Seventh Generation Dish Liquid Soap

Seventh Generation Dish Liquid Soap Clementine Zest Lemongrass Biodegradable Dishwashing Soap 19 Oz, Pack of 6

Popularity

While the Seventh Generation Dish Liquid Soap isn’t made for just baby bottles, it’s a fantastic soap gentle on hands. I, myself, use this soap, and I’m allergic to most dish soaps. If it’s gentle enough for sensitive skin, you can be sure it’s right for washing your baby’s products.

Not only can this soap wash bottles but every pot and dish in your house. The ingredients include Water, sodium lauryl sulfate, glycerin, lauramine oxide, caprylyl/myristyl glucoside, magnesium chloride, citric acid, and benzisothiazolinone, and methylisothiazolinone. All of the ingredients come from plants, and only the last two are cause for concern (but only when not made from plants).

Some people are very sensitive to sodium lauryl sulfate (raises hand), but this soap somehow manages to be extra gentle even with the popular foaming agent. The soap is safe for septic systems, and the bottle is recyclable, making it great for the environment too.

Finally, the soap comes in tons of different scents, but we suggest Free and Clear to make sure it doesn’t leave any unpalatable scent on the bottle that conflicts with formula or breastmilk. Enjoy a soap-free from dyes, fragrance, phosphates, and triclosan that’s USDA certified for bio-based products up to 95 percent.

Puracy Dish Soap Green Tea & Lime

Although the Puracy Dish Soap Green Tea & Lime is not labeled for baby items, it’s definitely a great option for not just baby items, but any kitchen item, as it’s natural and smells tasty. Don’t drink it, though, please. Honestly, the only way it could be better is if it was free and clear of any scent because not everyone likes green tea and lime scent.

The soap foams up without harsh chemicals for a squeaky clean finish while leaving your hand’s silky smooth thanks to plant-based ingredients. As for ingredients, you get mostly coconut cleansers, including lauryl/myristyl glucoside, Cocamidopropyl hydroxysultaine, sodium lauroamphoacetate, sodium lauryl sarcosinate, and lauramine oxide.

The other ingredients include sodium chloride, vegetable glycerin, benzisothiazolinone, tetrasodium glutamate diacetate, pink grapefruit essential oil, natural fragrance, citric acid, sodium citrate, Himalayan pink sea salt, and aloe vera.

Only two of the ingredients can cause skin irritation, so if you have sensitive skin, this may not be quite sensitive enough for you even though it’s all-natural. It cuts through grease to wash all of your dishes without harsh chemicals and even comes with a fast-rinsing formula that’s spot-free, too.

Dr. Bronner’s Pure-Castile Liquid Soap

With Dr. Bronner’s Pure-Castile Liquid Soap, you don’t just get dish soap, you get everything soap. No, this is not a joke, the soap can wash your face, body, hair, food, dishes, floors, pets, and even skunks. Although we don’t suggest you attempt washing wild skunks.

The ingredients are all organic (except water, can water be organic?), including water, coconut oil, potassium hydroxide, palm kernel oil, olive oil, mint, hemp oil, jojoba oil, more mint, citric acid, and vitamin E as tocopherol. It’s so clean, EWG gave it an A rating with very little concern for the mint and the vitamin E being the only irritants and not for everyone.

Although Dr. Bronner’s makes their soap with tons of scents, mint tends to be the favorite with its light scent and how moisturizing it is for the skin. It’s so versatile you can even dilute it to clean your counters, laundry, and pretty much your entire house without synthetic preservatives, detergents, or foaming agents.

Finally, the organic oils all come from fair trade and support people around the globe. Also, the potassium hydroxide processes out during the saponifying process.

Comparing Dish Soap for Baby Bottles

The table below compares only the recommended products on this page. A low or high Price means it is low or high compared to the other products listed. The Popularity Score reflects how often readers click on and buy the product. The Quality Score is our assessment of the overall performance and satisfaction with the product compared to others in the table.

Buying Criteria

Ingredients

Anything that touches your baby’s lips should come from natural sources to avoid allergies or reactions. Many dish soaps and dishwasher powders come with a list of chemicals ready to ruin your hands as you wash dishes. Moreover, those chemicals can leach onto dishes, especially if you are in a rush and need to get bottles clean quickly.

Worry less with ingredients better for your baby, you, and the planet. While harsher ingredients may help to clean dishes more effectively and reduce dirt and germs on dishes, if ingested in even small quantities, they can cause problems for your body. Also, the effect on the planet takes a toll, too, as those chemicals go into the water supply.

All of the soaps listed above are free of chemicals that can hurt your skin, cause stomach issues for your baby, or harm the planet. Also, when possible, choose soaps free of scents as scents can leach onto bottles too and cause babies to not like the scent or taste. If possible, use glass baby bottles if you want to avoid scents on bottles but want scented soap.

Cleaning Milk Fats

Milk fats from both formula or breastmilk can leave a milk film and even trap milk at the bottom of the bottle or on pump components. Soaps designed to fight milk residue and reduce film can help to clear all milk. This will, in turn, help the bottles to last longer, which will save you money.

Antibacterial

It makes sense to want your baby’s stuff to be free of bacteria; however, it can cause problems. The ingredients used to remove bacteria are often harmful, including triclosan and benzalkonium chloride. Also, high levels of exposure to bacteria-reducing chemicals can reduce the effectiveness of the immune system

Instead of buying soaps with harsh and damaging antibacterial ingredients, focus on improving your baby’s immune systems with antioxidants and probiotics.

What to Avoid

Other ingredients you should avoid besides antibacterial are fragrances because they are an irritant. Not only can fragrance dry out your skin but can irritate your baby’s mouth or body if ingested.

Sodium lauryl sulfate and laureth sulfate are common in soaps, shampoos, and many other personal care products. Most of them are made with coconut, which seems safe, but the manufacturing process can make them toxic. They can cause skin problems, organ system toxicity, and even disrupt the endocrine system.

Avoid parabens too, as they can cause cancer, endocrine disruption, and organ-system toxicity. Despite all the potential issues, many personal care items still contain parabens.

Also, avoid formaldehyde and chlorine as they can be very toxic for the baby, the environment, and for you too! Never use ammonia for cleaning baby items and wear gloves when cleaning with ammonia.

Cleaning Baby Bottles and Dishes

When washing baby bottles, pacifiers, dishes, or breast pump parts, it is very simple and requires only a few things – hot water in the sink and a bottle brush. Clean the bottles thoroughly and make sure to wash the brush after in the dishwasher if possible. If possible, was the nipples separately with a nipple brush and giving them an extra rinse.

Always wait until bottles to dry by using a drying rack if possible before putting the bottles away. Water that cannot dry can grow bacteria and mold, which will mean you need to throw the bottles away. Once the bottles are dry, make sure to store them without the caps on so they can continue drying.

Always store the bottles standing up to help with draining as well. If you want to dry the bottles with a towel, always make sure to use a clean towel that hasn’t been used on any other dishes or counters.

FAQs – Dish Soap For Baby Bottles

Do I still need to use a bottle sterilizer after washing it with special soap?

Sterilizing with a bottle sterilizer is the safer way of removing bacteria and viruses than antibacterial soap. Definitely use one after washing the bottles to make sure everything is very clean for your baby. While it isn’t a necessity, it’s better for your sanity to know that your baby will have the cleanest bottles possible with the cleanest ingredients possible.

What could be cleaner than hot air!

Should I use baby bottle dish soap on all of my dishes?

Whether you use the soap on all of the dishes is up to you. While it’s often a little more costly, baby bottle soaps are often cleaner ingredient-wise and can improve your health. Also, the soap can be gentler on your hands.

However, it’s not designed to reduce heavy-duty stains and debris like other dish soaps. If you don’t have a dishwasher or don’t like to soak your dishes, you may want to consider a stronger soap for other dishes.

Also, you can choose one of the soaps above designed to be gentle on baby bottles and strong enough for pots and pans.

Can I just toss baby bottles in the dishwasher?

Absolutely! Save your hands from washing by putting everything in the dishwasher!

It’s great for the environment too, as it uses less water than handwashing. Moreover, the water gets hotter, which means the dishwasher cleans better too.

If you aren’t sure the dishwasher is doing a good enough job, you can sterilize the bottles after for extra security in the safety of your baby’s bottles.
