The 16 Best Potty Training Seats and Chairs

Sometimes it’s best to use a potty training seat, that sits directly on the toilet when potty training your little one because it helps them get comfortable with a full-sized toilet quicker. Yet, some are still afraid of sitting on the toilet or they can’t get on the seat easily. When that’s the case, we recommend using a potty chair that sits on the floor. Below you’ll find our list of the best potty training seats and the best potty training chairs.

Best Potty Training Toilet Seats

When comparing toilet seats, we noticed that the Munchkin Sturdy Potty Seat, Nickelodeon Paw Patrol Soft Potty Seat, and the Disney Minnie Soft Potty Seat include side handles, while the Jool Folding Potty Seat and the BABYBJORN Toilet Trainer do not have side handles.

Munchkin Sturdy Potty Seat

Munchkin® Sturdy™ Potty Training Seat, Green

Popularity

The Munchkin Sturdy Potty Seat is a plastic seat shaped to help children sit in place when going potty. It comes in green (pictured) as well as grey and is 13.5 x 15 x 3.4 inches in size.

Our favorite part: An air freshener can pop into the back to help eliminate odors!

This seat has a non-slip edge to it to help the seat from sliding when it’s sitting on the toilet seat. Storing this potty seat upright is made easy with the “feet” that are at the bottom of the seat. It does not come with a hook for hanging on the toilet tank but the hook can be purchased separately.

Unlike some potty seats, this seat has a splash-guard built-in, so no worries about that moving around. To help eliminate odors, there’s a spot on the back of the potty seat where a Arm & Hammer Nursery Freshener can be snapped in.

Believe it or not, some parents have had issues with their child putting this seat on around their neck, so keep that in mind.

Pros

  • Non-slip edge
  • Can stand upright for storing
  • Built-in splash guard
  • Spot to snap-in a freshener
  • Easily portable

Cons

  • Does not come with a hook (can purchase separately)
  • Could get stuck (if a child puts it over their head)

Overall

The Munchkin Sturdy Potty Seat is a conveniently-designed potty seat that can stand upright and help eliminate odors.

BABYBJORN Toilet Trainer

The BABYBJORN Toilet Trainer is made with BPA-free plastic, is ergonomically shaped, and has a built-in splash guard. It is available in white/black (pictured), white/turquoise, and white/grey and is 11.5 x 14 x 3.5 inches in size.

Our favorite part: The adjustable dial on the bottom of the potty seat to ensure a secure fit to the toilet.

To adjust the potty seat, there is a dial underneath the seat to adjust it to fit the toilet perfectly. Parents love this feature and say that it really helps the seat not slip and slide when their child is using it. When the seat is not being used, the potty seat can be hung by its attached ring from a hook (hook not included).

The similar color and shape of the potty seat help children transition to a standard toilet seat. It also may help children feel more comfortable using a public toilet.

Pros

  • Adjustable dial
  • BPA-free plastic
  • Built-in splash guard
  • Ring attached (for hanging)
  • Similar look to a standard toilet

Cons

  •  No handles

Overall

Being able to adjust this potty seat for a perfect fit to the toilet makes the Toilet Trainer a great potty training product.

Angelbliss Baby Potty Training Seat

ANGELBLISS Baby Potty Training Toilet Seat with Soft Cushion Handles, Haute Collection, Double Anti-Slip Design and Splash Guard for Boys and Girls (Blue)

The Angelbliss Baby Potty Training Toilet Seat offers contours and comfort which most babies are accustomed to by now.

Our favorite part: Built-in handles for easy holding.

In addition to side handles, the Angelbliss also includes a contoured cushion seat you can remove to make a regular potty seat more like a real potty. It even locks on the toilet to make sure it doesn’t move around on your toddler! It has a built-in pee guard for little boys too.

The sleek design and unobtrusive color scheme help little kids from the ages of 1 to 7 use the bathroom easier and it installs quickly. It includes a hook for easy storage. It’s both safe and comfortable to encourage potty training.

The PU material makes the seat ultra-comfortable. You may even wonder why this doesn’t exist for adults! It’s safe and environmentally safe too. It’s not a good option for square toilets though. Add in a potty stool so your tot can climb up to the toilet and enjoy!

Pros

  • Contoured and comfortable
  • Top layer is removable
  • Built-in splash guard
  • Side handles
  • Locks on toilet

Cons

  • Not very portable

Overall

If you’re looking for a potty seat that fits really well on the toilet without shifting, the Angelbliss potty seat is a great choice.

Jool Baby Potty Training Seat

Potty Training Seat for Boys And Girls, Fits Round & Oval Toilets, Non-Slip with Splash Guard, Includes Free Storage Hook - Jool Baby

Quality
Popularity

The Jool Baby Potty Training Seat is a lightweight plastic potty seat with a built-in splash guard. It comes in aqua (pictured) and pink and is 15.4 x 11.8 x 3.5 inches in size.

Our favorite part: Minimal design is aesthetically pleasing.

The non-slip material is supposed to keep the potty seat in place but some parents claim it slips and slides often. This could be dependent on the size of the toilet seat it’s being put on because some parents claim it fits very well and does not slip.

When not in use, the potty seat can be hung on the damage-free adhesive toilet hook. Unlike many toilet hooks, this hook does not hang on the toilet tank but is meant to stick on the wall instead. With the potty seat being lightweight and slim, it should be easy to travel with as well.

There are a couple of things we don’t like about this seat. Without handles, children are going to have a harder time situating themselves on the seat and have a higher chance of getting their hands dirty. In addition, the built-in splash guard is said to come up too high creating issues with kids getting on and off the seat easily.

Pros

  • Minimal/simple design
  • Lifetime manufacturer warranty
  • Similar look to a standard toilet

Cons

  • Non-slip may not work well
  • Splash-guard gets in the way
  • No handles
  • No toilet tank hook

Overall

The minimal design is nice for aesthetics but the Jool Baby Potty Training Seat doesn’t seem practical enough for young children.

Nickelodeon Paw Patrol “Calling All Pups” Soft Potty Seat

The Nickelodeon Paw Patrol “Calling All Pups” Soft Potty Seat has a soft cushion seat with handles. It is available in a variety of designs including Blaze and the Monster Machines, Blue, Mickey Mouse, Minnie Mouse, Winnie the Pooh, Disney Princesses, Bubble Guppies, Dora the Explorer, Jake, Peppa Pig, and other Paw Patrol designs. It is 11.8 x 2.5 x 13.2 inches in size.

Our favorite part: Tons of Nickelodeon characters to choose from + made in the USA!

Some parents have experienced urine getting caught between the cushion and the plastic seat. Fortunately, the soft cushion seat is removable for easy cleaning. A splash-guard is included and is also removable. A potty hook (for the toilet tank) is not included but this potty seat does have a space for it.

This potty seat tends to shift when a child is trying to get on and off of it. Some parents are not bothered by this and some think it makes potty training extra difficult for their little one.

Pros

  • Made in the USA
  • Soft and removable cushion
  • Handles
  • Easily portable
  • Splash-guard
  • Place to hang on toilet hook

Cons

  • Toilet hook not included
  • Can shift
  • Urine can get caught between the cushion and seat plastic

Overall

We love that the Nickelodeon potty seat comes in a variety of character designs and is made in the USA.

The First Years Disney Soft Potty Seat

The First Years Disney Soft Potty Seat has a soft cushion seat with plastic handles on the side for support. This is available in a Mickey Mouse design and a Madagascar design as well. It is 12.5 x 2.8 x 13.5 inches in size.

Our favorite part: Children will love these familiar cartoon characters.

These potty seats include popular character artwork on the seats and handles which will motivate children to use the potty and make potty training fun. A splash-guard is included that can be used for boys. The cushion can be easily removed for extra cleaning.

Parents dislike how much this potty seat slides on the toilet. The seat is said to shift easily when a child is trying to sit on it or get off of it. Unfortunately, this seat is not created to hang on a hook from the toilet tank when it’s not in use.

Pros

  • Familiar Disney character favorites
  • Soft and removable cushion
  • Handles
  • Splash-guard
  • Easily portable

Cons

  • Seat shifts easily
  • No place to hang on a toilet tank when not in use

Overall

A shifting potty seat can make potty training harder than it needs to be but beyond that, the colorful Disney designs of this potty seat are exciting and motivating.

Cozy Greens Potty Seat

The Cozy Greens Potty Seat features ComfySeat material and a GrippySafe Anti-Slip Ring to prevent the seat from shifting. It is available in green (pictured) and beige and is 14.5 x 11.6 x 2.5 inches in size.

Our favorite part: Giving back to charity and including a potty training chart with stickers.

A built-in splash guard is also part of this potty seat. It sits lower than most potty seats to help children get on and off the seat without harm but some parents complain the guard is too low for boys, which creates messes.

When not in use, the potty seat has a ring that it can hang from; a suction cup and hook screw are included for hanging. Cozy Greens donates a portion of every purchase to charity.

To help encourage potty training success, there is a potty training chart with stickers that is included with the seat. If there are any issues with the potty seat, Cozy Greens offers a lifetime factory warranty.

Pros

  • Lifetime factory warranty
  • Potty training chart with stickers
  • Ergonomic shape
  • Built-in splash guard
  • Ring for hanging (plus suction cup and hook screw)
  • Portion of purchase goes to charity

Cons

  • Splash guard too low for boys
  • No handles

Overall

The Cozy Greens Potty Seat gives back to charity and helps motivate children with a fun potty training chart and stickers.

Popularity

The Mangohood Potty Training Toilet Seat is a padded toilet seat with an adjustable ladder for ages 1-8 years old. It comes in blue/green (pictured), blue/purple, and pink/white. Some versions include an updated cushion seat. It is 26.1 x 14.7 x 3.9 inches in size.

Our favorite part: The adjustable footrest for your growing child.

This potty seat fits most toilet shapes (other than square) and fits standard height toilets (13″ to 16.5″ from floor to seat). The ladder helps children climb up in a safe way helping them to use the potty independently. As the child grows, the ladder footrest can be adjusted between two heights. When not in use, the ladder easily folds up to be put out of the way.

A downfall of the ladder is that it sometimes does not sit level on the floor causing it to not be as sturdy.

Unlike many potty seats, this seat should be placed directly on the toilet bowl for the best fit. Some parents have issues with messes because the splash guard is too short. Fortunately, if there are any issues, Mangohood offers a lifetime warranty on this product.

Pros

  • Lifetime guarantee
  • Ladder with adjustable footrest
  • Soft cushion seat
  • Ladder folds up easily

Cons

  • Ladder could be sturdier
  • Short splash-guard

Overall

To encourage independent potty training, the Mangohood seat is a safe option.

SKYROKU Potty Training Seat with Step Stool Ladder

Toilet Potty Training Seat with Step Stool Ladder,SKYROKU Potty Training Toilet for Kids Boys Girls Toddlers-Comfortable Safe Potty Seat with Anti-Sli (Blue)

The SKYROKU Potty Training Seat is a CPC Certified (applies to children’s product safety rules) potty seat that is available in blue (pictured) and pink. It is 13 x 5 x 14 inches in size.

Our favorite part: The CPC Certification tells us that all safety standards have been met.

A soft removable cushion (held on by Velcro) keeps the seat warmer than a plastic one and is comfortable for the child. When the ladder is not in use, it easily folds up to be put to the side and out of the way. The bottom of the ladder has anti-slip pads so there shouldn’t be any sliding when climbed upon.

The footrest of the ladder is not adjustable but the legs of the ladder can adjust to fit any height toilet. Some parents still have to lift their child up onto the toilet because of the low footrest.

Pros

  • CPC Certified
  • Adjustable ladder height
  • Ladder folds away
  • Removable cushion seat

Cons

  •  Footrest not adjustable

Overall

This potty seat is a safe and comfortable seat but depending on the child’s height, they may still need to be lifted up to sit on top of the seat.

Best Potty Training Chairs

The First Years Training Wheels Racer Potty and the The First Years Baby Shark Potty Seat are both 2-in-1 potty seats, while the Summer Step by Step Potty is actually a 3-in-1 potty chair.

Summer Infant Step by Step Potty

Summer Infant Step by Step Potty, Neutral  – 3-in-1 Potty Training Toilet – Features Contoured Seat, Flushable Wipes Holder and Toilet Tissue Dispenser
Price$$$$

Popularity

For the most realistic potty experience, the Summer Infant Step by Step Potty features a potty chair, lid, and toilet paper holder! There’s even a place to store flushable wipes.

Our favorite part: The toilet paper holder helps your child learn how to wipe too!

Your child can use this potty chair in 3 different ways: as a floor potty, a potty seat on the toilet, or as a stepping stool. The attached toilet paper holder is a genius idea and makes learning to wipe way easier; your child can actually reach the toilet paper without asking for it.

The potty seat is padded and the chair includes a lid, so you can cover the potty when you’re transporting it or storing it.

Pros

  • 3-in-1 potty chair
  • Includes a toilet paper holder and place to store flushable wipes
  • Designed with a lid

Cons

  • Urine may get stuck in grooves (so you have to clean it out a lot)
  • Urine may leak into the base

Overall

This is a handy potty chair for those wanting to give their child a full potty training experience with toilet paper and all.

The First Years Training Wheels Racer Potty System

The First Years Training Wheels Racer Potty Training Toilet - Race Car Training Potty - Includes Detachable Toddler Toilet Seat and Kids Potty - Ages 18 Months and Up
Price$$$
Quality
Popularity

For the race car fan, the Training Wheels Racer Potty System from The First Years will grab his or her attention right away and hopefully encourage them to sit on it more.

Our favorite part: An attractive design makes this chair less “scary” and more likely to be used for potty training.

If you like the idea of a potty chair and a potty seat, this potty system gives you the best of both worlds. As a potty chair, your little one can sit down comfortably and lean back on the backrest. Handles on each side of the seat help with sitting down and standing back up. A splash guard helps keep everything in the potty where it belongs.

Once your kiddo feels comfortable, you can remove the top of the potty chair and place it on a real toilet to be used as a potty seat. This is super handy for traveling too!

Pros

  • Attractive design
  • 2-in-1 potty training system (potty chair and potty seat combo)
  • Handles
  • Backrest

Cons

  • Short — some parents say the seat sits too low to the ground

Overall

This would be a good potty training chair/seat combo for younger kids. Because it sits so low to the ground, you probably wouldn’t want to use it for an older child or tall child.

Jool Child Potty Training Chair

Child Potty Training Chair for Boys and Girls, Handles & Splash Guard - Comfortable Seat for Toddler - Jool Baby (Aqua)
Price$$$
Quality
Popularity

For those who would like to touch as little as possible when cleaning a child’s potty chair, the Jool Child Potty Training Chair is designed quite well. A 10-year manufacturer’s warranty is included with the Jool chair too.

Our favorite part: This potty chair is designed super well, minimizing the chance of spilling or touching anything inside.

Unlike many potty chairs, the Jool chair allows you to pull out the inner seat from the back without having to remove the top seat first. When the potty chair is not in use, the included cover can be placed on the opening to prevent little hands from touching the inner “icky” seat.

A backrest allows your little one to sit comfortably and handles on the side of the seat help your child sit down and stand back up. Unfortunately, for boys, peeing in the Jool chair is risky as there’s no splash guard!

Pros

  • Pull inner seat from the back (no need to remove top seat first)
  • A cover can be placed over the potty hole to keep it covered when not in use
  • Backrest and handles
  • Includes a 10-year manufacturer’s warranty

Cons

  • No splash guard (risky for boys)

Overall

The Jool potty chair is designed quite well except for the fact that it doesn’t include a good splash guard. If you have a boy, I would consider purchasing a different potty chair.

The First Years Baby Shark Potty Training Seat

The First Years Pinkfong Baby Shark Potty Training Toilet and Toddler Toilet Seat - Potty Training Toilet Seat with Fun Flushing and Cheering Sounds
Price$$$$
Quality
Popularity

Baby Shark! Doo, doo, doo doo doo doo. Your Baby Shark fan will enjoy potty training with this Baby Shark Potty Training Seat from The First Years. It even comes with a sticker tracking chart!

Our favorite part: It’s designed with a button for “flushing” and a button for “cheering.”

This potty training chair resembles a full-sized toilet (minus the Baby Shark decals), which may help your little one get comfortable with transitioning to a full-sized toilet eventually. It is a 2-in-1 combo potty chair, allowing you to remove the seat and place it on the real toilet when you’re child is ready to transition. This is also convenient for taking with you when you’re traveling if you don’t want to bring the whole potty chair.

As your little one learns to potty on the toilet, they can track their “wins” and celebrate with the Baby Shark chart — stickers included! They also can press the “flush” button and the “cheer” button for fun sound effects.

Not a Baby Shark fan but like this design? The First Years also carries this potty chair in other themes such as Paw Patrol, Mickey Mouse, Toy Story, and more.

Pros

  • 2-in-1 combo chair
  • Two buttons with sound effects
  • Somewhat realistic toilet design
  • Includes Baby Shark tracking chart and stickers
  • Also available in other themes (e.g. Paw Patrol)

Cons

  • A lot of buyers have complained about the back of the toilet popping off easily

Overall

This is a really cute potty chair with kid-friendly themes and a tracking chart, but it may not hold up for long.

BabyBjorn Smart Potty

BabyBjörn Smart Potty, Deep Green/White
Price$$$
Quality
Popularity

The BabyBjorn Smart Potty chair has been designed with smooth and rounded edges for a comfortable place for your child to potty. Soft colors are aesthetically pleasing if you’d rather not buy a traditional cartoon-ish potty chair.

Our favorite part: The rubber edging along the bottom is perfect for tile and smooth floors.

If you’ve ever heard a plastic-bottomed potty chair slide across a smooth floor, you know it’s not the most appealing sound. With the Smart Potty, you don’t have to worry about that annoying sound because the bottom of the chair is lined with soft rubber. This helps keep the potty chair in place so that your little one isn’t moving it all over the place.

This is definitely a smaller potty option so if you don’t want a chair that takes up much space or you need something that’s easy to travel with, the BabyBjorn is a great choice.

Pros

  • Smooth and rounded edges
  • Soft color options
  • Space-saver
  • Rubber edging along the bottom of the chair
  • Great price

Cons

  • Narrow seat
  • No backrest

Overall

The main perk of the BabyBjorn Smart Potty is its space-saving size. It’s nice to choose from a variety of soft colors that don’t scream “potty chair!”

Soraco Frog Potty Training Urinal

Soraco Frog Potty Training Urinal for Toddler Boys Toilet with Aiming Target-Green
Price$$
Quality
Popularity

If you’d rather teach your boy to pee standing up, the Soraco Frog Potty Training Urinal is a cool alternative to using a traditional potty chair. This urinal attaches to the bathroom wall with suction cups and a hook.

Our favorite part: A spinning piece in the urinal helps your child aim and makes using the urinal a little more fun.

Just like a traditional potty chair, you can empty the urinal easily. Because of the suction cup and hook attachments, you can easily adjust the height of this training urinal as your child grows.

Pros

  • Very reasonably priced
  • Can easily adjust the height
  • Spinning piece to help with aim
  • Attaches to wall with suction cups and a hook

Cons

  • May have trouble sticking it to the wall
  • Can be tempting for a child to play with it

Overall

If your child is self-disciplined enough to not want to put their hands in it, this is a good way to train your son to pee standing up.

Price$$$$
Popularity

For a super cute toddler potty chair, consider the Summer My Size Potty with Transition Ring & Storage with room in the back for storage. Another benefit of this potty is it looks realistic which will appeal to many toddlers who want to be just like mommy or daddy.

Our favorite part: The realistic design with storage, a flushing handle, and an integrated splash guard make this a fabulous find.

In addition, the top of the potty seat can be removed and placed on a full-sized toilet when it’s time to transition. Choose from three colors, white, gray, or pink. Everything about this potty will help to raise children to potty just like older siblings and adults with a familiar design and comfort. Store wipes

Pros

  • Toilet hand flushes to encourage children
  • Removable potty seat for a real toilet
  • Storage compartment for books, toys, wipes, or toilet paper
  • Easy to clean with a removable bowl
  • Integrated splash guard

No other potty seat looks as realistic and helps kids to feel bigger. It’s designed to work. The only thing it’s missing is a dedicated toilet paper holder.

Potty Training Seats Compared

The table below compares only the recommended products on this page. A low or high Price means it is low or high compared to the other products listed. The Popularity Score reflects how often readers click on and buy the product. The Quality Score is our assessment of the overall performance and satisfaction with the product compared to others in the table.

Buying Considerations

Secure Fit

Some potty seats do not suction to the toilet seat and are easy for kids to put on the toilet when they need it, which is great. But since they don’t suction, that usually means there’s a higher chance of the seat shifting around when in use.

Portability

Lightweight potty seats that are slim are great for packing up and taking with you when traveling. Potty seats that tightly secure to the toilet or include a ladder will not be as easy to travel with or use in a public bathroom.

Smaller potty chairs are great for small spaces, but may not be as comfortable for your little one to sit on.

Gender

If you’re potty training a boy, you are going to want to find a potty seat or chair with a good splash guard to help prevent spraying.

If you’re potty training a girl, this addition is usually not as big of a deal, but it’s still nice to have in case there’s a little splashing that happens.

Aesthetic

Some potty seats and chairs are colorful, bright, and full of favorite cartoon character designs to help make potty training exciting. On the other hand, some potty seats and chairs have a simple design that is similar to a traditional white toilet seat.

Space

If you have lots of room in the bathroom, there shouldn’t be a space problem with any of the above potty seats or potty chairs.

On the other hand, if you have a smaller bathroom or lack space around the toilet, you may want to consider purchasing a potty seat or chair that does not come with a ladder or is smaller in size overall.

FAQs – Potty Training Toilet Seats

Does my child need to use a potty seat or chair when potty training?

Many children are not yet ready to balance themselves on a full-sized toilet when they are new to going potty all alone. Since they are smaller, there’s a greater chance for them to fall in the toilet, creating fear of using it again.

Potty seats are a great transition to using a full-sized toilet because they protect the child from falling and help keep them comfortable as they learn. Potty seats also encourage children to potty independently without an adult helping them stay in place.

Will a potty seat shift on the toilet seat?

The majority of potty seats fit most standard toilet sizes, which helps prevent shifting. For a better fit to the toilet, choose a potty seat that either suctions to the toilet or has an adjustable dial for a better fit. If the seat shifts so much that your child isn’t sitting directly over the toilet seat hole, you should find a better option.

What is better: potty chair or potty seat?

A potty chair can be a great place to start when potty training because it can be placed anywhere and a child can sit on it themselves without help. A potty seat can speed up the transition to a full-sized potty and is more sanitary since there’s hardly any clean-up.

At what age should I start potty training?

Rather than aiming for a specific age to start potty training, looking for signs of readiness is a good start. For example, if your child is starting to seem interested in the big potty, underwear, or not being in a diaper/pull-up, it may be time to start potty training. Using potty training pants during this transition helps tremendously.

For advice on night potty training, check out our article here.

Should I teach my boy to sit or stand when potty training?

This is a personal preference. Some parents find that it’s easier for boys to learn how to potty sitting down first before they teach them to stand and potty. Sitting also helps prevent messes.
