Best Remote Control Cars for 3, 4, 5, and 6-Year-Olds

by Sarah Stockett |

At our house, remote control cars are a prized possession. With two boys, we have (and have had) many remote control cars. Honestly, there are lots of good options on the market right now. However, if I had to pick one that was the very best remote control car for 3-6-year-olds, I would pick the Fisher-Price My Easy RC Vehicle. With its durable construction and parent-controlled speeds, this remote control car should last through the destructive times and in to the more controlled racing times.

This car is both my overall pick and the car that I would choose for a 4-year-old. Read below to find out more about the best remote control cars for 3, 4, 5, and 6-year-olds.

Best Remote Control Car for a 3-Year-Old

Best Choice Products 2-Pack Firetruck and Police Car

Out of all the remote control cars that are suitable for 3-year-olds, I picked Best Choice Products 2-Pack Firetruck and Police Car as the best. I love that two cars come in the pack and that they’re on different frequencies so you can race.

This best remote control car is actually a double! You get both a remote control firetruck and a police car in this set. They also come with interchangeable figures.

Because both vehicles come together in the set, the manufacturer has set different frequencies on each vehicle. This means that you should be able to race them against each other without the remotes controlling both cars. (Sometimes, when you buy remote control cars, they can be set to the same frequency. This makes it impossible to race since one remote will control both cars.)

The two button remotes make it easy for your 3-year-old to drive the car. Press one button to go forward and the other button to turn in a circle.

Also, the vehicles make music when you push the buttons.

Technical Information

  • Product Dimensions:  12 x 4.8 x 7 inches
  • Manufacturer Recommended Age:  3+ years
  • Batteries Needed:  5 AAs per unit (10 AAs total)
  • Are Batteries Provided?:  No

Possible Issues

  • The vehicles make music when you push the buttons. This could possibly be annoying.
  • As with all things, sometimes the vehicles show up with issues. However, from the reviews I read, it sounds like the company was very good with customer service to get the issue resolved quickly.

The Honorable Mention:  Disney Mickey and the Roadster Racers R/C Car

In my house, we have lots of love for Mickey Mouse, so it was really tempting to choose the Disney Mickey and the Roadster Racers R/C Car. Honestly, the idea of having Mickey’s car transform from a regular car into his Roadster Racer is really what sold me. Sure it’s a basic remote control car, but the idea sounds so fun! Plus, it makes sounds and Mickey has 3 sayings.

A big reason why this didn’t make it to the #1 spot is because some of the pieces may fall off after big crashes. Several people reported that pieces of their car fell off after it crashed against a wall. If you have a new driver (like a 3-year-old might be), this car might be a bad choice. However, if you had a good driver who loved Mickey, this would be excellent!

Best Remote Control Car for a 4-Year-Old

Fisher-Price My Easy RC Vehicle

The Fisher-Price My Easy RC Vehicle is the best remote control car for a 4-year-old because of its sturdy construction, simple directions, and parent-controlled speed settings.

Driving a remote control car doesn’t get much easier than this. First of all, there are two parent-controlled speed settings. This allows you to have the car operate at a slower speed while your child is learning to drive their car. Then, you can raise it up to the faster speed when your child is ready.

The remote has four buttons. These make the car go forward, backward, to the right, and to the left. With the way these buttons are set up, you only have to choose the right or left button for your car to move forward and turn. This is very helpful since your little one may not yet have the dexterity to press the forward button and a turning button at the same time.

Also, the auto shut-off helps conserve battery life. This is important because your little one may not always remember to turn off the toy. The last thing you want is for the batteries to be drained whenever your child wants to play again.

Technical Information

  • Product Dimensions:  13 x 6.5 x 8 inches
  • Manufacturer Recommended Age:  36 months-6 years
  • Batteries Needed:  6 AAs
  • Are Batteries Provided?:  No

Possible Issues

  • Of the cars listed in this article, this one is the priciest. In this case, it is double (or more) than the other remote control cars on this best list.
  • As with all remote control cars, there are sometimes defective ones. If you have received a defective car or remote, return it immediately.

Best Remote Control Car for a 5-Year-Old

Sharper Image Toy Radio Control 2-in-1 Vehicle Flip Stunt Rally Car – Red

Even though the manufacturer recommends your child be 6 or older to play with this remote control car, I think the Sharper Image Toy Radio Control 2-in-1 Vehicle Flip Stunt Rally Car – Red is perfect for a 5-year-old. My son was 4 or 5 when he got his, and we’re still playing with it today!

One half of this remote control car is red, and the other half is white. Both halves have headlights that light up. The reason why I love this car is because it flips over whenever it hits something. This means that even terrible drivers can operate this car and not tear it up.

The remote control is has two levers. One drives the car forward and backward. The other turns the car clockwise and counter-clockwise.

With this car, there is only one speed–fast! It’s fun to watch this speedy car zip around the room.

Another benefit of this car is that it’s relatively inexpensive. So many remote control cars are relatively expensive. If your child accidentally breaks it on the first run, which is a possibility, it can be really frustrating. When you buy an inexpensive car, it’s not such a big deal if something breaks.

That being said, we’ve had ours for a couple of years now and nothing has broken. My older son has always been a good driver and taken good care of the car, but my younger one is a relatively horrible driver and more reckless with its care. There are many crashes and he pulls the tires off, but nothing has ever broken and everything goes back on just as if it never came off.

Technical Information

  • Product Dimensions:  9.6 x 7.8 x 6 inches
  • Manufacturer Recommended Age:  6 years and up
  • Batteries Needed:  4 AAAs, 1 9v
  • Are Batteries Provided?:  No

Possible Issues

  • There seems to be inconsistency with quality. Some people even report their car breaking within the first day or showing up broken.
  • The controls are a little stiff at first, which can be a real challenge to driving your car.

Best Remote Control Car for a 6-Year-Old

Maeffort Remote Control Car

Simply put, the Maeffort Remote Control Car blows my mind.

Not only does this remote control car race across the floor, it climbs the walls and does stunts. The car uses air suction technology to climb the walls and move quickly. Because of its 360° Stunt Rotation capabilities, you can race the car across the wall and even perform stunts while it’s up there!

The infrared remote control has two joy sticks–one for moving forward and backward, the other for driving clockwise and counter-clockwise. It also has 3 frequency settings so you can have the best reception and ensure that your fun is uninterrupted.

There are flashing red and blue LED lights. This is particularly neat looking at night.

Although the car body is lightweight, it’s also strong. This means that your car is less likely to get damaged if it accidentally falls off a wall.

Technical Information

  • Product Dimensions:  6.1 x 3.3 x 1.6 inches
  • Manufacturer Recommended Age:  5 years and up
  • Batteries Needed:  6 AAs
  • Are Batteries Provided?:  Not the AAs. A rechargeable 3.7V 120MAH battery is provided for the car, and the AAs are for its remote.

Possible Issues

  • There’s always the chance that you may get a defective product. Truthfully though, so few people have had issues with this car that I struggle to find complaints aside from the occasional person who has gotten a defective car right out of the box.

My Recommendation

If you’re looking for the best remote control car overall for a 3-6-year-old, get the Fisher-Price My Easy RC Vehicle. I like this remote control car better than the rest because of its durability, easy-to-operate remote, and parent-controlled speed settings.

Because of these features, the car will be able to grow with your child. As your little one learns to drive, you can reduce the speed to ensure that the car stays safe. Once they know  what they’re doing, crank up the speed and watch them go!
