Enfamil Reguline Formula – A Real Mom Review

Enfamil Reguline Formula supports a healthy digestive system for better health for your baby. Prebiotics help to create healthy bacteria for softer, more comfortable stools than other baby formulas can create.

The question is, does Enfamil Reguline Formula live up to the hype and help your baby’s stomach? Find out all the facts about this popular name brand formula so you can decide if it’s the right choice for your baby.

Overall, we find Enfamil offers high-quality formula, but we wish the formula did not have corn syrup, although most formula’s made for stomach troubles have corn syrup. At least Reguline does not have corn syrup at the top of the list of ingredients. Also, no other formula offers a formulation specific to reducing constipation, putting Reguline in a class of its own.

Enfamil Reguline Formula Review

Key Benefits of Enfamil Reguline Formula

The main benefit of Enfamil Reguline Formula is that it is designed to help babies make softer, more comfortable poop. Babies can’t drink prune juice to help with constipation, and often the high iron levels in formula in comparison to breastmilk can back babies up. Reguline hopes to eliminate this problem for a more comfortable, happy baby.

Prebiotics are the active ingredient ready to encourage babies’ internal organs to function better. Moreover, the formula uses easy-to-digest proteins for more comfortable digestion.

If your baby is often constipated or gassy, then you may want to consider Enfamil Reguline formula for more comfortable bowel movements.

Finally, the formula also touts brain-nourishing DHA and choline to encourage proper brain growth similar to breastmilk. Let’s take a look at the ingredients.

Ingredients

All baby formulas use similar ingredients to create a healthy and nutritious meal for babies. Some of the ingredients in baby formula mimic breastmilk; however, the vast majority of baby formula uses cow’s milk. As human babies aren’t cows, some formulas breakdown the ingredients better to help human babies digest the cow products easier.

Overall, compared to other baby formulas, Reguline offers a decent ingredient list with very few concerns. Take a closer look.

Fats

Babies need roughly half their diet to be fat to encourage brain and body growth. Breastmilk provides an ultra-creamy mix made of a little over half fat, which is what Enfamil Reguline seeks to mimic. However, unlike breastmilk, the formula uses fatty oils to create the fatty portion of the mix.

In this formula, you get a mixture of palm olein, coconut, soy, and sunflower oils to make up the vast majority of the fat. All of these fats work well and are often found in a variety of mixtures in baby formula.

However, palm olein oil may cause a little concern. While it’s a fatty acid similar to those found in breastmilk, it comes with controversy – baby’s body cannot break down palm oil the same way they can the fats in breastmilk.

As the body cannot absorb the palm oil, it binds the excess to calcium and prevents the absorption of the calcium. This translates to tougher stool despite the desire in this formula to make softer stools. Don’t worry, other aspects of the formula do help reduce constipation.

Furthermore, babies need calcium for strong bones and other bodily activities, and this ingredient reduces calcium absorption, which is why most formulas (this one included) add extra calcium to make up the difference.

As for the other oils, the coconut and sunflower are completely safe and fabulous forms of fat the body can easily digest. As with all soy, it can act as an estrogen in the body and can disrupt normal hormonal functions. It’s often an allergen in baby formula and it’s often genetically modified, which reduces its quality.

ARA and DHA

Both ARA and DHA are fatty acids, but they aren’t considered essential as the body can make these on their own. They show up in Enfamil Reguline as mortierella alpina oil and crypthecodinium chohnii oil. While not essential, they are helpful as they are the ingredients that people take fish oil to gain.

Next, both ingredients are found readily in breastmilk, which is why they are added to baby formula. Definitely use a formula with these ingredients since they are beneficial to many body processes, including infant eye and brain health.

Essentially, these are long-chain omega fatty acids, both 3 and 6, with both. If you are taking fish oils for yourself, then you know these acids are good for the body and ready to help with growth.

Prebiotics and Probiotics

Not many baby formulas offer both prebiotics and probiotics despite their dynamic duo status. So far, only Gerber formula offers both prebiotics and probiotics; if this is a concern along with stomach troubles for your baby, consider trying Gerber Gentle Pro

If you don’t know what prebiotics and probiotics are, then you are in for a treat. Probiotics are good bacteria that help the body’s digestive tract to work better. Prebiotics are food for that good bacteria, which is what makes them work so well together.

In Enfamil Reguline Formula, the prebiotics shows up as polydextrose and galactooligosaccharides. That’s right! The formula includes two prebiotics to feed the army of good bacteria in their stomach and create a healthier digestional tract.

Breastmilk naturally contains prebiotics, which is one of the reason’s why it’s found in this formula, along with the benefits for gut health. These fibers don’t break down and instead ferment in the body to create endless benefits.

If you want to try reguline but still want to add probiotics to your baby’s diet, you can with Enfamil Vitamins Infant Probiotics Dual Probiotics Drop. Simply add the drops right to your formula to gain the benefits.

Protein

Protein helps to build muscles along with helping with practically all bodily functions. In baby formula, the main two potential sources of protein are either whey or casein proteins.

Whey protein digests quickly while casein takes longer to breakdown and can promote fullness. However, casein causes most milk allergies and digestive issues, while whey is less likely to cause problems. So which is in Enfamil Reguline?

In this formula, you get whey protein concentrate solids. You will notice in the formula it says “whey protein concentrate solids (soy).” Don’t worry, this is still cow’s milk whey; however, the company uses some soy enzymes to help break down the whey, and they legally need to tell you when they use soy.

Enfamil also uses partially hydrolyzed nonfat milk as the main base for the formula. While partially hydrolyzed sounds strange, it simply means the proteins are broken down into more digestible pieces your baby can stomach better. Yes, this is something formulas need, as only baby cows can digest milk properly, and human babies need a little more help.

Both of the sources of protein found in Enfamil Reguline are great for your baby’s stomach as a substitute for breastmilk. Your baby’s intestines won’t have to do as much milk to digest the product thanks to the thoughtful protein use. As a matter of fact, babies are less likely to develop early diabetes markers when fed hydrolyzed protein.

Carbohydrates and Sugars

Carbohydrates and sugars act as an energy source, which is why you will find carbs in both breastmilk and formula. In Enfamil Reguline, the carbs and sugars included are corn syrup solids and lactose.

Breastmilk also has lactose but, of course, from a human and not a cow. However, breastmilk does not have corn syrup, and the best formulas do not have corn syrup. The one thing we don’t like about this formula is the corn syrup or, as it’s commonly known, glucose.

About 40 percent of baby formula’s calories comes from the carbs (us parents probably eat a little bit more), and when half of those carbs are pure sugar, then your baby will start to crave sugar. Not to mention it cause higher insulin surges in babies and can have long-term consequences for the baby’s pancreas.

Lastly, while the proteins are made with preventing diabetes in mind, the corn syrup completely undoes the benefits to fight sugar issues. Trust us, the minute you start feeding your baby sweet solids like applesauce, their love of sugar will begin; it should not start with formula.

The good news is, Enfamil Reguline does not use maltodextrin, which has been shown to cause significant spikes in blood sugar, even more so than with corn syrup. Another advantage of Enfamil Reguline is the corn syrup solids are lower on the list than the other ingredients, meaning it’s not the main ingredient like with other formulas such as ProSobee or even Enfamil Gentlease, which has much higher amounts of corn syrup.

Ultimately, we would like to see the formula made with lactose as the only carbohydrate.

Vitamins and Minerals

Enfamil Reguline Constipation Baby Formula Milk Powder to Promote Soft Stools, Omega 3, Probiotics, Iron, Immune Support, 20.4 Ounce (Packaging May Vary)

The list of vitamins and minerals in Enfamil Reguline are very similar to those in other formulas and regulated. Your baby will get all of the nutrients they need from this formula, including:

  • Vitamin A, C, D, E, K, B6, B12
  • Niacin
  • Folic Acid
  • Pantothenic Acid
  • Biotin
  • Choline
  • Inositol

As for minerals, your baby gets what they need, including:

  • Calcium
  • Phosphorus
  • Magnesium
  • Iron
  • Zinc
  • Manganese
  • Copper
  • Iodine
  • Selenium
  • Sodium
  • Potassium
  • Chloride

Quick side note – all baby formulas (made in the US) come with a lot of iron. In fact, it’s more than your baby needs. High iron can cause an upset stomach and constipation. However, most formula offers 1.8 mg of iron while Enfamil only offers 1.5 mg, which is much nicer for your baby’s tummy, as it means less nausea and upset.

When you switch to type two baby formula, the iron content usually goes up. If constipation is a problem for your infant, make sure to check the iron content when you go up to a level two formula. Mind you, the iron content is safe, it just has stomach side effects.

If you want less iron content for babies with extra sensitive stomachs, consider using a European formula as they have significantly lower doses of iron.

Similarity to Breast Milk

Enfamil and Similac make several baby formulas with designer ingredients – that is, ingredients that make formula more like breast milk. Reguline is not one of them.

Enfamil Reguline focuses more on helping babies who suffer from constipation than providing ingredients more similar to breastmilk. The only ingredients in similar to breastmilk in Reguline are the prebiotics, vitamins, and minerals, but even these aren’t the same ones found in breastmilk.

If you want a formula more similar to breastmilk, take a closer look at Enfamil Enspire, which is the brand’s closest formula to breastmilk. Try Enspire if you want to provide your baby with lactoferrin and MFGM.

Similac makes the Pro Advance with special ingredients not found in any other formula as well. Try this formula if you want your baby to have 2′-FL HMO.

Now, if only we could get a baby formula with all three of those ingredients, prebiotics, probiotics, and if we are dreaming, a formula that is organic and non-GMO too!

Quality

Speaking of organic and non-GMO, Enfamil Reguline is neither. While it’s a highly regarded formula with quality ingredients, if you want either organic or non-GMO, you need to find another option. As of right now, Enfamil does not offer any organic formulas at all and even squash the question when you go to their website, and essentially saying organic isn’t worth the cost.

Similac does make an organic formula and many other organic formulas are available as well if you find this to be a priority. Also, Enfamil Enspire and several of their other formulas are guaranteed non-GMO, but you do need to go with their premium formulas for this option. However, they do not really support the non-GMO movement, and if you do, then you may want to try another brand.

You can also try Pure Bliss by Similac to avoid growth hormones, antibiotics, GMO, and get nature immune support.

Ages and Stages

Like the vast majority of Enfamil formulas, Reguline is for the ages of zero to twelve months. Enfamil does not offer a stage two of reguline for toddlers.

Also, this is not a formula designed for premature babies.

Before using for a premature baby, check with your pediatrician in both infant or toddler formulas.

Common Problems with Enfamil Reguline Formula

The only common problem with Enfamil Reguline is it does not reduce or end constipation for all babies.

For some babies, the formula can cause gas, too. Babies who do not react well to Reguline may want to try Enfamil NeuroPro Sensitivefor lactose sensitivity or Enfamil Enspire Gentlease instead.

FAQs About Enfamil Reguline Formula

How does Enfamil Reguline compare to Similac Pro-Total Comfort?

Similac’s Pro-Total Comfort offers a few advantages and disadvantages over Enfamil Reguline.

For one, it offers 2′-FL HMO, which is found in breastmilk and provides immune support.

Second, it’s also reported by parents to reduce fussiness and gas.

Third, it has hydrolyzed proteins for easier digestion and skips on the growth hormones too. However, the first ingredient in the Similac Pro-Total Comfort uses corn maltodextrin as its active ingredient. This can cause blood sugar spikes, which is absolutely unnecessary and why we cannot recommend the formula over Enfamil Reguline.

It’s also missing prebiotics, which is another reason Reguline wins over Similac Pro-Total Comfort.

Overall, Enfamil wins against Similac with less added sugars. Also, Similac doesn’t make a formula specifically designed to combat constipation.

How long will Enfamil Reguline take to reduce constipation?

Every baby is different, but you should see a difference by the end of the first week or roughly one container, depending on the age of your baby. If, after a week, your baby doesn’t have any changes in bowel movements, you may want to talk to your baby’s doctor.

What should I try if my baby still has constipation after trying Enfamil Reguline?

At this point, you may want to talk to your doctor and see if your baby has a lactose issue. You will still have many options like soy-based formula or specialty formulas like Similac Alimentum or Elecare. You can also try a lactose sensitive formula like Enfamil Neuropro Sensitive

Your doctor should be more capable of determining what is causing constipation and help to make any changes. You can also try bicycling your baby’s legs. Babies who are old enough for food can try high-fiber foods or fruit juice.

Final Thoughts

No other formula company makes a formula specific to reducing constipation although, the ingredient list is very similar to other formulas using prebiotics and hydrolyzed proteins to make the formula easier to digest.

Overall, Enfamil Reguline is a fantastic option, but we would love to see the formula without corn syrup and GMOs. As for the latter, many formula brands are coming on board, but all still use corn syrups.

If your baby has constipation, try Reguline before other options, and if those don’t work, you can try other gentle formulas with higher corn syrup levels. Reguline does offer a formula not otherwise available as it’s the only option designed to reduce constipation in as little as a week.
