UL 2272 certification signifies that the board’s electrical system has been deemed safe and not a fire risk. Most hoverboards on the market do carry this certification now. Still, if you happen across one that lacks it, certainly do not “add to cart.”
Materials
The UL 2272 certification and the materials go hand-in-hand. In order to receive that UL 2272 certification, hoverboards for kids need to be made of some tough materials.
Those 2016 hoverboard fires originated in the batteries. The flames started while the board was charging and subsequently overheated.

Why should children (and adults!) hover while helmeted? Accidents happen, especially on devices that require balance! Even advanced riders can fall and they’ll want their heads protected.
Hoverboards don’t require any special protective gear and as of now, such specialty gear doesn’t exist. Normal bicycle or skateboard helmets will protect a noggin just fine!
For kids on the younger side, you may even want to outfit them in elbow pads and knee pads; 40% of hoverboard accidents lead to fractures!
