Best Lightweight Strollers for Convenient Travel and Play

These lightweight strollers weigh between 10 and 20 pounds; less than most toddlers. I have reviewed options like the UPPAbaby Minu Stroller, the Summer Infant Tote 3D Convenience Stroller, the Joovy Twin Groove, and countless others to narrow down the top contenders.

These best lightweight strollers are leaders in safety, comfort, and functionality.

Best Overall Lightweight Stroller:
Best Inexpensive Lightweight Stroller :

The Top Lightweight Strollers

The lightest strollers are the Baby Jogger City Tour, the Contours Bitsy, and the Maxi-Cosi Lara, which weigh 14 lbs.  The UPPAbaby MINU weighs 15 lbs, with the Summer 3Dtote and the Graco Breaze weighing 17 lbs.  The Chicco Liteway weighs almost 19 lbs, and our heaviest stroller is the Ergobaby Metro, which weighs 21 lbs.

Chicco Liteway Stroller

The Chicco Liteway Stroller weighs 18.8 pounds and is designed to be used with children up to 40 pounds. It is designed especially for short outings and will grow with your child, having plenty of adjustable features.

Functionality

The adjustable features let this umbrella stroller grow with your child up to 40 pounds. The backrest adjusts into 4 different positions with a single hand. The footrest is also adjustable. You only have to look at the fabric to see how soft and comfortable the padding looks.

liteway storage basket and recline adjustment

The padding also covers the 5-point safety harness that holds your little one securely in place. One downside is that the shoulder straps come away from the bottom of the seat belt. This can make it hard to put squirmy children into the seat, especially when they are resisting your efforts.

The well-designed wheels also let this model conquer different terrains. The front wheels have an optional swivel function, which lets it navigate everything from concrete and linoleum to sand and gravel. Toe-tap brakes are incredibly responsive and perfect for traveling up and down hilly areas.

When not in use, this model has a single-hand fold and latching mechanism. It can be carried with the attached carrying handle.

Features

The canopy is adjustable and removable, which is great when you want your little one to soak up their surroundings. It also has a peekaboo window. Underneath the stroller, an easily accessible and roomy basket gives you room for necessities.

There is also a removable parent cup holder. While the removable features are nice, they can also be a hassle when folding and putting away.

chicco liteway

Even though this is considered a lighter stroller, it is built incredibly durable. It is something that will last for years even through a second or third child if you want.

Additionally, the curved foam handles are comfortable for parents to hold onto regardless of their height.

Chicco also makes the Mini Bravo Stroller, which is another good lightweight option we’ve reviewed, although it doesn’t fold up like an umbrella stroller.

Pros

  • Durable, lightweight build
  • Curved foam handles are comfortable for parents
  • Adjustable features let this grow with your child
  • Toe-tap brakes and swivel wheels make maneuverability easy

Cons

  • Removable features may come off when folding
  • Seat belt makes it hard to put stubborn kids in the stroller

Baby Jogger City Tour 2 Stroller

Baby Jogger City Tour 2 Double Stroller

You’ve probably heard of the gb Pockit stroller, or even the very similar but cheaper Delta Children’s Clutch Stroller. Like the Contours Bitsy that we mentioned above, these strollers fold into a small, light, and easily transported shape.

baby jogger city tour2 folded
Baby Jogger City Tour 2 Folded

But what if I told you that for a similar price, you could get a stroller that’s just as lightweight, folds just as compact, but looks sleeker and is more sturdy? Well, that is what the Baby Jogger City Tour 2 Stroller can do. And then some.

Functionality

This 14-pound stroller isn’t the lightest stroller on the list, but that’s not its hallmark. Now, it only weighs 2 more pounds than the famed Clutch stroller, but it’s not as flimsy. That’s what this stroller is all about: offering the functionality of a very lightweight stroller with all the conveniences you need from a regular stroller.

The folded dimensions are a compact 19 x 7 x 23 inches, which will leave you plenty of space in a trunk or fit nicely into some airline’s overhead compartments. But maybe the best part is that you can do the fold one-handed. No negotiating the stroller into some weird shape. You can pull the lever on the handle, push it down, grab it by the carrying strap, and be on your way.

Hot tip: If you want a slightly smaller fold, go with the older version, called the Baby Jogger City Tour stroller. It even comes with a backpack carrying bag instead of a tote bag. It’s also a bit cheaper, albeit a bit smaller in the seat.

Features

Remember how I said that this best compact stroller would still offer you all the conveniences of a regular stroller? The biggest convenience is that you’ll get 3 ways to ride: as a normal toddler stroller, as a car seat carrier, or as a pram with the Baby Jogger Carry Cot. That means that this one small stroller can potentially cover all areas of the first few years of your child’s life. This makes it a one-and-done stroller.

More great features include a massive canopy with UV rated fabric and a peek-a-boo window. Your kid will be still comfier in the fold-flat recline seat with 5 point safety harness, lots of space, and adjustable calf support.

city tour 2 with extended footrest
City Tour 2 with the footrest extended for calf support

Parents will love the durable rubber tires, that while small, can conquer any flat surface. The front wheels can swivel or lock. You’ll also love the roomy basket under the seat. Oh, and let’s not forget that this has an actual push handle instead of those candy cane hook things you find on a lot of lightweight strollers.

And if you want to add any functionality to this stroller, you can purchase your own add-ons, like a belly bar, a cup holder, or a parent console.

Pros

  • Folds up small to fit in a trunk or overhead compartment
  • Can be used with a car seat or Carry Cot
  • One-handed fold and unfold
  • Comfortable, deep seat with adjustable calf support

Cons

  • Not a ton of storage
  • Back support is a little short
  • Front wheels are noisy

Summer Infant 3Dtote Convenience Stroller

The affordable Summer Infant 3Dtote Convenience Stroller comes with an extended storage basket that can be found under and behind the stroller.

It offers more storage than many others, with additional side storage and cell phone pockets, 4 cup holders, and plenty of other features.

Functionality

The large, 6-inch wheels and easy-glide bearings let this umbrella stroller seamlessly roll over obstacles. The front wheels are anti-shock and maneuver easily, while the back wheels have a simple braking system. This is not as convenient as the dual brakes, but it gets the job done.

Even though there is a lot of storage, not all of it is practical. It can be almost impossible to access the large storage area when your little one is reclined.

Additionally, the diaper bag hooks are a nice feature but they will not accommodate more than five pounds of weight which is significantly less than the average mom’s diaper bag.

A padded 5-point harness with an easy-to-push button adjusts as your little one grows. The footrest is also adjustable and there are three positions for the recline function.

Something else to keep in mind is that even though this is designed to work with children up to 50 pounds, the seat is not deep and larger kids may not be comfortable. For a better choice, consider these strollers for 3-, 4-, and 5-year-olds with large weight limits.

Features

The extendable canopy offers protection from the sun and rain, offering plenty of coverage for your little one. It also has a pop-out visor and peeping window. The height of this stroller and the design of the handles make it a good choice for short or tall parents.

Another great feature is its one-handed design use a single hand to adjust the recline, close the stroller and lock it in place, or undo your little one’s safety belt.

Another nice feature is the cover that goes over the easy-open button for the safety harness it’s perfect for those toddlers who might try to undo the clasp while you are on the go. Little ones will also sit in comfort, with plenty of adjustable features and a heavily padded seat and restraint system.

Pros

  • Easy-open safety button (and cover)
  • A lot more storage than the average umbrella stroller
  • Extendable canopy with peekaboo window for protection from sun and rain
  • Large wheels and suspension system give a smooth ride

Cons

  • Hard to access storage area when seat is reclined
  • Seat is not deep enough for some kids
  • Diaper bag hooks only hold 5 pounds
  •

UPPAbaby Minu Stroller

The UPPAbaby Minu Stroller weighs about 15 pounds. It is designed for children from ages 3 months up until they reach 55 pounds.

It is also incredibly functional, with UPF protection, accessible storage, and a convenient carrying strap for transport when the stroller is folded. You can take an in-depth look in our UPPAbaby Minu review.

Functionality

For safety, this has a 5-point harness to keep your little one secure. It is designed to work at age three months but can be used for younger infants if you purchase the car seat adapter. However, these are not compatible with all car seat models.

Additionally, while the bassinet does fold up, there is a lot of fabric that can be difficult to fold away.

The compact fold of this best compact stroller comes from a design that allows it to fold twice, instead of once like typical strollers. While it does offer a one-hand fold, it does not have a one-hand open. When it is folded, a single strap lets you carry the compact stroller that is no bigger than a backpack.

minu v2 folded

This compact design makes this fit in overhead storage compartments, making this a good alternative to the Bersey model discussed in our article on best umbrella strollers.

It also rolls over obstacles very smoothly and it does make a slight noise but the stroller navigates well. Linked brakes also make this a nice ride pushing the red lever brakes both wheels and the green lever sets them free again.

Features

With such a high price tag, most parents would expect more features. It is sold without features like a tray, cup holders, or a footrest for your child. However, the edge of the seat is padded well and folds over naturally, so your little one’s legs can dangle.

minu v2 seat and bumper bar
Padded seat and padded bumper bar

Another great feature is the tall handles, designed with soft and durable leather that has micro-perforation to improve grip and create breathability. The design of the handles makes this a contender for the best lightweight stroller for tall parents.

For storage, this stroller has a large storage pocket under the handles and a bottom storage pocket with a 20-pound weight limit. Your little one has a reclined seat function, but it only reclines by 30 degrees.

Over top, an expandable canopy has a UPF 50 extendable shade. The canopy also has a vented window.

Pros

  • Good choice for the airport
  • Convenient fold (one-handed)
  • Color-coded dual braking system
  • Good stroller for tall parents

Cons

  • Minimal recline function
  • Few features for a high price

Contours Bitsy Lightweight Travel Stroller

Contours - Bitsy & Bitsy Elite - Compact Fold Lightweight Stroller Travel Bag - Black
Quality
Popularity

The Contours Bitsy Lightweight Travel Stroller is umbrella stroller is designed for parents on the go, having an incredibly compact fold and weighing just 13.5 pounds.

It is usable with children up to 40 inches and 40 pounds. It is also designed to work with many car seats, which is good if you want to use this stroller before your little one can support him- or herself.

Functionality

In addition to being lightweight, this model is sleek. The one-handed fold allows this compact stroller to fold into dimensions that make it perfect for airline travel. It also stands on its own when folded.

A nice feature of this seat is the compatibility if you do want to use it with an infant carrier, it is compatible with over 30 brands without the use of an adapter.

The wheels are also nice, as they navigate obstacles easily. Though lacking in storage space, there are also diaper bag hooks that hold a diaper bag without falling over. This is also easy to fold and unfold, though some users have reported needing to pop the ‘joint’ of the stroller into place to open it fully.

Features

For comfort, the seat reclines to 140 degrees, while the edge of the seat is soft and curves over gently. One downside about the reclining is that it does not sit up enough for children who are interested in the world around them. The part of the footrest on the seat is adjustable, while a molded footrest below adds support.

The storage area is a little shallow, but this is the price for the small dimensions of the stroller. Unfortunately, it is a little costly compared to other models and the lack of features with this model.

Over the top of your little one, an expandable canopy shields them from the sun with UPF 50 protection. A mesh peekaboo window also lets you keep an eye on your little one you can open it for better visibility. It is also magnetic instead of Velcro, which is quiet.

While this model does not come with a carrying strap, there is a travel bag that can be purchased separately to make carrying easier.

Pros

  • Magnetic peekaboo window is quiet
  • Small enough to fit on most airlines
  • Adjustable footrest
  • Diaper bag hook makes up for minimal storage space

Cons

  • Does not come with a carrying strap
  • Moderate price for minimum features
  • Recline sits back too far for some kids

Joovy Twin Groove Ultralight Umbrella Stroller

Designed for newborns up to 50 pounds (100 pounds total), the Joovy Twin Groove Ultralight Umbrella Stroller is perfect for mommies of twins, siblings who are close in age, or those who frequently babysit.

It weighs just 26 pounds and has a durable lightweight aluminum frame. Even though it is light for its size, this stroller is also packed full of storage space and extra features. If this doesn’t cut it, check out our review of the best double strollers.

Functionality

This umbrella stroller is great if you want something that will last your children it has a bassinet mode that allows it to lie flat without an infant’s car seat. A netted enclosure can be pulled up from a pocket under the seat to keep your little one safe while in bassinet mode.

Additionally, each of the seats reclines independently, which is perfect for parents with kids who have different needs.

While this does work well when moving across linoleum or the average smooth pavement, this stroller is not ideal for all-terrain riding. It can be too bumpy.

Additionally, one of the parent cup holders gets in the way when going in doorways. This may need to be removed completely to avoid the hassle. When not in use, the stroller has a standing fold. You can also easily tote it around with the included carrying strap.

Features

This model is loaded with storage features, including 2 undercarriage baskets, a side pouch on each side of the stroller, zippered parent pouches on the rear of the stroller, and a parent cup holder. There are also 2 mesh pockets for each child on the sides of their seat and a cup holder.

One of the downsides of the undercarriage storage area is that it must be accessed from the front, which can be difficult if your kiddo is kicking or sleeping.

The dual canopies are large and expandable. They are also easy to clean and have a UPF 50+ coating, as well as a peekaboo window. Fabrics used in the stroller are water- and stain-resistant.

Another nice feature is safety reflectors for night walks. For your little one’s comfort, there is good padding and a two-position adjustable footrest.

For your comfort, there are tall, foam handles with a nice curvature that fits well in the average hand.

Pros

  • High weight range (works from newborn to 50 pounds)
  • Carrying strap included
  • Recline function operates individually
  • Plenty of storage space
  • Tall, comfortable handles

Cons

  • Parent cup holder makes stroller too wide for some doorways
  • May be hard to access bottom storage basket
  • Not good for going over obstacles

Maxi-Cosi Lara Lightweight Ultra Compact Stroller

The Maxi-Cosi Lara Lightweight Ultra Compact Stroller comes packed with features and weighs just 14 pounds.

It has a near-flat recline and works for children up to 50 pounds, giving it a long lifetime of use. The stroller has all-wheel suspension for a smooth ride no matter what terrain you are on.

Functionality

The compact and lightweight design of this stroller make it perfect for travel whether you are getting on an airplane or strolling around a flea market. A double-decker storage basket offers plenty of storage and separation of items.

For your child, a 5-point harness keeps them safe.  It is made of superior fabric for breathability, but this may stain easier than other fabrics.

The canopy offers full protection from the sun and has a peek-a-boo window too. However, what makes this stroller truly special is it’s a lightweight stroller that is compatible with baby car seats.

It folds up so small you can take it on an airplane.

Features

Not many lightweight strollers work from birth, but since this option works with car seats, you can use it from birth. Babies can even use the main seat too once you are ready.

The stroller includes a comfortable strap so you can carry it like a purse. That’s how portable this stroller is for your family.

Next, the stroller includes multiple positions of recline. Babies can sleep comfortably too as the leg rest comes up to give them more space.

Another great feature is the extended, three-tier canopy that has UV-protection and water-resistant fabric. There is also a peekaboo window.

Pros

  • Tiered storage basket
  • Seat is breathable
  • Peek-a-boo window
  • Holds up to 50 pounds
  • Footrest goes up for babies
  • Extended canopy for protection from wind, sun, and rain
  • Navigates terrain easily
  • Carry strap
  • Multi-position recline

Cons

  • Too small for some children
  • The price is very high for an umbrella style stroller but it comes with a lot of features

Graco Breaze Click Connect Stroller

The Graco Breaze Click Connect Stroller weighs just 17.8 pounds.

Its compatibility with Graco Click Connect car seats gives you the option of building your own travel system.

The umbrella stroller is designed to work with newborns up to 50 pounds and its durability means you will get that much use out of it.

Functionality

Something that sets this stroller apart is its incredibly simple folding process. It takes a single hand and the stroller automatically locks, so all you need to do after folding is pick up the carrying strap and go.

It is also easy to use this with newborns, as there is only one step to attach any Graco Click Connect infant seat. Unfortunately, the large storage basket is completely inaccessible when this stroller is being used as a travel system.

Another benefit of this stroller is the ease that it navigates different terrains. Among its features are front swivel wheels that can be locked for different terrains. However, the wheels are plastic and do not absorb shock well, so some terrains can create a bumpy ride for your little one.

Features

One downside to this umbrella stroller is the canopy. Even though it is advertised as being ‘extra large’, it is actually on the small side and may not protect your little one’s face from the sun when they are sitting up. The UPF 50 protection doesn’t do anything if your little one isn’t in the shade. It also has a peekaboo window.

For comfort, this has deluxe padding. The 3-point and 5-point safety harnesses allow this to grow with your toddler. There is also a multi-position recline, including a flat position, and adjustable calf support.

Under the stroller, an easy-access, extra-large storage area can be found. A removable parent cup holder is also included.

Pros

  • Multiple recline functions and adjustable calf support
  • Easy fold and automatic locking
  • Easy to use as a travel system with Graco Click Connect car seats
  • Navigates over different terrains well

Cons

  • Cannot access storage basket when used with a car seat
  • Bumpy ride over rough terrain
  • Canopy is not as large as expected

Baby Joy Double Lightweight Stroller

BABY JOY Double Light-Weight Stroller, Travel Foldable Design, Twin Umbrella Stroller with 5-Point Harness, Cup Holder, Sun Canopy for Baby, Toddlers (Black)
Price$$
Quality
Popularity

The Baby Joy Double Lightweight Stroller is much lighter than some other double strollers, being just 18 pounds.

It is designed to support your child from age six months up to 35 pounds, having a total weight limit of 70 pounds. It is incredibly affordable for a double stroller as well.

Functionality

This stroller is easy to open and close and incredibly compact, despite being a double stroller. One problem when unfolded is its width, which is 31″ from the outside of each wheel. This might make it hard to navigate through some doorways.

The umbrella stroller also has 360 swivel front wheels, which work over speed bumps, on brick or cobblestones, and over other obstacles. This makes it a good choice for the best lightweight all-terrain stroller, especially for parents of two little ones.

While this does have two storage pouches on the back of the seat, as well as two easy-access zipper pouches, there is no storage underneath. A padded 5-point safety harness and breathable, soft seat padding keep your little one safe and comfortable.

Though this has a parent cup holder, it does not appear especially sturdy. The stroller handles also may not be tall enough for some parents. This can make it awkward to push, especially since this is a double stroller.

Features

In addition to the comfort offered by the seat, there is a recline function that operates separately. It is not a deep recline, but it is enough for most kids to get some shut-eye if they need it.

The adjustable canopy offers protection from the sun and wind. It offers a mesh peekaboo window that lets you keep an eye on your little one while improving breathability through the stroller.

Pros

  • Seats recline individually
  • Soft padding to add to comfort
  • Affordable option for a double stroller
  • Navigates different types of terrain well

Cons

  • No storage under the stroller
  • Handles may not be tall enough for some parents

Ergobaby Metro Compact City Stroller

Ergobaby Metro+ Compact Baby Stroller, Lightweight Umbrella Stroller Folds Down for Overhead Airplane Storage (Carries up to 50 lbs), Car Seat Compatible, Slate Grey
Price$$
Popularity

With a weight of just 14 pounds, the Ergobaby Metro Compact City Stroller is designed for children from birth to 40 pounds.

It is loaded with features that add to your little one’s comfort. Though it is a little on the expensive side, your child will appreciate the thought put into the comfort of their ride.

Functionality

When folded, this is small enough to be put in the overhead compartment of many airlines or stowaway under a table when you stop for lunch. The seat pad is removable and machine washable, which is always a nice bonus.

For storage, there is a hidden pocket on the back of a seat and a large storage basket underneath.

Part of the comfort of this model comes from the wheels and suspension system. Large back tires and spring suspension absorb shock from cracks and bumps. The wheels are puncture-free polyurethane rubber, which handles obstacles better than plastic tires used by some other manufacturers.

The stroller is also easy to fold. You can also carry it easily using the included carrying strap. It is light enough to carry in one arm while you carry your child in the other.

Features

This stroller is loaded with soft, plush support for your little one’s head, neck, back, bottom, and leg. Statistically, it has 40% more padding than compact stroller competitors. The padding provides multi-zone support for your little one’s sides, as well as lumbar padding.

The Ergobaby stroller also has an adjustable leg rest and a one-handed recline with four different positions. While they nap, a large sun canopy provides UPF 50 protection for your child.

There is also an optional mesh panel, which allows breathability on hot days and functions as a peekaboo window.

Pros

  • Four reclining positions, including near-flat recline
  • Large rear wheels and suspension offer a smooth ride
  • Easy to fold and transport with carrying strap
  • Superior padding to other strollers

Cons

  • Expensive (but loaded with features)

Mountain Buggy Nano Stroller

Mountain Buggy Nano Stroller, Black
Price$$
Quality
Popularity

The Mountain Buggy Nano Stroller can be used for infants up to 44 pounds.

It weighs just 13 pounds and has a 2-step fold that allows a very compact size. It is a great companion for airline travel (or just walking around town). This model was updated in 2016 so be sure to choose the updated model for a better experience.

Functionality

The large, slim wheels of this stroller navigate over terrain easily. It also lets you ‘hop’ over curbs easily by leaning the stroller onto its back wheels. While it is easy to pop this stroller open when you are ready to use it, it is not as easy to fold it shut again. You need two hands and it can be difficult to get the stroller inside the carrying bag.

To use this for an infant, there are two options. You can use it with an infant car seat, without the need for an adapter. Alternatively, you can purchase the carrycot separately.

This is a softshell cocoon that cradles your baby while they lie flat and a five-point harness keeps them in place.

In addition to working with infants, it works with kids up to 44 pounds. The tall design of the stroller on the back is perfect for kids with height.

Features

For comfort, this seat offers plenty of padding and a reclining seat back. After 2016, the model was also made with a deeper seating area. The canopy has a larger design than it did previously, maximizing protection from the wind and sun.

There are not too many other features included. Though there is no cup holder, there is a storage basket underneath. The light weight stroller also comes with a complimentary carrying bag and strap that make getting it where you need it to be easy.

Pros

  • Deep seating area
  • Easy to unfold
  • Works for infants without a car seat adapter
  • Tall, reclining seat back and deep seat

Cons

  • Hard to get storage bag on
  • Cannot close with one hand

Best Inexpensive Lightweight Strollers

Our most inexpensive stroller is the Summer 3Dmini,  yet it still offers great extras and only weighs 11 lbs.  While a little pricier, the still reasonable Chicco Liteway has 4 reclining positions and weighs more at 18.8.”  Our most expensive, but still well priced is the Joovy Balloon, which has toe-tap brakes and swivel wheels for a smooth ride and weighs 12 lbs.

We already mentioned the Chicco Liteway Stroller above, but it also belongs here as the top inexpensive lightweight stroller on our list.

Price$$
Quality
Popularity

The Summer Infant 3Dmini Convenience Stroller is the most affordable lightweight stroller and it only weighs 11 pounds!

It works for children up to 45 in forward-facing mode. It is also convenient to travel with and easy to maneuver, as it’s so lightweight.

Functionality

This is perfect for traveling with older infants without breaking the bank. It would be great if it could reverse like an older model that’s no longer available but what makes this one special is the low price and weight.

There is also infant head support, a 5-point harness, and a flat recline that lets this light stroller be used with older infants. It has multiple reclines and works great at an amusement park.

While navigating, smooth glide wheels keep you moving swiftly over obstacles. The front wheels are designed to swivel but can also be locked for handling other terrains. You can also stop quickly with toe-tap brakes.

When you are done, a single hand and toe are all that is needed to fold up this stroller. A compact fold makes this easy to take anywhere and it has a hassle-free canopy.

Features

For storage, this has an easy-access side pocket and a parent cup holder. While there is a storage basket underneath, you have to lift the bottom of the seat to access it. This can be inconvenient if your little one is napping.

The canopy is large and provides plenty of sun protection. Unlike other models, this canopy allows you to adjust the height. This is good since the overhang from the canopy may touch your child’s head if it is not centered between the sides of the stroller when you are adjusting. The pope down makes it easier to keep the sun out of babies’ eyes.

Pros

  • Weighs only 11 pounds
  • Large weight range means many years of use
  • Easy to maneuver and navigate
  • Adjustable footrest, canopy, and seat recline
  • Very affordable for any budget
  • Folds up small
  • Large parent storage

Cons

  • Overhang from canopy may touch your child’s head
  • Hard to access undercarriage storage basket

Joovy Balloon Stroller

Joovy Balloon Stroller, Red
Quality
Popularity

Designed for children from newborn age up to 45 pounds, the Joovy Balloon Stroller weighs just 12.7 pounds.

If you are going to choose this stroller, be sure you have the updated version. Joovy released an upgraded wheel and suspension system on August 1, 2016. For people who buy an older model, you can contact the company to get the updated wheels for free.

Functionality

This Joovy model is designed to be reversible. This is perfect for little ones who may have separation anxiety. As they age, your child can be turned around to look at the world around them.

The reversible design does its job, but it also doesn’t give enough room for parent’s feet when it is in face-to-face mode. Most people end up kicking the suspension system or the tires of the stroller while walking.

The 160-degree recline in bassinet mode and the adjustable footrest make it perfect for infants who cannot support themselves yet. Additionally, a universal car seat adapter works with any brand or model of car seat.

Once they grow, a safety belt keeps them secure while the stroller is in motion. A removable bumper bar also comes with the seat.

Features

The canopy is adjustable, so you can control just how much sun your little one is getting. It gives UPF 50 protection and expands farther than many comparable stroller canopies. Even though the hood offers a lot of coverage, it does not provide protection from the rain.

This also has a standing fold, which is great for storage. However, this is not the most compact stroller during storage because the handle does not fold in.

Finally, two cup holders and a large storage area give you space on the go.

We have a full review of the Joovy Balloon Stroller here.

Pros

  • Reversible
  • Universal compatibility with car seats
  • UPF 50 protection on sun canopy
  • Works for newborns to children up to 45 pounds
  • Upgraded wheel and suspension system offers easy turning and better travel

Cons

  • Canopy does not offer rain protection
  • Handle does not fold in when stored, can be bulky
  • Not enough room for parent’s feet when in face-to-face mode

Lightweight Stroller Buying Guide

While the weight, size, and safety of a lightweight umbrella stroller are obviously among the first things considered by parents, there are numerous other factors to keep in mind.

As you read through this list, consider which features are necessary for how you want to use your stroller and which you can do without. Then, look for a stroller in your budget that has the features you need.

Overall Weight and Size

As parents consider a regular or light stroller vs. umbrella stroller, the overall weight is a major factor.

A design that is lightweight and compact is considered an umbrella stroller. It is generally made for travel, though some navigate better indoors. Some also offer a lot of storage space, while others take away extra features for a lighter build. Nearly always, they are collapsible enough to be easily transported.

The weight can be a factor when you are lugging something around, especially if you are looking for the best umbrella stroller for vacation or going to the park.

The size of the stroller and its design affects how compactly it will fold. Some parents buy umbrella strollers especially for airline travel. If you are unsure of the dimensions that can be stored in the overhead, call ahead and ask. This can prevent a lot of frustration at the airport, especially when you are traveling with a child.

Of course, size is not always a measure of how easy it will be to transport a stroller. Consider factors like if there is a carrying handle or strap to make moving the stroller around either. Others might come with stroller carrying bags. If there is not one included, you can look for extra accessories online.

You should also consider storage. Some offer a free-standing fold, which is nice for standing on indoor porches or in a closet when the stroller is not in use. You can also easily stand the stroller next to you at the park or in a restaurant. Others are compact but do not stand freely. This means you’ll need enough room to set the stroller on its side.

Safety Features

Safety is a priority for baby products. Before being sold online and on market shelves, strollers must meet minimum safety standards for strollers. It is unlikely that a stroller will be sold knowingly without meeting these standards, but it always a good idea to check.

Additionally, you should be aware of recalls. Sometimes, manufacturers do not realize a part is malfunctioning or faulty until after it is sold. You may be able to return the item or receive an updated version of the malfunctioning piece.

One major consideration for safety is your child’s size. If your little one does not fall within the recommended weight limits, it is unsafe for them to use an umbrella stroller. It may cause them to slip out and get hurt or the stroller to tip over. The safety belt is another thing to consider. If the stroller is designed for use with children 2 and under, they usually feature a five-point harness.

Before using a stroller with your toddler for the first time, you should take it home and inspect it thoroughly. Start by checking the latch for the safety belt and be sure that it clicks into place. Then, look at the locking mechanisms that hold the stroller open. If they are not in place, it can cause the lightweight stroller to fold in on your child or pinch their fingers.

You should also check the wheels for any loose or malfunctioning parts and be sure the brakes are working before taking the maiden voyage with your little one.

The Canopy

The canopy is a major feature of a lightweight stroller. Some are basic, while others are extendable to provide maximum protection. For a canopy to be effective, it should have UPF protection. This is a type of coating put on fabric that prevents harmful ultraviolet rays from shining through the canopy.

In addition to blocking the sun, some canopies provide water protection or resistance. While this might not keep your little one dry in a storm, it should be sufficient in a light drizzle.

Other good features that some parents want in a canopy include a peekaboo window or a mesh panel. Mesh panels are great for allowing airflow. Peekaboo windows are also great since they let you keep a closer eye on your kiddo.

Storage

The most affordable lightweight strollers may come without any storage at all, while others are designed to hold tons of gear. The amount of storage space you need depends on how often you plan on using your stroller and where you plan on using it.

For example, you may want something to carry around a change of clothes, snacks, diapers, and wipes if you need a stroller for Disney World. If you only use the stroller to walk to the park occasionally and it is only a block or two from the house, you may not need something that has so much room.

Some common storage features include cup holders, parent storage pockets, undercarriage storage, and pockets or cup holders inside the stroller so your kid has access to toys, snacks, and/0r drinks when you are on the go. Diaper bag hooks add extra storage space, but they can cause the stroller to tip if they are overloaded.

As you consider storage, you should also consider how easy or difficult it will be to access when the stroller is upright, as well as when it is reclined.

Comfort

While you may only need a simple lightweight stroller for trips around the block, you want a seat that is comfortable if you expect your kid to sit in it for any extended period of time.

Factors like padding of the stroller seat and the location of the footrest can affect how willing your little one is to stay in their seat. You should also consider the breathability of the fabric.

The adjustability of a stroller also affects comfort. Some recline in different positions, while others have adjustable footrests. As you consider the recline function, you should consider if it is a free-standing recline or if there are preset positions.

Maneuverability

Some umbrella strollers work better over flat terrain. The best strollers for travel, on the other hand, should be designed to move over gravel, sidewalk cracks, and grass. The size of the wheels and how easily they swivel come into play here.

As you consider how easy it is to push the stroller, you should also consider the braking features. Some strollers offer a dual-braking system, while others require you to brake each wheel separately.

Durability

Whether you are paying $20 or $500, you expect your stroller to last. The quality of the materials used and how they are put together affect durability. Some strollers are naturally sturdier than others. However, you should still expect them to serve their purpose. If you plan to use the stroller for several years, buy something that will last.

Something else to consider regarding durability is how easy the fabric will be to clean. Many strollers require spot cleaning. If you are worried about messes, consider a darker color or a material that is stain-resistant. This will prevent a lot of frustration in the future.

Ease of Use

The last thing parents want to do is struggle to open or close their umbrella stroller while holding their toddler in one hand. Many lightweight umbrella strollers offer the simplicity of a one-handed fold. Other ‘easy’ features include single-latch buttons, a one-hand recline, dual braking capabilities, and easy open.

Something else to consider is the height of the handlebars and the space between your feet and the undercarriage. If the handlebars are too low or too high, it can make it difficult to push. If you are unsure of the height you need, consider something with adjustable handlebars. This is also a good choice if there is a significant height difference between yourself and your partner, and you both plan on using the stroller.

Additional Features

Basics aside, strollers may come with additional features that add to convenience and comfort, while setting them apart from other competing strollers.

FAQs About Lightweight Strollers

What does the UPF for a stroller canopy mean?

The UPF label on a canopy for an umbrella stroller dictates how much of the sun’s UVA and UVB rays can penetrate the fabric. The most common come with Ultraviolet Protection Factor (UPF) 50. This label means that only 1/50th of the sun’s rays come into contact with your baby’s sensitive skin.

What makes a stroller a lightweight umbrella stroller?

The term “umbrella stroller” describes compact, usually lightweight strollers that are designed to be convenient. They offer protection from the elements and are easier to travel with than a traditional stroller.

While there is no specific designation that makes a stroller ‘lightweight’, all the models mentioned in this list are strollers weighing less than 20 pounds (with the exception of double stroller models).

How can I make a stroller safe for my newborn?

Before your child can sit up and support their head and neck, they cannot be placed in a stroller that will not keep them safe. A newborn umbrella stroller generally reclines back all the way. By lying flat, your newborn can lie safely as they would when in a crib or playpen.

Having a safe 5-point harness and a good suspension system is also important, as it will stop your little one from being jostled around while you are walking.

Finally, if you need a stroller for a newborn, consider one that has bassinet mode. The ‘bassinet’ is usually formed by extra fabric that circles around your little one’s feet while they are reclined.

How do I decide if an lightweight stroller is a good choice?

Lightweight strollers are just one option for helping you get your kiddo around easier.

There are also traditional strollers, which are bulkier, as well as jogging strollers designed for active parents, double strollers, and more.

Umbrella strollers are different from others because of their compact and lightweight design. They do not always tackle obstacles as well as other strollers, but that depends on the suspension system and wheels used in construction.

The best way to decide if a lightweight umbrella stroller is a good choice is to consider how often you travel away from the house with your little one. If it fits your lifestyle, the convenience of a smaller model works well for many parents.

Do I need to press both brakes when stopping the stroller?

With the exception of dual braking systems that brake both wheels, it is important to lock both wheels when the stroller is not in use. Even one unlocked wheel can cause the stroller to roll around when you are putting your baby in and out. It is also more likely that the stroller will tip over.

Are lightweight umbrella strollers easy to carry?

As most umbrella strollers are lightweight, it is usually the size that affects how easy or difficult they are to carry. Compactly folded strollers are easier to handle.

After being folded, some models have a carrying strap that makes lugging the stroller around easier. Others come with a carrying bag.

When this is not an option, additional accessories can be purchased to help make carrying the umbrella stroller more effortless.

Will my double umbrella stroller fit through doors?

Many manufacturers consider the width of a stroller to the average door before manufacturing. However, sometimes features like side cup holders or wide-set wheels get in the way. The standard doorway is 30″.

While it may not seem like a problem to fold the stroller to take it out of the house, it can get inconvenient when shopping or taking your kiddo to restaurants.

Can I use my lightweight stroller in grass? What about gravel? Or sand?

Lightweight strollers are not necessarily designed to be all-terrain vehicles. Some have an incredibly basic design that makes them better suited for sidewalks or walking around indoors.

The key to finding a good lightweight umbrella stroller for all terrains is to find one with the right wheels. Swivel wheels are good for navigating over bumps and flat terrain.

However, you want a locking option for sand, gravel, and grass. This helps the stroller cut through the bumpy terrain instead of being jostled around by it.

The size and material of the wheels may also make a difference. Harder plastic is less pliable than a material like polyurethane rubber.

What is the best lightweight stroller?

Up until last year, our family’s top choice would have been the Joovy Twin Groove stroller. My sons are now 3 and 5. While the little one is still stroller-ready, my five-year-old has outgrown the weight limit. He also has more energy for long walks.

This year, we switched to the UPPAbaby Minu stroller. It has just enough storage space and I really love the easy dual-braking system.
