The TOMOLOO Hoverboard is a customer favorite! Grandparents and parents alike can’t stop singing their praises of the Tomoloo hoverboard. It’s a popular Christmas or birthday gift and the recipients are always thrilled! One parent calls this a “purchase you can feel good about,” thanks to the product’s safety features. For one, the battery has overcharge protection to avoid overheating.

The body of the board is made from durable flame-resistant plastic. It’s incredibly safe; this board is UL2272 Certified of hoverboard and passes requirements for MSDS/UN38.3 and UL2271. The wheels are solid rubber and guaranteed to not pop, but it doesn’t promise any gentleness on your floors. Customers found it did sometimes cause skidmarks on hardwood floors. Thankfully, they were easy to wipe clean.

Of course, there is a dedicated smartphone app. With the app, you can change the light colors, check battery status, and see the distance traveled. A phone can also connect to the board via Bluetooth for your child’s very own light and dance party.

The Hover-1 Drive Hoverboard is a sleek hoverboard option. I love the look of this matte black hoverboard for kids with its futuristic LED headlights. But does its performance match its appearance? It does more than look good. The exterior of this board is high-quality and durable. This board will withstand and last.

The battery takes anywhere from 4.5 to 6.5 hours to charge. That’s a bit of a long wait time, but once the battery is fully charged, you can expect to ride 3 miles without needing a recharge. Customers are quick in reviews to point out that this board is not made for all terrains. It doesn’t handle rough surfaces well, so keep this board on smooth sidewalks and pavement.

All-Terrain Off Road Hoverboard

The All Terrain Off Road Hoverboard is an intense all-terrain hoverboard ready for anything and everything! On some “best of” lists, there is often a “budget” item and a “splurge” item. We will call this our splurge hoverboard.

Yes, it’s pricier than the other options on this list, but it isn’t an unwarranted cost. This is a luxury SUV in the hoverboard universe. I do realize that in photos, this hoverboard looks pretty big, but don’t be fooled. This hoverboard for kids has 8.5″ wheels, which does make it a little on the large size but that also makes it more sturdy.

Speaking of those wheels, they are all-terrain tires. This board isn’t limited to paved sidewalks. It can handle grass, gravel, and more. As your child cruises all the terrains, they’ll be gliding along with lights in the front and the back but sadly not on the wheels.

Swagtron Hoverboard

Swagtron Swagboard Twist 3 Self Balancing Hoverboard for Kids Multicolor LED Wheels and LiFePo Battery Technology, Blue

Popularity

The Swagtron Hoverboard is an awesome hoverboard for beginners and expert boarders alike! Swagtron is a popular name in the hoverboard game. They churn out high-quality boards that just look so sleek and people can’t get enough. Swagtron markets this board as the perfect way for kids to express their personalities. “After all, what’s the point of having flair without the flash,” as their promotional material says.

This board does have a non-lithium battery, which is important to a lot of parents due to the fire potential of lithium batteries. Along with the user-friendly battery, this board meets all UL requirements, including rigorous battery charging tests. Plus, this board is full of indicators. Movement indicators, or as we adults call them “turn signals” tell pediatricians what’s up. There are always light indicators for system issues and battery power.

This 22-pound is easy for kids to carry around. This is thanks to the body being made of an impact-resistant ABS polymer. This polymer can handle a rider of 200 pounds. It may be light, but the 250-watt dual motors are not light on power. They reach a max speed of 7 miles per hour and can handle 30-degree hills.

This Swagtron model comes in three different wheel styles, so be sure to check them out. For a cheaper option, minus the LED lights, head back to entry one on this list.

PROS

  • Meets rigorous safety standards
  • High weight capacity

CONS

  • No Bluetooth speakers

CHO Spider Hoverboard

The CHO Spider Hoverboard is an ideal hoverboard for young beginners! Has your 6- or 7-year-old been watching enviously as their older siblings play with their hoverboards? Maybe she’s been too young to ride one up until recently. Now that she’s bigger, you’re thinking it’s time for a board of her own.

I recommend this for younger kids because it’s not quite as high as typical hoverboards. Also, it has a carrying handle! Since carrying 20 or so pounds can be harder when you’re little, a handle is a big help. It’s also safe to use. The self-balancing feature makes it easy to learn to operate. Plus, it has thick non-slip footpads for preventing slips and falls.

The CHO Spider wheels board does have fun LED-laden wheels and a blue headlight for illuminating the road ahead. It also has an easy-to-understand battery indicator lighter. Don’t worry, your younger one won’t be left tune-less. Of course, this board is Bluetooth-supported! Be sure to teach them to connect to their Bluetooth device.

Even though I suggest this board for the younger ones, it certainly doesn’t have to be just for them. This board has a minimum weight requirement of 45 pounds and a maximum of 220 pounds!

PROS

  • Ideal for beginners
  • High weight capacity
  • Has a carrying handle

CONS

  • Doesn’t include carrying bag

The Swagtron Swagboard Hoverboard may appear simple, but it’s anything but. The Swagtron Swagboard is not the flashiest board featured, which isn’t always a bad thing. This no-frills board has dual 250W motors and startup balancing. You don’t have to Google that – basically, it just means the board will balance itself when it is turned on. It’s “ready when you are.”

If the scary stories of lithium-ion batteries in early hoverboards still have you spooked, rest easy because this board is lithium-free. The battery is also protected by SentryShield quantum technology. The product description claims a battery charge time of 5.5 hours, but most customers find charging time to be faster and around 3 hours. Meanwhile, you can expect to get around an hour of ride time after your 3-hour charge. On average, that’s about a distance of 5 miles.

This board can hit 7 miles per hour and handle 30-degree hills. If your child hits a bigger hill than that, they can carry this lightweight board with ease. It only weighs 22 pounds.

You’ll appreciate the color-coded charging light that signals how close the battery is needing a charge. You might also like that it has a maximum weight limit of 155 pounds! If you like the feel of this board, but want something with more flash, jump down a few more entries for the lighted version!

The UNI-SUN Hoverboard is a hoverboard made to stand out from the crowd! I’ll let you in on a secret: this is the coolest-looking board on this entire list. You will have to explore the different color styles.

UNI-SUN offers this board in 3 different series: chrome, pure color, and funny. The “funny” label is a bit off-putting but you should try to disregard that. The pure color styles are exactly as they sound: solid colors. Solid color, solid choice! The chrome series features a board encased in reflective chrome.

The funny series has hoverboards for kids in unique patterned designs. I bet your kid doesn’t want the “same thing” as everyone else, right? Enter the funny series. It includes graffiti prints, skull patterns, and more. This is the stand-out hoverboard your kid wants.

Comparing Hoverboards for Kids

The table below compares only the recommended products on this page. A low or high Price means it is low or high compared to the other products listed. The Quality Score is our assessment of the overall performance and satisfaction with the product compared to others in the table.

Hoverboards For Kids Buying Criteria

UL 2272 Certification

Remember in 2015 and 2016 when the news was flooded with reports of hoverboards catching on fire? In fact, in 2016, half a million hoverboards were recalled due to fire risk.

Understandably, you don’t want your child riding around on a board that could potentially burst into flames. Luckily, one certification can help you distinguish between dangerous products and safe ones.

UL 2272 certification signifies that the board’s electrical system has been deemed safe and not a fire risk. Most hoverboards on the market do carry this certification now. Still, if you happen across one that lacks it, certainly do not “add to cart.”

Materials

The UL 2272 certification and the materials go hand-in-hand. In order to receive that UL 2272 certification, hoverboards for kids need to be made of some tough materials.

Those 2016 hoverboard fires originated in the batteries. The flames started while the board was charging and subsequently overheated.

Before we continue, go plug in your smartphone for a while and then touch it and check the temperature. When items are being charged, they tend to generate heat. It’s because of this that experts recommend we don’t leave our phones on a bed or other flammable surfaces while it charges.

Hoverboards were suffering a similar issue and, as a result, some seriously bad PR. UL certification was introduced and hoverboard designs had to become safer.

Look for durable hoverboards for kids that are made of heat-resistant plastics and metals. Likewise, look for boards with safely contained battery compartments.

Wheel Size

Hoverboards are classified by their wheel size. They come in 4 different wheel sizes:

  • 4.5″
  • 6.5″
  • 8″
  • 10″

The larger the wheel, the more difficult it is to ride. However, larger wheels can typically handle rougher terrains better.

Meanwhile, smaller wheeled hoverboards should stick to smooth surfaces. On the other hand, you can perform tricks with smaller wheels. Plus, it makes the hoverboard much easier to carry!

In hoverboards for kids, 4.5″ or 6.5″ wheels are the best options. In general, boards with smaller wheels are easier to operate and maneuver. If possible, see if your child can borrow a friend’s hoverboard to see how well they operate different sizes.

Hoverboard Weight

Back in the day, as we rode our bicycles, if we got too tired or a hill got too steep, we could simply push our bike along beside us.

Hoverboards for kids aren’t really equipped to be pushed like a bicycle. Because of this, if a hill is too steep, or the terrain is too rough, or if the battery just dies, the hoverboard will have to be carried.

With this in mind, check out the product dimensions of the hoverboards you look at. Most hoverboards are between 20 and 30 pounds. How many pounds is your child able to carry?

(Don’t worry, Mom, we know YOU can lift 20 to 30 pounds. When did these kids get so heavy??)

Weight Limitations

All hoverboards have weight and height restrictions. I imagine hoverboards for kids have weight limits to deter parents from trying!

The average maximum weight for hoverboards tends to hover around 120 pounds. If your child weighs more than that, you’ll have to find one with a higher weight restriction.

The same goes if you or dad would want to try the board. Make sure you fall into the weight limitations! Most hoverboard limits are based on wheel size.

As you’ll find in your search, a good number of hoverboards manufactured today have high weight capacities, so you can rest assured that the board you buy can handle a child or an adult.

Battery Life

Can you guess the biggest complaint in customer reviews of hoverboards? Battery life. As it turns out, hoverboards take a lot of juice to run!

Many parents find themselves disappointed by batteries dying right in the middle of the fun.

Not all hoverboards are made alike, though! Fast charging hoverboards pull out ahead in this race.

Wanna know what boards are up and running quickly? Check out the pros and cons listed for the items above!

Along with battery life, there’s another battery factor to consider.

Battery Charging Time

Exactly how long does it take to charge up that hoverboard’s battery? Does it take less than an hour or is it an all-night kind of deal?

It can be a bit of a trade-off. Long charging times can be forgiven for long battery lives. After all, charging throughout the night isn’t bad if you get plenty of fun with the board the next day.

Go with a hoverboard with a battery charging time you and your child can work with!

Speed

Speeds on hoverboards vary. Most fall in the range of 5 to 8 miles per hour. The high-end all-terrain versions can reach up to 10 miles per hour.

When compared to a car, that seems downright glacial. It really isn’t though, when you are standing upright and trying to keep your balance!

For children, stick with lower-speed hoverboards. Luckily, hoverboards for kids tend to stick in that range.

If your child is new to hoverboarding, consider purchasing a board with a learning mode. This mode puts a cap on how fast the board will go as the rider masters balancing.

Designs and Colors

Let’s face it, hoverboards look cool. That’s why everyone wants one! Sure, zooming around on a self-balancing scooter is awesome, but kids like just how stinking cool they look.

For this list, and for your kid, be on the lookout for fun colors and designs. Sure, you could settle for a plain white hoverboard. White has a futuristic vibe, after all.

But your kid will probably absolutely adore a teal, hot pink, or even patterned hoverboard. They don’t want the same hoverboard all their friends have. They want to stand out!

Most of the entries on this list come in several different color options. Once you pick a board that fits your requirements, be sure to click through the colors!

Believe it or not, hoverboards have been outlawed in some areas. If you’re scratching your head at that, it’s because, in busier urban areas, hoverboards can be a nuisance in crowded public areas. Because of this, regulations were set.

If you live in Britain, don’t expect to ride a hoverboard on public surfaces like sidewalks or roadways. In 2015, they were banned from public areas.

Hoverboards are only allowed to be used on private property. If you decide to risk it and ride your hoverboard out in public, you could be facing a fine.

What about in the United States? There are hoverboard bans there too. In New York City, they are banned, mostly since they can’t be registered like motor vehicles can be.

On the other coast in the U.S., you can have a hoverboard under certain conditions. In California, it’s only legal to ride these boards if you’re 16 years or older and you must always wear a helmet while riding.

If you aren’t sure about the regulations in your area, it would be best to check in with your local authorities before laying down money on a hoverboard!

Price

A hoverboard isn’t a cheap purchase. You should expect to pay a couple of hundred dollars for one. The lowest price point for hoverboards is, on average, around $100. However, some hoverboards can set you back over $700!

It may be tempting to search for a bargain hoverboard, but I wouldn’t recommend this. There are a lot of safety concerns with hoverboards that will only be worse in a cheap version. Whatever hoverboard you purchase needs to be sturdy, dependable, and safe.

Still, that doesn’t mean you have to commit to a nearly $1,000 hoverboard. On this list, the hoverboards range from $100 to $300 and meet all safety standards.

Fun Additional Features

The list of extra features you can get on hoverboards for kids is seemingly endless. Consider how your child will use the hoverboard. This will determine what kind of factors are must-haves.

Here are the most popular features:

  • LED lights – These lights are usually found in fun flashing designs on the wheels, but some boards also have bright LED headlights for safety.
  • Bluetooth speakers – Got a music buff in the family? Bluetooth enables your child to play their favorite music through the hoverboard’s speakers for hands-off listening.
  • Smartphone apps – Hey, it’s 2022. Of course, some hoverboards can be controlled by your smartphone. What else did you expect?
  • Learning modes – This special programming helps monitor the speed of beginning riders. It can alert via vibrations or sound if the board’s speed reaches unsafe levels.

FAQs – Hoverboards For Kids

How much are hoverboards?

When it comes to quality hoverboards for kids, expect to pay between $100-$200 on average. If you’re going for a super-deluxe overboard, don’t be surprised to see prices over $200.

How do hoverboards for kids work?

Good question! Really, it’s a product that doesn’t seem like it should work, and yet it does. Your kid probably won’t ask you how it works, because he or she knows everything. But in case they do, let’s give you the answer!

Hoverboards for kids, or anyone, are also known as self-balancing scooters. I’m sure you’re familiar with scooters, and they certainly aren’t self-balancing. So what keeps a hoverboard upright?

If you would open up a hoverboard, you’d see two distinct pieces connected by a pivoting axis. Each piece has a sensor that detects angles and tilts.

These sensors register when the rider leans forward or backward. They also detect when the feet slightly press down, indicating the rider’s desire to turn.

Hoverboards also have gyroscopes inside. They’re fed information from those sensors. The sensors can tell the rider is leaning ever-so-slightly forward and the gyroscope compensates for this and balances the board.

Meanwhile, the two motors that control the whole operation are found within the wheels. Yes, the wheels! Don’t let your kids bang those wheels up too much!

This is a very basic description, just enough to explain to your kids if they ask. Still, if you want to know more, click here to learn everything you’d ever want to know.

What are the benefits of hoverboards for kids?

There are benefits to riding a kids hoverboard beyond looking really cool. It may look like just standing on something, but it is secretly a form of exercise.

Make no mistake; it’s not the same as bike riding or skateboarding. Hoverboards aren’t calories torchers. After all, it’s a fancy way to avoid walking!

Nonetheless, actively balancing on a kids hoverboard requires some core strength. In fact, one doctor mentioned that those with low core strength are more likely to fall off hoverboards (so, basically, I shouldn’t step on one!).

Beyond using core muscles, users also report sore calf muscles after prolonged hoverboard use.

A hoverboard for kids won’t turn your child into an athlete, but it is definitely a step above sitting on a couch!

Plus, it gets them outdoors! They may be gliding on a hoverboard, but they’re in the sun, soaking up healthy vitamin D.

What age range are hoverboards for kids intended for?

Manufacturers differ widely on this subject. One manufacturer will claim their board is great for all ages. Another will recommend only 6-year-olds and up should ride. Yet another will stamp “not intended for younger than 13 years old” on their packaging.

So, which manufacturer is correct? Honestly, none of them… and all of them. There is no true “right” age. If your area doesn’t have a legal age restriction, how do you how old is old enough?

Like most things in life, this is an issue that comes down to your decision as a parent. It’s really up to you when you think your child is ready for a hoverboard.

I’ve seen children as young as 3 years old riding hoverboards. Now, for several reasons, I wouldn’t recommend that, but no one will stop you from letting your little one step on a hoverboard.

The best way to reduce injury to a child of any age? Adult supervision. As an adult, if you’re nearby, you can monitor speed and prevent accidents.

Do you have to wear a helmet on a hoverboard?

Yes, helmets should be worn by hoverboard riders. In a lot of areas, helmet use is the law. Still, if you leave in a state or city that doesn’t require helmets, it’s best to wear one anyway.

Why should children (and adults!) hover while helmeted? Accidents happen, especially on devices that require balance! Even advanced riders can fall and they’ll want their heads protected.

Hoverboards don’t require any special protective gear and as of now, such specialty gear doesn’t exist. Normal bicycle or skateboard helmets will protect a noggin just fine!

For kids on the younger side, you may even want to outfit them in elbow pads and knee pads; 40% of hoverboard accidents lead to fractures!

Are hoverboards for kids dangerous?

As with most things, hoverboards for kids are as safe as you make them. There have been reports of thousands of injuries due to hoverboards. However, there are thousands of bicycle injuries a year too.

Very young children shouldn’t ride hoverboards. Only those 6 years or older should use hoverboards for kids.

Oh, and to all the parents who get curious and want to try the hoverboard: it’s considered a big no-no to operate a hoverboard under the influence!

Riders should always wear a helmet and protective gear. Children should not be left unsupervised on a hoverboard. Hoverboards can be a safe and fun time if everyone involved follows basic safety guidelines!
