Evenflo’s Tribute LX Convertible Car Seat Review

Evenflo’s Tribute LX Convertible Car Seat: My Review after a Thorough Look

by Pamela Halstead |

It can be stressful to pick out a car seat to fit your needs and your child’s needs. From a newborn seat, to a convertible, to a booster, there are many options along the way. The Evenflo Tribute LX is a convertible car seat that can be used as both a rear-facing and forward-facing car seat, giving you a bigger range in which you can use it. It is an inexpensive option, but does it have all of the bells an whistles you need?

Key Features

Height and Weight Limitations

The Evenflo Tribute LX Convertible Car Seat has the following weight/height ranges:

  • Rear facing infants: 5-30 pounds, 19-37 inches
  • Forward facing toddlers: 22-40 pounds, 28-40 inches

The Tribute LX has 4 shoulder strap positions, 2 crotch buckle positions, and a 5 point harness, making it super adjustable to last you through several stages of your child’s car seat needs.

Compact

Evenflo’s Tribute LX is more compact than many other convertible car seats. This allows it to fit better in small cars and airplane seats. We all know airplane seats are small enough without having to sit next to a bulky car seat – this takes that issue out of the equation altogether.

The compactness of the Tribute is nice if you have a small car with a tight back seat. Because it is so slim, it is easier to install, and won’t take up as much precious space as a bulkier car seat.

Lightweight

One of the main features of this product is that it is lightweight. At just 12 pounds, it can be easily carried through an airport or on other public transportation. The lightweight design of the Tribute LX makes it a breeze to transport back and forth between cars. My son currently has a car seat that weighs over 30 pounds – I can barely carry it between cars, there is no way I would lug it through an airport! Because the Tribute LX is so light, it is truly an ideal product for anyone traveling with an infant or toddler.

Removable cup holder

The Tribute LX comes with a removable cup holder that can be attached to the side of the arm rest. This is a nice feature for when your little one is a bit older. I have found that cup holders are used as toy holders, snack holders, and for everything else that might fit in there. Even if your child doesn’t use it as a drink holder, they will put it to good use one way or another!

Machine washable pads

It is so important to have an easily washable exterior on your car seat. It is even better when you can just pop the pads into the washing machine to do the work for you! This is a must for me with anything that my son will be sitting it, so I love that the Tribute LX offers this feature. Because all moms know that at some point, something is going to get spilled on your car seat!

Looks

The Evenflo Tribute comes in 5 vibrant colors. It has a nice sleek look to it – nothing too flashy – and I really like its simple, slim design.

Inexpensive

The Tribute LX Convertible car seat is surprisingly inexpensive, considering it does feel like a quality seat. At its low price, I could even justify buying it solely as a traveling car seat if you find yourself taking planes frequently. It may also be worth checking out this seat if you are looking for a cheap backup seat, or one to keep at a babysitter’s house.

Concerns

Unfortunately, even though there are plenty of reasons to purchase this car seat, there are some things you should keep in mind.

No cloth guards

I have found that car seat straps, just like regular seat belts, tend to dig into skin. This is especially true with car seats since you need to tighten the straps for a snug fit. Many car seats offer cloth guards on the straps, but the Evenflo Tribute does not. The lack of this protection can cause irritation around your little one’s neck. You can buy guards separately, but that does mean spending a little more for something that, in my opinion, should be included in the first place.

Sharp plastic edges

The plastic edges on the sides and the bottom of the Tribute LX are unusually sharp. I have run into this problem on products before, where it seems the plastic should have been better rounded, but usually baby products are pretty good about not allowing this to happen. I would also be concerned with putting this car seat in a car with leather seats, because the plastic may cut into the seat.

The harness release button (the button you push to loosen the harness straps) is placed right below some plastic that has a sharp edge, so you need to be careful when trying to push this button. It’s not going to slice your finger off, but it may give you a little paper (or plastic!) cut.

Recline adjustment isn’t sufficient

When installing a car seat, you need to set it to a sufficient recline in order for maximum safety. All car seats these days have some sort of indicator on the car seat itself to ensure the car seat is at the correct level. I’ve seen car seats with actual levels in the base, but on the Tribute there is a simple arrow that you must make level with the ground in order to ensure it is at the correct recline position.

What I don’t like about the Tribute LX is that, while it does have a recline stand, it isn’t sufficient for all vehicles. Some vehicles have more slanted seats than others, and many car seats address this issue by having many reclining positions. The Tribute LX does not have enough positions and in fact instructs parents to use a rolled up towel to put under the car seat in order to maintain the proper recline position. I don’t know about you, but I don’t feel comfortable depending on a towel to keep my car seat propped in the correct way!

Not enough padding

You know the saying about getting what you pay for? That applies here. This is a great seat considering the cost, but the materials may not be top-quality and there is limited padding. When it comes down to it, you want your child to be comfortable (for both of your sakes!). This seat doesn’t have sufficient padding to provide enough comfort for long car rides, in my opinion.

Not an all-in-1

The Evenflo Tribute LX will not last you through every stage of your child’s car seat needs. The weight limit only goes up to 40 pounds when front facing, meaning you will eventually need to purchase another car seat to accommodate your child once they get older. It is recommended for your child to use a booster seat until they are 57 inches tall and a regular car seat belt fits properly.

Price

As I stated above, the Evenflo Tribute LX convertible seat is very inexpensive. This is because it does not have over the top features like you will find on more expensive models.

Ease of Use Ratings

When it comes to safety, installation and ease of use are incredibly important. While all car seats are required to pass federal safety testing, some are easier to use than others. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration computes an ease of use rating for every car seat in several categories. See the ratings below.

Overall, the Tribute LX  received a rating of  2 stars for both forward and rear facing modes.

My Recommendation

Honestly, I think this is a great option for a second car seat or traveling car seat. If you are looking for a cheap and lightweight car seat to travel with, or just need a second car seat for the grandparents to keep, the Evenflo Tribute is worth considering. I personally wouldn’t use this as my son’s main car seat just because of the lack of padding and the sharp edges. It does stand up to all federal crash test standards, but I like to see a little more protection to ensure the car seat I have is well above any standards out there. But like I said, this is a great option for frequent travelers looking for a lightweight and inexpensive infant or toddler seat!
