Buying Criteria – Trampolines for Kids

Safety

Trampolines offer a fun way to exercise, but they are notorious for causing injuries.  Any trampoline has the potential to cause harm- use caution every single time your children get on the trampoline.

Always follow basic safety guidelines before using a trampoline.

  • Never allow little children and bigger children on the trampoline at the same time.
  • Make sure not to allow more than the recommended weight on the trampoline at one time.
  • If at all possible, reduce the number of people on the trampoline to the smallest amount possible and ensure tricks or jumps do not cause children to jump higher than the enclosure net height.
  • Never allow a child under the age of five on a trampoline without adult supervision, as they are more likely than other age brackets to get spinal and other injuries. If necessary, remove the ladder when not in use to keep children away from the trampoline.
  • Do not use a wet trampoline for any reason to avoid slipping injuries.

Even children who are on the trampoline and not jumping can get injured if other children are jumping. Even people outside the trampoline can get injured if a jumper falls off, which is why every option on this list includes an enclosure. Keep an extra eye on inventive kids who tend to find trouble easily.

Finally, make sure to protect your trampoline against the wind. If your area has a lot of wind, you should invest in wind stakes to prevent the trampoline from escaping your yard and causing damages. When I lived in Illinois, a friend of mine didn’t have a trampoline, but a neighbor did. During a storm, the trampoline blew into my friend’s yard and almost broke her fence, roof, and her son, who was trying to get toys inside!

Size

Trampolines come in a variety of sizes, from 36 inches around and small enough for even a tiny house all the way up to giant room-sized trampolines big enough to host a party on. Which size you pick depends entirely on your budget and on the amount of space you have to dedicate to a trampoline.

Remember that the size given in feet (e.g. 14 foot) is the distance from one edge of the trampoline to the other, NOT the height! Those with smaller postage-stamp-sized backyards will definitely want a smaller 8-foot to 12-foot trampoline. If you have space and want a massive trampoline, there are plenty of options available.

First and foremost, you need to measure before buying. Always check the final footprint size before installing to not end up with a trampoline that’s too big for your designated space. Another thing to consider is the impact a trampoline will have on your yard, which we will talk about now.

Location

Trampolines inside your home do not cause a lot of problems as they are smaller and easier to move. You need to worry about space, though, as you don’t want kids to jump too high and knock their heads into the ceiling.

Kids Trampoline 38-Inch Folding Trampoline with Safety Padded Cover for Play Mini Rebounder

Once you go outside, you need to consider how a trampoline will affect your yard.

First, trampolines cover up a lot of space, and it’s usually grass. When grass doesn’t get sunlight, it dies and disappears, which means if you ever take the trampoline out, you will have to reseed and grow that patch of land. If you don’t want to cause inconsistencies or damage to your yard, you may want to consider a smaller trampoline.

Furthermore, you need to consider if the location is flat enough to safely put a trampoline or you may have to level the yard or put in a flat structure for the trampoline. This would increase the cost and include quite a bit of work, too, so keep this in mind if your yard isn’t perfectly flat.

People

Remember, it’s always safest to keep as few people on a trampoline as possible. However, even two people could use a significant amount of space when jumping.

An issue with too much space, though, is kids may inadvertently become less mindful of gymnastics, and with extra space, they could end up injuring themselves.

If you do need space for more jumpers, then you need to go bigger. Otherwise, you will need to limit the number of people on the trampoline. You should always restrict how many people are on a trampoline anyways as a safety precaution. You also need to consider who will be using the trampoline.

If the trampoline is for smaller kids, you may only need a smaller trampoline. If you have a large group of teenagers, you may need a larger trampoline. Consider the age and amount of people before purchasing so you do not have any regrets later on with your purchase.

Exercise

Not only do trampolines provide a fun way to work out, but they can help to improve children’s sense of space. Also, they provide a full-body workout and can even improve the lymphatic system thanks to the up and down motion. There’s more, too, as trampolines can improve stress and improve gross and fine motor skills too.

Do make sure children are careful if trying out gymnastic moves, as these can still be dangerous even if they do improve their gymnastic skills. You may want to consider talking to your child’s gymnastics instructor before making a purchase for your home, as working out in the gym may be a better option.

Either way, trampolines definitely offer a valuable source of exercise with benefits for other parts of the body too.

FAQs – Trampolines for Kids

How many people can be on the trampoline at once?

It’s always best to have one child on a trampoline at one time.

The problem is, most kids want to jump with their friends. Try to keep the number of people on the trampoline as small as possible and always monitor children under the age of 45 years old. Yes, you should watch your husband and wife as well because trampolines always seem to make people feel invincible.

At what age can my kids use the trampoline alone?

Honestly, you should never let your child use the trampoline alone. Thousands of accidents a year happen on a trampoline even with the most mature and well-behaved children. Even if you can trust them, injury can happen.

It’s best to keep someone nearby in case someone is hurt so that the injured person can get medical assistance faster if necessary. Never skimp on safety when it comes to a trampoline. Make sure to sit down with everyone who may get on the unit and discuss the importance of safety before they are allowed to get on and check with parents before children get on it too.

How do I keep a trampoline on the ground?

The best trampolines provide wind stakes with your purchase. Wind can blow even the best trampolines around, even with wind stakes, as they can pull out of the ground with enough force.

If your favorite choice does not include wind stakes, you can get an anchor set  instead.

Finally, you always have the option to purchase large sandbags or rock bags to lay on top of the legs and provide more strength to your trampoline. You could even assemble the legs through the holes of cement blocks, as my genius friend did!

Can an autistic child use a trampoline?

Some children with autism find trampolines overwhelming and scary. However, a large portion of children find trampolines fun and exciting.

First, you should take your child to a trampoline park or to a friend’s trampoline before purchasing to find out how your autistic child responds.

If your child does will with a trampoline, then it could be a great way to improve gross and fine motor skills and perceptual skills too. Trampolines can also calm their nervous system and improve responses in alertness. A trampoline can act as a powerful stress reducer.
