-rich and also contains probiotics to aid digestion. It’s a little thicker than standard formula, so you will need to mix carefully (if using powder). Enfamil AR is also available in premixed (liquid) form.

Does adding rice to formula help with reflux?

Yes, and some parents do choose to mix in their own rice cereal. Others find it more convenient to use the formula with rice cereal already mixed in.

What is the difference between Enfamil Gentlease and Enfamil AR?

Enfamil Gentlease is for gassy or fussy babies, while Enfamil AR is for babies with reflux (spitting up).

What formula is best for reflux?

It depends on the baby, but you might ask your doctor. A few of the best are listed below:

  • Enfamil AR
  • Similac Spit up
  • Enfamil Nutramigen with Enflora LGG
  • Enfamil Premium Gentlease Milk-Based
  • Gerber Good Start Gentle Non-GMO
  • Similac Sensitive Non-GMO
  • Parent’s Choice Gentle
  • Enfamil Alimentum
  • Enfamil Pregestimil
  • Enfamil Nutramigen

My Overall Recommendation

This is a safe, tested and respected formula. Most moms end up having to test different formulas to the find the right one for their situation and child.

I definitely wouldn’t opt for this formula unless the baby has real issues with spit up or reflux because it is harder to use than regular formula.

The issues with this formula are things that you could encounter with any formula or even in trying to mix rice cereal in yourself. They aren’t huge deal breakers in my opinion. Overall this product has good reviews and is well liked by most parents who have tried it.
