Joovy Coo Portable Bassinet Playpen Review

Portable, compact, and safe.

Those are the three best words to describe the Joovy Coo Portable Bassinet.

Though it has a few convenience features like a storage area and a rocking function, it is a no-frills model that gets the job done. It is convertible from a bassinet to a playpen, so you will definitely get your money’s worth!

Keep reading to find out what makes the Joovy Coo bassinet such a great choice.

JOOVY Coo Portable Bassinet Playpen, White

Though this is a little pricier than some other playpen models, it is a piece of furniture you can count on to grow with your child.

Starting from birth, this playard can be used in bassinet mode until your baby is 15 pounds (or pushing up using their hands and knees).

Then, simply unzip the divider and transfer the mattress to the bottom of the playard. Now, it is ready to be used until your toddler is 35.

In addition to a long use because of its ability to grow with your little one, this Joovy portable bassinet comes with a 2-year warranty guarantee. Since most toddlers reach 35 between 18 and 24 months, the playard is protected for the entire time you will use it.

Another major function of this model is its portability.

Unlike traditional playards that are designed bulky and may not come with a mattress, the Joovy Coo is designed compact. The entire bassinet folds around the mattress and transforms into a carrying bag in just two easy steps.

It weighs just 18 pounds, making it very lightweight! When folded, it is completely flat, which is perfect for travel or storage.

This portable bassinet also works well for families who live in apartments or share rooms, since it has a compact design that is much smaller than the average playpen.

When you are ready to put it up, the pop-up design makes set-up a breeze.

Finally, this offers plenty of built-in storage.

While you will need to remove any items when the playard is folded up and not in use, the side panel unzips to reveal a roomy storage area. It’s perfect for blankets, diapers and wipes, extra clothes, and more!

This makes it the perfect travel companion since you can set up and be sure your little one is comfortable anywhere.

This bassinet is designed to have a compact, sleek build. It is smaller than a crib but offers the same comforts because of the included mattress. This makes it perfect for parents who want to co-sleep.

There is also no struggle of taking apart a crib once your little one is ready to move into their own room. Just fold up the bassinet/playard and take it where it needs to go.

You can also keep a close eye on your little one since the outside of the playpen is made using mesh. The mesh is breathable to prevent suffocation and almost completely see-through.

The Mattress

The mattress of the Joovy Coo is designed safe for newborn use. It is free of harsh chemicals and woven using breathable fibers to reduce the risk of suffocation.

As an added benefit, the Coo has a mattress cover that can easily be removed and washed if your child makes a mess. It is designed durable, so you will not experience frayed edges or wear as a result of putting it in the washer.

Other Useful Features

Another cool feature of the design is the rocking rodjust flip it over and you can rock your little one to sleep.

This makes it perfect for taking your child to visit friends and family since you’ll be confident they can sleep in safety and comfort regardless of where they are. You also don’t have to worry about cluttering up their living space.

Additional Considerations

Even though the Joovy Coo is free of any dangerous chemicals, however, there is still a slight chemical smell when you open it for the first time.

The mattress cover is polyester, so the odor is most likely coming from the polyurethane mattress. You may want to buy it and air it out for a day or two before you let your little one use it for the first time. It also couldn’t hurt to give the cover a preliminary wash before use.

Even though this playpen is advertised as having storage, the storage is located under the bassinet portion. The same storage is not accessible once your little one moves to the next stage.

Finally, something to note is this isn’t the best option if you are looking for something bright and engaging for your child. The only two colors currently available are grey or white.

Something to keep in mind is that white might not be the best color choice if you are trying to avoid staining! It looks elegant, but it won’t once your child is done with it. Even though the mattress cover can be thrown in the wash, the outside of the playpen might not come clean as easily. Grey might be a better option.

What if the Joovy Coo Isn’t For Me?

Some parents don’t like the price tag of the Joovy Coo, while others might not be ready to commit to such a no-frills’ model. Here are a few other bassinet/playard combos that might be worth your consideration:

Chicco FastAsleep Playard

4moms Breeze Plus Portable playard with Removable Bassinet and Changing Station - Easy one Push Open, one Pull Close, from The Makers of The mamaRoo

The Chicco FastAleep Playard offers many similar features as the Joovy Coo. However, the napper and changing area is an extra piece, which means it is not compact as Joovy’s model. It is significantly more affordable and also includes features like a compact fold, lightweight, sleek design, washable fabrics, and snap-open setup. However, it is missing bonus features like the storage area and rocking function when in bassinet mode.

4moms Breeze Plus Portable Playard

4moms Breeze Plus Portable playard with Removable Bassinet and Changing Station - Easy one Push Open, one Pull Close, from The Makers of The mamaRoo

The Breeze Plus Portable Playard is on the higher end of the price spectrum. Its major feature is the setup and take-downwhich is a breeze’. You can use a single hand to open or close this playard. It also comes with an included bassinet and changing table setup. While the materials are not machine washable, they are easy to clean. Additionally, while an included carrying bag makes it easy to haul this around, it weighs 5 pounds more than the Joovy Coo.

Graco Pack n Play on the Go Playard

Graco Pack 'n Play On the Go Playard, Twister

While the Graco Pack n Play on the Go Playard does not fold flat like some of the other space-saving models mentioned, it is comparable in weight, weighing 23 pounds. It includes features like wipe-clean fabrics, an included bassinet/changing table combo, and wheels that make moving the playard around easier. One downside is the mattress’, which is less of a mattress and more of a hard board that provides support for your little one.

Costzon Playard

Costzon Baby Playard, 3 in 1 Convertible Playpen with Bassinet, Travel Bassinet Bed, Foldable Bassinet Bed with Hanging Toys, Music Box, Wheels & Brake, Large Capacity Basket, Oxford Carry Bag(Gray)

The Costzon Playard is another affordable option, this one being loaded with bonus features. It has a bassinet/changing table attachment and weighs just 21.5 pounds. It is a little more difficult to fold and set up than the other options, but its wheels make it easy to move around the room. The mattress included is thin, which may not be a good choice if your little one naps away from home a lot. Among the many bonus features include toys, an engaging design, and a music box. It also has functional features including a large storage pouch attached to the side of the playard and braking wheels.

Evenflo Portable BabySuite Deluxe

Evenflo Portable BabySuite Deluxe, Spearmint Spree

The Evenflo Portable BabySuite Deluxe has a low price point but plenty of features. It comes with a changer that rotates to the side when not in use and a bassinet function with light-blocking panels that will help your little one get solid rest. Some other features include a dual-pocket storage area on the outside, a toy bar, and wheels. This folds up semi-compact, but it can be difficult to get it inside the carrying case, which is made out of the playpen mat. One bonus is the vibrant design of the five different colors available.

Final Take

The Joovy Coo Portable Bassinet is ideal for parents looking for something portable, compact, and safe for their little one.

It’s small size, easy set-up and tear down, and portability makes it useful for newborns, and up until your child is 35 tall. The storage area and rocking function are perfect for when your child is young, while the portability and compact size make this playard ideal for family visits and playdates.

While it is not for everyone, the Joovy Coo meets the needs of many families. And, if it is not for you, there are plenty of other pack n plays for children of all ages.
