The 10 Best Ride-On Toys for a 1-Year-Old

Fisher-Price Little People Music Parade Ride-On

Little Tikes Cozy Coupe 30th Anniversary Car

The Best Classic Indoor Ride-On Toy

The Fisher-Price Little People Music Parade Ride-On was our original ride-on toy. We got it for our oldest when he was one. When he was four or so, his little brother took over possession of it. Now that my youngest has outgrown it, one of my nephews is enjoying it.

Why It’s So Great

Even if your little one can’t walk yet, this toy is perfect! When your little one can sit, they can explore all the different songs, sounds from musical instruments, and car noises. Once they can walk, they can push the car around the room. When they’re ready to ride, they can take a seat and roll around the house.

There is a switch to change between five popular children’s songs and five notes from a keyboard. If you (as the adult) discover that you can’t listen to a certain song one more time, just slide the switch so you only have to hear one musical note.

Additionally, the Fisher-Price Little People Music Parade Ride-On plays noises from a trumpet, drum, tuba, and saxophone. The ignition key and gear shift also make car noises.

The seat lifts for ample storage. You will be surprised what goodies your little one can fit in this spacious storage area.

Technical Information

  • Dimensions:  20.8 x 10 x 15.5 inches
  • Item Weight:  4.89 pounds
  • Maximum Child Weight:  It doesn’t say, but I used to ride on this and race my oldest child pretty regularly. It survived through that, a second child, and is now being enjoyed by a nephew.
  • Recommended Age:  12 months-3 years
  • Is Assembly Required?:  No, but 2 AAs are included, so you may have to change the batteries at some point.

Possible Issues

  • The wheels aren’t casters or 360 degree wheels, so you move very linearly. This can be challenging when your little one wants to turn.
  • There’s many noises and no off button.

Little Tikes Cozy Coupe 30th Anniversary Car

Little Tikes Cozy Coupe 30th Anniversary Car

The Best Classic Outdoor Ride-On Toy

Even though it’s now on its 30th anniversary, my little one was the first one to get a Little Tikes Cozy Coupe 30th Anniversary Car. He loved it as a 1-year-old, and he still loves it today.

Why It’s So Great

The Cozy Coupe is perfect for one child to take the wheel and drive around. It has a door that opens and shuts so your little one can get in and out independently.

There is a handle on the back so you can push the car when your little one is too small to operate the car by themselves. Also, there is a removable floor board that you can use during this time. It ensures that you won’t have any accidents of a foot, leg, or entire child slipping out the bottom of the car while you’re pushing it.

Behind the driver is two cup holders that are large enough to hold standard-sized water bottles. At my house, this allows my son to bring his water bottle and plastic baseball bat wherever he’s going.

The Little Tikes Cozy Coupe 30th Anniversary Car is on four Easy-Riding wheels that allow for 360 degree turning. This makes it easier for either you or your little one to navigate.

Also, the car horn really does honk.

Technical Information

  • Dimensions:  29.5 x 16.5 x 33.5 inches
  • Item Weight:  17.65 pounds
  • Maximum Child Weight:  50 pounds
  • Recommended Age:  18 months-5 years
  • Is Assembly Required?:  Yes

Possible Issues

  • Any time you have to assemble something at home, you run the risk of discovering that some pieces are not in the box or some of the holes are not aligned correctly.
  • With this model, a common complaint is that the assembly is too hard. As I recall, this is an accurate complaint.
  • Be aware, you can pay to have this assembled, but that doesn’t necessarily mean that those people will do a better job assembling it than you would.

Little Tikes Push and Ride Racer

Radio Flyer Scoot 2 Pedal

Although our kids are increasingly entertained by lights and sounds, sometimes simpler is better. The Little Tikes Push and Ride Racer lets your kids develop their muscles as well as their imagination.

Why It’s So Great

This toy totally grows with your child. As a smaller baby, beginning at age 9 month or so, they can use the tall back handle to turn this-ride on toy into a walker. Then, as they are ready to use it as a ride-on, they simply move to the front and sit on the seat. No change in assembly required!

This well-made toy has a solid plastic construction. It supports up to 50 pounds, which gets your child up to about age 4!

That being said, it has smaller handlebars and a low body that makes it easy for a toddler to climb on and off.

Maybe the best feature of this toy is the tall back handle itself. Not only does it allow it to become a walker, but it also supports your kid. Best of all, it has small holes that make it the perfect spot to haul around your child’s favorite stuffed animal or doll.

Technical Information

  • Dimensions:  23.5 x 11.2 x 14 inches
  • Item Weight:  6.61 pounds
  • Recommended Age:  Up to 50 pounds, or 9 months – 4 years
  • Is Assembly Required?:  Yes

Possible Issues

  • Assembly is easy in theory, but awful in practice! As one person succinctly put it- it’s worse than building something from Ikea.
  • Front and back wheels are both stationary. That’s ideal for a 1-year-old, but as your child goes, they might get frustrated that they have to manually turn the entire toy.
  • The completely hollow body is a mold concern if the toy is exposed to water. There’s no way to clean it, save taking it all apart.

Fisher-Price Laugh & Learn Stride-to-Ride Puppy

Fisher-Price Laugh & Learn Stride-to-Ride Puppy [Amazon Exclusive]

If your 1-year-old is like mine, then puppies are a favorite. The Fisher-Price Laugh & Learn Stride-to-Ride Puppy combines learning, moving, and having fun.

Why It’s So Great

For starters, there are 2 ways to use this puppy. You can fold the seat up and use the handle as a walker for babies still learning to get around. If you want to develop those leg muscles, you can fold the seat down and use it as a ride-on toy. The wide wheel base makes it really sturdy.

Little Tikes Push and Ride Racer - (Amazon Exclusive)

Babies can start using this at age 9 months, and then they can grow with it all the way up to 3 years. My older kids loved their ride-on toys as they got older, and this one would be a favorite of all kids.

The puppy does fun tricks when the wheels are moving. The ears and head wiggle and the nose and collar light up. The mouth also moves up and down. This is great for teaching your child action and reaction principles.

There are 3 buttons on the front to help you choose if you want ABC mode, 123 mode, or music mode. The puppy interacts with your child and teaches things like manners, body parts, and up to 50 songs!

Finally, this puppy has a built-in shape sorter. You can feed the shapes to the puppy and they’ll go into the belly of the ride on. Or, your child can place the shapes in the holes on the side as they learn.

Technical Information

  • Dimensions:  18.5 x 23 x 13 inches
  • Item Weight:  7.85 pounds
  • Recommended Age:  9 months-3 years
  • Is Assembly Required?:  Yes

Possible Issues

  • The plastic wheels do not work well outside, so this is best suited for indoor play.
  • The seat can’t be put up and down by a child. This is a safety measure, but it would be nice if your older toddler could decide for themselves which mode they want to use.
  • You can’t adjust the volume. Depending on your sound sensitivity level, this might be a good thing or a bad thing!
  • It hogs batteries if your baby plays with it daily.

Radio Flyer Scoot 2 Pedal

Radio Flyer Scoot 2 Pedal

It’s like a right of passage to give your child a Radio Flyer of some kind. The Radio Flyer Scoot 2 Pedal is the perfect option for your 1-year-old: it’ll keep them entertained now, but they’ll grow into the classic red trike.

Why It’s So Great

This durable plastic toy features a molded and shaped plastic seat that has your kiddo’s comfort in mind. There’s a hidden little storage compartment at the very back. It’s not huge, but big enough for a sippy and a snack and a small toy.

The handlebars are thick and easy for small hands to grab. They do actually turn, but the turning radius is very limited. This keeps a younger and less coordinated child from tipping the trike.

During the scoot stage, the front pedals get folded into the wheels. Your child can scoot around on the extra wide and durable wheels to help build their leg strength.

In the trike stage, the front pedals fold out for use. You don’t need any tools to do this- they just click out and lock into place.

Radio Flyer Scoot 2 Pedal

Technical Information

  • Dimensions:  22.5 x 16.60 x 17.60 inches
  • Item Weight:  6.5 pounds
  • Recommended Age:  1 to 3 years
  • Is Assembly Required?:  No

Possible Issues

  • This trike sits really, really low to the ground. The top of the seat is only 8.5 inches off the ground, so if you have a taller child or an older child, it might be too small.
  • Advanced scooters will get frustrated. The way the bike is designed, your child might bump their feet into the back wheels as they scoot. It is definitely a better bike than scoot along toy.
  • There is no push handle for parents like a lot of the other Radio Flyer designs. That’s kind of a bummer since this thing won’t go very fast on it’s own.

Costzon Ride On Push Car

Costzon Ride On Push Car, 3 in 1 Licensed Pagani 6V Electric Battery Powered Toddler Play Toy Car w/ Handle Lights, Music, MP3, Aux Plug in, Push Round Buggy (Red)

This list couldn’t be complete without a powered ride-on. I know, I know. You’re thinking, “Isn’t my baby way to young for that?” Well, maybe. But the Costzon Ride On Push Car is the perfect marriage of a push car and a powered ride on. Perfect for your little one to grow into.

Why It’s So Great

The price of this vehicle is completely justified by the fact that it has 3 different ways to use it, from 9 months up until 3 years or when your child is too big to use it!

You can start by using it as a type of stroller. The large push handle on the back and the lockable front wheels mean that you are in control. The sides arms fully enclose and keep your little one upright. As long as baby can sit up on their own and hold on tight, they’ll love the openness and freedom of this car.

Next, you can use it as a walking car. It’s basically the same thing, but your child can be more involved and use all the features. This thing has an Mp3 player jack, a USB flash drive, and an LCD display screen. There are also built-in songs they can play that are kid’s songs. Oh, and it has working headlights. Pretty sure it’s nicer than my own car radio.

Finally, when your child is coordinated and kind-of trustworthy (closer to age two, but more as they grow towards age three), you can let them move this car on their own. It has a 6V battery and can go up to a couple miles per hour. The accelerator is on the retractable foot rests, so you can hide this feature until your kid can handle it.

Costzon Ride On Push Car, 3 in 1 Licensed Pagani 6V Electric Battery Powered Toddler Play Toy Car w/ Handle Lights, Music, MP3, Aux Plug in, Push Round Buggy (Red)

Technical Information

  • Dimensions: 36 x 15 x 33 inches
  • Item Weight:  15 pounds
  • Recommended Age:  18-35 months
  • Is Assembly Required?: Yes

Possible Issues

  • The built-in songs suck. They sound like robots being forced to read children’s songs aloud.
  • It is NOISY. Between the crunch of the wheels, the sounds, and the engine, this thing does not go quietly down the street.
  • The push handle isn’t the sturdiest thing you’ll ever encounter, but it’s at a good height for most people to not have to bend to push.

Skip Hop Kids 3-in-1 Walker & Ride On Scooter Wagon Toy

Skip Hop Kids 3-in-1 Baby Activity Walker & Ride On Scooter Wagon Toy, Dog

A cute toy that grows with your child and is durable enough to actually survive the adventure? The Skip Hop Kids 3-in-1 Baby Activity Walker & Ride On Scooter Wagon Toy is that ride-on toy! It goes from wagon walker to ride on toy to scooter for several years of play and fun.

Why It’s So Great

The first stage is the walker toy. The handlebars are reversed and the orange bucket piece is flipped so that your baby can put their favorite toys in there. Taking pals and favorite toys with them is great motivation to get babies to walk!

The second stage is the actual ride-on toy. The handlebars get flipped back around so that baby can use them to guide the ride-on around. The orange bucket just flips and clicks into place so that baby has the perfect spot to sit on.

The third stage is a big kid scooter. The orange bucket gets booted completely so that your kiddo can stand on the platform and cruise around. The handlebar is adjustable so that it’s just the right height for your child. It makes the perfect first scooter for your active toddler.

On the front, there is a little button that makes sounds and has a headlight. Your little one will get a huge kick out of pushing the button to make the horn sound as they scoot around the house.

Skip Hop Kids 3-in-1 Baby Activity Walker & Ride On Scooter Wagon Toy, Dog

Technical Information

  • Dimensions: 22.75 x 13.5 x 20.5 inches
  • Item Weight:  5.4 pounds
  • Recommended Age: walking up to 3 years
  • Is Assembly Required?:  Yes

Possible Issues

  • It’s hard to push from the front and the handlebars don’t turn, so little walkers can fall and go boom.
  • The lightweight design means that this ride-on tips over easily if there isn’t any weight in or on it.
  • Requires assembly and batteries. Not hard, but it does take extra time and money!

XJD Baby Balance Bike

XJD Baby Balance Bikes Bicycle Baby Toys for 1 Year Old Boy Girl 10 Month -24 Months Toddler Bike Infant No Pedal 4 Wheels First Bike or Birthday Gift Children Walker, Blue

Every child needs a tricycle at some point. The XJD Baby Balance Bike is perfect- your tiny toddler can just hop on and scoot around to their heart’s content.

Why It’s So Great

This tricycle works really well for helping your child build their leg muscles. This helps out a lot when they are first learning to walk and run and jump around.

Your child can use this trike from 10 months all the way up to 2 years old.

The body of the bike is made from carbon steel for durability. The wheels and handlebars are both made from EVA plastic, which is soft to touch and great for littles. The seat is soft too and it is made from PU plastic.

All of these materials meet the CPSC requirements. They are 100% safe for your child to play with! If you or your kiddo don’t like it, you can return it within 30 days for a full refund.

The handlebar only turns 45 degrees either way, and the trike won’t go more than 135 degrees when turning so that baby won’t tip it over. I like that safety concerned design.

Technical Information

  • Dimensions:  17.6 x 10.1 x 7.7 inches
  • Item Weight:  5 pounds
  • Recommended Age:  10 months-2 years
  • Is Assembly Required?:  Yes

Possible Issues

  • This is on the expensive end of the spectrum for a 1-year-old ride on.
  • The tricycle doesn’t have any adjustability features, meaning that when your baby outgrows it, it’s done for.
  • Some parents might not like the fact that this isn’t a name brand product, so the overall quality of it is questionable.

Little Tikes Princess Horse & Carriage

Little Tikes Princess Horse & Carriage

Best Ride-On Toy for Girls

I had to create a category just so that I could mention the Little Tikes Princess Horse & Carriage. If your little one loves princesses, they need this ride!

Why It’s So Great

Your little one can be just like a princess by riding in this fabulous horse-drawn carriage. If your child is unable to move the carriage, a parent can guide the horse by the reins or push from the back.

There is also a floor board that fits inside so you can be sure your little one’s feet will be safe when you’re on the go. Once your little one is big enough, you can remove the floor board and let them use their feet to move the carriage.

The Little Tikes Princess Horse & Carriage is on four Easy-Riding wheels that allow for 360 degree turning. This makes it easier for either you or your little one to navigate.

The carriage also includes two cup holders (one for you and one for your little one), a parent console on the roof of the carriage, and a small trunk for any other necessities for the ride.

Additionally, the horse makes clopping sounds as the carriage moves and there is a door for your little one to get in and out with ease.

Technical Information

  • Dimensions:  20 x 43.5 x 37.8 inches
  • Item Weight:  11 pounds
  • Maximum Child Weight:  50 pounds
  • Recommended Age:  18 months-5 years
  • Is Assembly Required?:  Yes

Possible Issues

  • Any time you have to assemble something yourself, you run the risk that parts may be missing or stickers might be in the wrong places.
  • The horse doesn’t come off. So it’s you with a horse and carriage for as long as you have this ride-on toy.
  • This is primarily an outside toy because it’s just too big and bulky to be used indoors.
  • Compared to other ride-on toys, this one is quite pricey.

YBike Pewi Walking Ride-On Toy

Pewi Walking Ride On Toy - Toddler Walker for Ages 9 Months to 3 Years Old, Red

This looks like an abstract sculpture of some kind, but the Pewi Walking Ride On Toy is actually highly-rated walking and scooting toy for young toddlers. Your child can stand and push or sit and scoot in any direction.

Why It’s So Great

This walking buddy is great for both indoor and outdoor play. It has 4 caster wheels that allow the Pewi to easily move in any direction. Your baby will love to use this for riding or pushing.

This award-winning ride on toy has an aluminum frame with plastic accent pieces for durability. The seat has a soft foam pad for comfortable sitting.

The strange design helps your child keep their legs free of the legs and wheels as they scoot along. The front handle has a cute smiley face and lots of places for little hands to grip as they walk, scoot, or get pushed around the house.

The wheels and other parts are non-marking, so they won’t tear up your house as they learn balance and coordination.

This works for babies from 9 months (or the cruising age) up to 3 years old or 44 pounds, whichever happens first!

Technical Information

  • Dimensions: 9.3 x 6.8 x 7 inches
  • Item Weight:  4 pounds
  • Recommended Age: 9 months-3 years
  • Is Assembly Required?:  Yes

Possible Issues

  • This can be prone to tipping, and since it sits up higher, kids can fall hard and become injured.
  • The wheels are prone to stiffening up or locking unexpectedly.
  • Plastic screw covers don’t stay put.

FAQs for Ride-On Toys for 1-Year-Olds

When can a baby use a ride-on toy?

We would recommend that you only use a ride-on toy for a baby when it’s safe to do so. That means that baby is coordinated enough to stay sitting up and hold on to the toy while it is moving.

For example, a 9-month-old can probably sit up and hold on to the handlebars, but they’ll topple over when it moves because they don’t’ have the required strength to hold on. At 12 to 15 months, your baby probably will start to develop the needed skills to use a ride-on toy. The best ride on toys for a 1 year old at this age are the ones where baby can sit and just scoot himself around.

Between 18 and 24 months is a great time for a baby to get a more advanced ride-on toy. We wouldn’t recommend a motorized ride-on toy before this age.

Can 1-year-olds learn to ride a bike?

Yes and no. Your 1-year-old is not going to be peddling around the driveway on his trike anytime soon. It’s not impossible, but it’s not very likely, either!

On the other hand, if you get your baby a banana bike or balance bike, they can learn how to sit and scoot around on a bike without falling. There’s a huge coordination leap that happens between one and two, and learning to balance and “ride” a bike happens more easily the older the baby gets.

Do 1-year-olds know how to steer a bike or ride-on toy?

When an adult sees a steering wheel or a set of handlebars, we immediately know what it is and what to do. Babies are more like “Hey look, a cool wheel! I’m gonna turn it around and around!” or “Those handlebars move, so I better wiggle them a lot just to see how they work.”

A younger 1-year-old won’t know how to steer. So don’t be surprised if you put your baby on a ride-on toy or push toy and they just keep smashing into things. But as baby grows, you can show them the cause and effect of steering and how to turn the vehicle to where they want it to go.

How fast should a ride on for one year olds go?

At most, a riding toy for a 1-year-old should go 3mph. Anything over that is just asking for trouble! Ideally, stick to the 1mph or 2mph range to get a toy that moves enough to be fun without being dangerous.

My Recommendation

You just can’t beat the classics!

At our house, the Fisher-Price Little People Music Parade Ride-On and the Little Tikes Cozy Coupe 30th Anniversary Car are the top choices for ride-on toys.

Remember, your ride-on toy for your one-year-old doesn’t have to be expensive or particularly inventive–it just has to be fun!
