by Sarah Stockett |

With so much activity and so little coordination, it’s important to protect your toddler’s head. In my opinion, the best overall helmet for toddlers is the SUNVP Kids Toddler Helmet. You’ll see below this helmet was also the top choice for skateboarding.

If you have ever shopped for helmets you know that there’s a variety of shapes and styles available. These different styles indicate the different sports when you should use the helmet.

Any time your child is riding a trike, bike, scooter, or skateboard; you want them to wear a helmet. Likewise, your child should also wear a helmet for skating, skiing, or snowboarding. And don’t forget to strap a helmet on when your little one rides on your bike or in a trailer.

With so many activities that require helmets, it can be tough to decide what to buy. Here’s a guide to the best helmets for your toddler.

If your toddler is closer to one than two, you’re going to want a slightly different kind of protection for their head. The Nutcase – Baby Nutty Bike Helmet is designed as a bike helmet for younger or smaller toddlers and offers more coverage for the whole skull.

Why It’s the Best

The Nutcase – Baby Nutty Bike Helmet comes with all the essentials that you expect for safety:

  • EPS foam liner,
  • removable pads to allow the helmet to fit properly and also grow with your child, and
  • lightweight style.

It also has 11 vents to ensure that your child’s head stays cool. These vents allow trapped heat to escape. However, unlike some other vents, these are covered with bug nets to help make sure that bugs don’t get in.

Additionally, the Nutcase offers a Fidlock magnetic closure. This means that you don’t have to worry about pinching your little one’s neck when you fasten their helmet. Also, the magnetic closure is padded, so it’s comfortable under your child’s chin.

This adjustable helmet is certified for use for children age 1-3 with head circumferences between 47 and 50 centimeters. Adjustments are made with pads and elastic bands to ensure a good fit. It comes in 3 bright, fun colors.

The Joovy Noodle Helmet offers protection for your little one’s head with a more traditional style of bike helmet. If you or your spouse are biking enthusiasts, this helmet style will be a closer match to what you may use for yourself. This could be very exciting for your little one to get a helmet that resembles that of a parent.

Why It’s the Best

With its extended visor, this toddler helmet closely resembles similar helmets for adults. This can be particularly beneficial if your little one is resistant to wearing helmets. Plus, the extended visor will help keep sun out of your child’s eyes.

There are 14 air vents to help keep your little one cool. The front vents are covered with a bug mesh to ensure that bugs don’t fly into your child’s helmet.

This helmet is safe for children age 1-4 years old with a head size between 18.5 and 20.5 inches. The manufacturer recommends wrapping a string around your child’s head and measuring that to ensure that the helmet will fit.  An adjustable fit dial helps you adjust the helmet as your child grows.

Also, the helmet is very reasonably priced and comes in 7 bright colors.

Best Toddler Skateboarding Helmet

You all probably know this, but it’s not appropriate to buy a “bike helmet” and wear it as head protection while skateboarding. If a helmet is designed to protect your head during a certain activity, it will let you know. Don’t take it upon yourself to guess. This is part of the reason why I picked the SUNVP Kids Toddler Helmet as the best toddler skateboarding helmet.

Why It’s the Best

The manufacturer indicates that this helmet can be used for “cycling, skiing, camping, outdoor sport exercise.” This means that for every outdoor activity, you should be covered. Skateboarding are skating are specifically mentioned in the product name, so I know they are included in the “outdoor sport exercise” category.

Some other benefits of this helmet are that it:

  • is lightweight,
  • has an EPS foam lining,
  • is made of PVC,
  • has 10 air vents,
  • comes in 4 colors, and
  • has a helmet adjuster.

Also, there are two sizes for the helmets. The small size is for children 2-6 years old with heads measuring between 16.2 and 20.5 inches. The medium size is for children 5-12 years old with heads measuring between 17.7 and 22.1 inches.

Best Toddler Skiing Helmet

As I mentioned before, you should only use a helmet for its listed purposes. For that reason, I wanted to have a category for toddler ski helmets. The best toddler ski helmet is the OUTAD Children’s Helmet.

Why It’s the Best

This helmet, which is listed as a multi-sport helmet, is approved for rock climbing, cycling, drift skiing, hiking, skateboarding, riding scooters, BMX bike riding, and inline and roller skating. Basically, if you can do it, this helmet will work for you.

The helmet is made of ABS with EPS foam and a soft cotton liner inside. This means that the exterior of this helmet is very durable with the necessary foam interior to keep your child’s head safe and ensure a good fit. There are 11 vents throughout the helmet and an adjustable chin strap to help keep your child comfortable.

There are three sizes available for each of the 4 color choices. The small is for head circumferences of 50-54 centimeters or 19.7-21.3 inches. The medium is for 54-58 centimeters or 21.3-22.8 inches, and the large is for 58-60 centimeters or 22.8-23.6 inches.

Best Toddler Safety Kit with Helmet

Sometimes, you don’t just want to buy a helmet; you want to buy a whole kit. I remember that I was looking for something like this with my first child. In my desperate search for a fun, matching ensemble; we ended up with a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle kit that I created myself. The elbow and knee pads were so small that they couldn’t fit on my 3-year-old.

I wish I would have found this kit instead. The best safety kit with a helmet is the Hikup Children Helmet.

Why It’s the Best

The helmet is a high quality. It’s made of durable PC plastic and expanded polystyrene. This means that when your child falls, the helmet won’t crack or break. Beneath this tough shell is a layer with an elastic compression protection sponge pad, then a high-density shock compression EPS middle layer.

The helmet design features side vents for extra airflow. The fastener uses a Velcro strap with a strong buckle and padding under the chin for comfort.

Make sure to pay attention to what size you order, though. This manufacturer offers several sizes of helmets, and the helmets aren’t adjustable. For this reason, you want to be certain you know your child’s head size when you order.

As with the helmet, the knee and elbow pads also use Velcro straps. The Velcro makes it much easier for your child to get protective gear on and off themselves without your help. This independence means that your child is more likely to use the protective gear, which is great because protective gear can’t protect your child if he or she doesn’t wear it.

This kit comes in 4 different designs that would be suitable for both boys and girls. Plus, it comes with a 30 days money back guarantee.

Best Toddler Helmet with a Fun Design

Some of the other helmets are colorful or have a colorful design, but none of them are quite as fun as this one. The best toddler helmet with a fun design is Bingggooo’s Kids Helmet.

As I mentioned earlier, my oldest had a really great Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle helmet. Personally, I value a fun helmet. In my opinion, many helmets are going to provide similar safety with similar comfort, so you might as well wear something fun.

Why It’s the Best

The Bingggooo’s Kids Helmet is the best “fun” helmet for several reasons. The shell is PC injection moulded with EPS foam inside. There are pads for the inside of the helmet and an adjustment knob to ensure proper fit. Like several other “best” helmets, the chin strap is adjustable and padded for comfort.

The helmet also offers four vents integrated into the fun dragon design. Plus, this dragon-style helmet comes in five colors.

The manufacturer advises that this helmet fits head sizes 48-52 centimeters and a head width of 16.5 centimeters. Make sure to measure your child’s head before you order to ensure that this helmet will fit.

They also say that this helmet is suitable for bike riding, roller skating, and scooter riding.

My Pick

Out of all of these helmets, my personal choice for my kids is the SUNVP Kids Toddler Helmet. I picked this helmet because of its construction, the number of air vents, and its internal adjustable knob. I feel like an adjusting knob is a great way to ensure the helmet is fitting properly and going to do its job.

Also, I really like that this helmet serves multiple purposes. When my kids play, it may be bikes one minute and scooters the next. In order for me to feel like they’re safe, I want them to wear a multi-purpose helmet, and I want to know that it fits their head correctly.
