How Gifts and Toys Were Chosen

Your son is growing older, as a result, he is now reaching for new milestones. As he learns old milestones he wants new challenges. While your ten-year-old son may seem more mature now, he is only halfway to an adult and still needs to learn skills like focus, precision, patience and many more skills. We chose gifts to help cover his new milestones.

Physical Milestones

Your boy is quite agile outside. He has better speed, balance, and coordination. Soon puberty will set in and he still needs tons of exercise but he does not want to participate in “baby-ish” activities. Try encouraging team sports, running, biking or anything else that gets him outside. Make sure he has the right clothes for every season so he can be outside whenever the sun is in the sky.

Try to limit screen time to a couple of hours a day. That is to say, he may become interested in trying more challenging activities like skateboarding or tree climbing. Just remember to tell him to practice safety practices and also make sure he has the right gear, like knee and elbow pads and a helmet.

Emotional Milestones

Make sure your son is sleeping at least eight hours every night (ten hours is much better for this age) to combat emotional outburst. Sleep is equally important as exercise to promote emotional well-being. Most often he can keep his emotions in check now but may need reminders and short breaks for physical release to clear tension in his head.

At ten, he is questioning authority and imitating older kids. Although he has always known the family values and beliefs he is now accepting and understanding on a higher level. If he manages to look past his tunnel vision (most boys are very busy at this age) he will begin to recognize facial and body language.

Ten is also the age of awkward. Your son is now in double digits but also still a kid and not a teen. He is starting middle school next year and ready for some growth spurts. All of these changes can lead to feeling awkward in his own skin and head. Enjoy all the hugs and kisses you get during this age because boys tend to give less and less affection while feeling more involved in the family.

Social Milestones

Your boy is quite skilled at communication and forming more sophisticated relationships with family and friends. His vocabulary and speech patterns are improving too. Now, the most important social aspects facing your son are peer pressure and bullying. Make sure to provide him with techniques to cope with both if either is an issue for him.

Cognitive Milestones

Boy is your son’s brain active right now. He is learning complicated topics at school like reading chapter books, division, fractions, logic, abstract thought, metaphors and more. After hours, he is attempting to learn sound judgment and finding new interest in pop culture and sports thanks to an increased attention span. He may spend a little more time on his appearance, but may still forget to change socks and wear deodorant. Make sure to help him out in these areas too.

Summary

The list above are toys chosen to work with your ten-year-olds current skill levels and the skills he is working towards. If he is going through puberty now his testosterone levels will be increasing and he will have excess energy. Sports and outdoor play are the best options for your kiddo, that is why so many of the toys above take him outside.

For bad weather days, you need some other options like books to improve brain and reading skills. Indoor active play toys like the basketball net and air hockey table. Science toys also help to improve the current milestones your son needs to learn like the microscope which requires concentration and finer skills to improve attention to detail and focus.

Building toys are still a favorite and possibly one of the few toys he still plays with by himself or with friends (at least when he can’t have his Nintendo DS). Toys without borders will encourage his imagination and help him to stay in the land of childhood a little while longer. Any of the toys above should appeal to your little man because of the skills he is learning now. Go forth, and wrap presents!

FAQ’s

How do I get my son to clean his toys?

If you figure it out let us know. Some boys are naturally neat and pick up after themselves, others need constant reminders and threats of no television or video games for the month. Then when they do clean and do their chores, everything gets shoved in the closet, under the bed, or in a drawer. Consistency is key. Kids are home for 18 years because that is how long it takes to train them. Never let up on insisting a clean room is mandatory and sometime around the age of thirty-five, his wife will still be training him.

What if my son breaks or loses most of his toys?

Welcome to parenting. Boys break, lose, and destroy most of their toys. This is why you can only find girls toys at yard sales or toys boys didn’t like. Above we mentioned a great budget price for a ten-year-old boy is $60 because no one wants to be out of $100 when the new toys are broken after rough play by your son and his six rowdy friends. Try teaching him to put away his toys neatly and not replacing broken toys he loves, let him replace them with his allowance or birthday money.

What if my son doesn’t like sports?

Not all boys like sports. He may still enjoy some organized activities like swimming or car racing. Try taking him to different events to take him to. Save money by taking him to school events like swim meets, plays, and volunteer opportunities. He may just be a loner and prefer to work alone. At this age in school, he will be beginning to work in groups and this should help him to be a bit more interested in group activities if he is not.

I cannot get my son outside to play and off the computer, what should I do?

Lockdown his account or unplug the router. Parenting is tough and sometimes you need to make tough decisions. Set consistent boundaries and ensure they are not crossed. Try making computers off limits on weekdays so he can focus on school work and then let him have larger spans of time online or video games on weekends.

My son doesn’t like learning toys like construction or science sets, how do I get him to try them out?

Try playing with him. Some kids find science and construction toys overwhelming because they like the boundaries. You may want to try getting less complicated toys, like a specific Lego set or toy that only performs one function.

How do I keep my son from injuring himself while playing on his scooter?

Safety gear is essential for keeping your son safe. Knee pads, elbow pads, mouth guard, and a helmet will help to keep him safe. The trick is to get him to wear the safety gear. For some reason, kids have decided its uncool to wear safety gear. Therefore, try explaining to your son how important the gear is and specifically how it will protect him. At ten, your son is capable of understanding logic and reasoning.

Wrap Up

Did you find a gift for your special boy?  You know him best, so consider their interests and personality when choosing a gift. Purchasing the best present for a 10-year-old boy is not easy. Their tastes and trends change regularly. However, I hope this list of more general themed toys will help you find the perfect gift for the boy on your list. Whether you know the child well and understand their specific interests, or if you just need a general gift idea, these gift options are sure to please. In conclusion, our best suggestion is the National Geographic Mega Construction Engineering Set because it is a great learning toy and a lot of fun too.
