Best Hook On and Clip On High Chairs

Hook on high chairs are incredibly convenient. Because of their light weight and ability to hook onto many table tops, it’s possible to own just one high chair and use it everywhere you go. This constant use of the same chair could provide the consistency your child needs to focus on eating meals.

My favorite hook on high chair is the Inglesina Fast Table Chair. It’s easy to use, fits almost anywhere, and is great quality.

Here are all the best hook on high chairs on the market today!

All of these Hook On High Chairs are able to hold up to 37 lbs.  The Inglesina Fast Table Chair weighs 4.2 lbs and can fit on almost any tables up to 3.5″ thick.  The Chicco 360 Hook-On Chair weighs more at 10.4 lbs but offers 6 different positioning to allow you to feed your baby at multiple directions.

Inglesina Fast Table Chair

If you happened to read my post on the best high chairs for small spaces, it’s no surprise that I picked the Inglesina Fast Table Chair as my favorite. It was my favorite hook on high chair then, and it is still my favorite hook on high chair now. Here’s why.

Why It’s So Great

Because of its universal twist-tight couplings, the Inglesina Fast Table Chair can fit on most tables up to 3.5″ thick. Plus, because of the design, it doesn’t leave any scratches or marks on the surface of your table.

The seat is firm, and there is a back support for your baby. This design helps keep your child as comfortable as possible while eating.

When you’re finished using this clamp on high chair, it folds down. Having a collapsible high chair makes it easier to transport. A carry bag is attached to the bottom of the high chair. Simply place the high chair in the bag, and you’re ready to go!

This high chair seat is machine washable, which makes cleaning up after meal time a lot easier. Plus, the seats come in a variety of beautiful, bright colors.

This model also includes a tray that snaps on to the chair’s arms. The deep grooves on the tray help keep your child’s food right in front of them.

Product Information

  • Item Weight:  4.2 pounds
  • Product Dimensions:  17 x 14 x 11 inches
  • Maximum Child Weight:  37 pounds

Possible Issues

  • There is a gap between the front of the chair and the table. Whether you are placing the food on your table or the tray, it can be swiped into the space between your table’s edge and your baby.
  • There is only a buckle that secures your child around the waist.
  • Once your child can stand, they become a significant fall risk.
  • As with all hook on high chairs, there is always the possibility that you could not install the high chair correctly and it could fall off of your table with your child secured within it.

Chicco 360 Hook On Chair

The Chicco 360 Hook On Chair offers a unique experience for your little one. Instead of them being stationary and only able to look at what’s in front of them, this chair offers a different view.

Why It’s So Great

With ratchet and lock technology and rubberized grips, this high chair should stay in place once secured. Then, place your little one in and choose from 6 different positions. Changing positions allows you to feed your child from multiple angles. Plus, if they get bored, you can spin them in a different direction to check out the view.

This baby table high chair is also able to fold and comes with a storage bag, making it a good option for travel. Plus, the clip-on tray and seat cover are easily washable. The tray can be cleaned in the dishwasher, and the seat cover is machine-washable.

Chicco makes some of the best high chairs, so it’s no surprise that this table high chair makes the list, too.

Product Information

  • Item Weight:  10.4 pounds
  • Product Dimensions:  28 x 12 x 15 inches
  • Maximum Child Weight:  37 pounds

Possible Issues

  • Ten pounds is kind of heavy to tote around regularly.
  • Be sure to read the instructions to verify that this high chair will work with your table.
  • Although the seat cover is machine-washable, there have been several complaints that the seat cover is extremely difficult to clean.

The Lobster High Chair from phil&teds is a great option for those who need something lightweight. If you plan on having a moveable feast, you need a high chair that can move, too. I love that this is featherweight aluminum and that it packs into a small and convenient carrying case for meals on the go.

Why It’s So Great

This entire high chair weighs only 3.8 pounds! Seeing as to how it’s going to be dangling off my table with my child in it, I like that there’s no added weight. And although it’s super light aluminum metal, the back and harness are still substantially padded so that baby stays comfy.

This high chair can be used indoors or outdoors because of the heavy duty aluminum “lobster” table clamps. It’ll work for tables ranging from 0.8″ up to 3.75″ in thickness. Once clamped on, it’ll support a baby from as small as 3 months up to a 3 year old toddler. The weight limit is 37 pounds.

As an added bonus, this table high chair is easy to clean. The tray is dishwasher safe, and all the fabric slides off the frame for simple handwashing. It all wipes down easily, too.

Product Information

  • Item Weight:  3.8 pounds
  • Product Dimensions:  12.2 x 13.4 x 12.2 inches
  • Maximum Child Weight:  37 pounds

Possible Issues

  • The clamps will only work on tables that are completely flat on both the top and bottom, so there can’t be any lips or ledges.
  • The leg holes are pretty small, and as a result, if your baby is chunky, getting them in and out will be a pain!
  • The seat and harness can be a bit awkward, since the seat sits really low to the table and the harness sits up high.
  • The tray is great, but it doesn’t stay on well; baby will probably figure out how to pull it off.

The TCBunny Hook On High Chair is for children between 6 and 36 months old that folds up easily into the included storage bag to take on the go!

Why It’s So Great

This hook on high chair is designed to be used with tables with a thickness between 0.8″ and 3.3″. Once attached, you can easily tighten or loosen for a secure fit. To prevent scratching or sliding, there are non-slip grippers on the clamps.

A fully adjustable 5-point safety belt in the chair keeps baby secure. The shoulder straps help keep baby more secure than the typical 3-point harness found in these types of high chairs. Th front also has a thicker A-shaped design to help keep baby from sliding out. A removable PP seat pad helps to make cleaning easy.

Having a tray included makes like easier when dining out. No more putting sweet baby’s food on the sticky restaurant table or giving them a plate which they then hurl across the restaurant. The included tray is 14.5 by 10.3 inches, so there’s plenty of space. It easily fits in the carry bag as well.

This chair folds down and is easy to store if you’re trying to save space. It’s also great for taking on the go for a great way to easily seat baby when out in public or at another person’s house. The total weight is about 4lbs, so it shouldn’t really weigh down the storage bag that’s included (via a sewn-in pocket) with this product!

Product Information

  • Item Weight: 4.1 pounds
  • Product Dimensions (expanded): 12.99 x 16.53 x 10.62 inches
  • Maximum Child Weight: 37 pounds

Possible Issues

  • This hook on high chair won’t work on certain tables so keep that in mind when taking it out to restaurants and other places
  • The seat bottom might sag and cause baby to shift forward, which is uncomfortable for them for long periods of time

FAQs For Best Hook On High Chairs

Are hook-on or clip-on high chairs safe?

Yes, as long as a few guidelines are followed.

You want to make sure that you don’t put your child into a hook-on high chair until they can sit up well on their own. Also, make sure you have read all safety information including maximum weight restrictions.

With proper installation and double-checking that no parts of the chair are damaged or not secure, you should have a safe clip-on high chair for your baby to sit in.

Should I get a hook-on high chair or a regular high chair?

There are a few reasons why you may enjoy using a hook-on high chair.

If you’re trying to save on space, a hook-on high chair saves so much space since it doesn’t have legs like a regular high chair. It also allows baby to sit right up at the table if there’s limited floor space. If you enjoy going to public restaurants and other’s houses, a hook-on high chair will be the easiest chair to travel with and use on the spot.

On the other hand, a regular high chair is undoubtedly the safer option because it is sitting on the ground rather than raised up in the air.

When can babies sit in a hook-on high chair?

Babies are said to be able to sit in a hook-on high chair once they are able to sit up on their own. Sitting up on their own (without a chair) means they have enough core strength to sit up straight in a hook-on high chair without leaning or toppling over.

What are the weight limits for hook-on high chairs?

Many hook on high chairs have a weight limit of 37 pounds. Make sure to double-check the specific product’s weight limit to make sure you’re using the product in a safe manner.

Can I put my 4 month old in a high chair?

Babies are ready for the high chair when they are able to sit up comfortably, at around six months. Until such time, they should be held or seated in a reclining chair for feedings. (Warning: do not feed a child solid food in the reclined position.) Unless it is a reclining chair, then, you should not plan to put your child in a high chair before six months.

How long do babies stay in high chairs?

While it varies from child to child and family to family depending upon the size and development of the child, other available seating/feeding options, and the family’s mode of operation, most children will transition from the high chair at about two years.

Does my baby really need a high chair?

Most families choose to purchase, for their baby, either a traditional high chair or one or more feeding alternatives. The traditional high chair is nice in that it raises the child to a height more conducive to adult assistance and may be his first chair at the family table.

If you have room for it, it’s always there, ready to receive your baby for feeding, joining the family at the table, even a haircut. Other alternatives for upright feeding (necessary for solid food) are booster seats, hook-on high chairs, or slings that fit over the backs of certain kinds of chairs to safely support and contain your baby.

What is a space saver high chair?

A space-saver high chair is any high chair designed either to occupy less space than standard or to fold for storage between uses. You will find many designs available on the market.

What are the feeding chair options for travel/portability?

There are many, and some of them may be substituted for a traditional high chair at home, depending upon your space requirements and preferred mode of operations. Briefly:

  • a booster seat fits in an existing chair. For safety, it should be attachable to the host chair in some way. Some high chairs have a detachable seat which can also be used as a booster.
  • a hook-on high chair attaches to and hangs off the table. The various hook-on seats have varying weight restrictions and may not fit on certain kinds of tables.
  • a sling (a general term) fits over the back of some standard chairs to support and contain your baby. Note that this is not, technically, a high chair. It is a means of seating your child in a standard chair for feeding when you are away from home.

Before You Buy A Hook On High Chair

Before you purchase your clip-on high chair, get out the tape measure. You really want to be certain that the high chair you choose will be compatible with your table, so take the time to measure correctly.

Also, read the instructions for installation before you buy. Not all hook on high chairs are suitable for all table surfaces. You will want to make sure you’re picking the best high chair for your baby and for your table. Remember, if the hook on high chair is not designed to be used with your table surface, it’s not safe to try.

If you are buying a clamp on high chair to work with traveling and eating at restaurants, try to find one that has a universal mounting system. Also look for a wide range of table widths that it will fit. You’ll be happy to have your own clean baby space at a restaurant, as one study says that restaurant high chairs can be dirtier than toilet seats!

My Recommendation

Although all of these high chairs are great options, I still think the best hook on high chair is the Inglesina Fast Table Chair. Honestly, I love seeing that image of all those different colored chairs hooked on to the table for the birthday party. Orange is my son’s favorite color, and you just don’t find many orange high chairs for sale. Aside from that, this seat gets great reviews and is universally loved and preferred over all the other high chairs.
