These beds are usually rectangular and have solid rails. However, there are other designs, such as round cribs, that tend to be more costly and are sold in specialty stores and websites.
Convertible Cribs
Convertible cribs transform into different types of beds, usually through the use of a conversion kit. These conversions include transforming into a toddler bed, daybed, full-size bed, or twin bed. Most of the time these conversion kits are sold separately, though the toddler bed conversion sometimes accompanies your original purchase. Make sure to check what is included with the bed you choose to purchase to avoid being caught unaware once you have put the bed together.
Mini Cribs
A mini crib is just like a standard crib, only smaller! It measures 24 inches by 38 inches, compared to a normal crib’s 28 inches by 52 inches. Now, there are no regulations for how big a mini crib needs to be, so these measurements may vary just a bit from manufacturer to manufacturer. There are many things to consider when purchasing a bed for your baby. Some of these vary by your preferences and others are strict crib safety standards set by the CPSC to ensure the safety of infants and toddlers.
The AAP (American Academy of Pediatrics) recommends always putting baby to sleep on their back on a firm surface to reduce the risk of SIDS (Sudden Infant Death Syndrome) and to keep the crib as bare as possible to avoid suffocation hazards.
The Right Size
Make sure your crib is of sufficient size to hold your baby. If your baby is very tiny, you may wish to start with a bassinet at first. If you have a larger or older baby, make sure the crib you are using is rated to support your baby’s size and weight.
