The Camera

The camera included with the DXR-8 system is awesome because it has an interchangeable lens. This allows you to set it up so that it’s at exactly the right angle and focus for wherever you have the camera. You can use a close-up lens that allows for excellent zoom, you can use a panoramic lens to get a full view of your child’s activity, or you can use the normal aluminum lens hood (the wide-angle lens is not included and will have to be purchased separately). This means that whether you are at mid-range, far away, or anywhere in between, you can get the perfect view of your baby.

The camera also features pan, tilt, and zoom functions. It can move 270 degrees from side to side, or 120 degrees up or down. It can zoom in, even without the special zoom lens. These movements are quiet and discreet and are controlled by the monitor.

The camera features built-in LED lights that helped it to have invisible infrared night vision. That means that you’ll get real-time, streamed video, even in the middle of the night.

Finally, the camera has a built-in speaker so that you can have a 2-way talking system. You hear baby cry on the monitor, and you can press a button and speak to the baby through the camera.

And if that weren’t enough, the camera also picks up on the temperature in the room, so that you know your baby is safe and comfortable 24/7. All this is powered by an AC power adapter, so just remember that you’ll have to set your camera up near a wall plug.

Oh, and since we’re talking about baby monitors for multiple rooms, we better mention the fact that you can add up to four cameras on one system with this baby monitor. Additional Infant Optics Add-On Camera Units are available for purchase, but they come at a very reasonable price. The cameras that you add are the same camera that comes with this system, so you don’t have to worry about compatibility issues.

The Monitor

The lovely little monitor featured with the Infant Optics DXR-8 baby monitor system has a 3.5 inch LCD color display. The monitor is slim and extremely portable. It gives you a decent picture of your child in full color, from anywhere.

It has a rechargeable long life battery. And you don’t have to buy an extra rechargeable battery, it’s already included with the starter system. This battery allows for 10 hours if you’re using the monitor in power saving mode, or 6 hours with a constant display.

Which leads me to the different modes. There’s one mode called power saving mode, which turns the screen off but keeps audio on. You can choose whether you’d like to turn off the display after 5 minutes, 3 minutes, or all the time. It’s easy and straightforward to do from the menu. Not only does this help your battery life last about 50% longer, but it allows you to have an audio-only monitor if that’s what you’d like.

Once you’ve got your multiple cameras, you can even use this in scan mode. In that mode, the monitor shows each camera for a few seconds and then switches to the next camera. It cycles through the system continually so you can see each camera in your system. This makes it nice for keeping an eye on kids in separate rooms at the same time.

A few more added bonuses are the ability of the monitor display to stand alone. It’s got a little kickstand on the back that allows you to sit down and look at it, so you don’t have to hold it or lay it down to see it. The antenna, which gives it a really good range of roughly 700 feet, is retractable, so you can bend it down if you’re just in the next room over and don’t want this annoying thing sticking out.

It also has a 2-way talking feature I already mentioned, where there’s a talk button that allows you to pretty much turn this thing into a walkie-talkie. You can also adjust the brightness display on the monitor for proper viewing during daylight hours or nighttime hours.

This thing is ridiculously easy to use and setup. It features a plug and play system that doesn’t require hours of setup. As a secure 2.4 GHz FHSS wireless transmission. This allows you to have 100% privacy and delay free video and audio playback. No worrying about your images being uploaded to some server somewhere or being hacked by someone on the internet.

Biggest Complaints

  • It has good battery life, but not great battery life. And another common complaint with this system is that it doesn’t properly keep track of the charge. That means that you might be surprised by getting angry beeping noises when your monitor is about to die. Also, the older the system gets, the less charge it holds. This is similar to most electronics, like our cell phones. You’ll just have to figure out your own schedule where you have this thing plugged in for several hours a day.
  • The range isn’t that great. It’s only seven hundred feet, which is a lot less than other baby monitors on the market. And that’s not to mention the fact that interference from your cell phone and thick walls tend to stump the system. You might be finding yourself getting in and “np signal” message on the screen, which eliminates all video and audio feed, when you are still in your house just a room away.
  • Back to the issue of interference. This system is easily interfered with if you’re too close to a cell phone or other wireless device, like maybe a TV or a gaming system. When this happens, it’ll randomly beep loudly and say “out of range,” even if you haven’t moved.
  • The thermometer thing is great, but I wish it was more accurate. Across-the-board, users find that the thermometer is off by about four or five degrees. That means that you might freak out thinking it’s way too hot in a certain room when it’s not. So just go into this knowing to subtract about 4 degrees from the temperature reading every time you look at it.

Final Take

Overall, this is a decent baby monitor. It’s about $100 cheaper than a lot of the other comparable baby monitors on the market. It allows you to have up to four cameras, which makes it a great baby monitor for multiple rooms. The overall quality is so-so. The screen is okay and the video is decently clear. It has the potential to have good range, if it weren’t for the fact that the signal is interfered with so easily. The quality of the product definitely goes downhill after a few months of use, but that’s to be expected of a less expensive and non-name brand product.

In the end, I still think it’s the best baby monitor for multiple rooms that doesn’t require WiFi.

Best WiFi Baby Monitor for Multiple Rooms

The phone is the center of the parenting universe. How lost would we be without that thing to keep track of our schedules, our memories, our recipes, and our fun? If you want to incorporate your baby monitor into your phone for better user-friendliness, then this baby monitor is for you.

The Camera

This cute little baby camera has amazing high-definition. It has 720p HD video feed, which means it’s actually clear video feed, even at night. This camera has pan, tilt, and zoom features. You can turn it 360 degrees or tilt it 110 degrees up or down giving you almost complete access to the baby’s room. You can also zoom in or out from the controls on your mobile device.

This unit features night vision. It has built-in LED lights that provide enough light to record video without disturbing the baby. The result is a clear and easily visible picture in grayscale on your phone/monitor.

The camera unit features an awesome array of additional features. It has a 2-way audio system and an echo canceling feature. There’s also a music player, so you can play one of the pre-loaded lullabies for your baby. You can even record your own voice and add it to your monitor’s library, so you can play soothing statements or bedtime stories to your kiddo. All this happens using the speaker at the back of the camera unit.

The camera also features temperature and humidity sensors to keep track of the environment in baby’s room.

The Monitor

The camera is cool and all, but the coolest part of the system is the monitor. That’s because the monitor is actually your phone! You download the iBaby Care App from either the Apple App Store or the Google Play Store. After an easy 60 second installation, you can connect your phone to the camera via WiFi. Then, as long as you’re connected to WiFi, or even if you have 4G LTE coverage, you’ll get high definition video streaming directly to your phone. Did I mention that you can even download this app on your tablet and use that as well?

Once you’ve got the app, you can use it to control all of the features from your phone. You can control the music player, you can look at the video feed and even record pictures or videos from the camera feed. Use the swipe of your finger to change your camera’s angle. Your phone can easily manage your smart alerts, which is an awesome system that takes pictures and videos when it senses that the baby is crying or moving around. You’ll get the alert as a notification on your phone, which means you don’t have to constantly be staring at your phone waiting for something to happen.

This password-secured WiFi connection can work anywhere. That means that you don’t have to worry about connectivity issues unless you drop off of WiFi. Even then, if you have 4G coverage you’ll be okay. That means that you can look at baby from home, work, or anywhere in between. The secure server is backed by Amazon Web Services, so there’s a really great level of privacy protection.

Another great feature is that you can add users to view the video and audio feed. That means that if you want Dad, Grandma and Grandpa, the babysitter, or another trusted person to keep an eye on your baby, you just have them download the app and you can add them to your camera’s feed. There’s even an awesome sleep feature for this, which means that no one but the main user can view the system at night time.

The last feature I should mention is the ability to add extra cameras. Within the app, there’s a drop-down menu you can choose which camera you like to view. You can add as many cameras as you need within this app to give you the best baby monitor for multiple rooms.

Biggest Complaints

  • This isn’t wall-mountable. You have to buy a separate small shelf to mount it to the wall or build some kind of shelf of your own to make it wall-mountable.
  • The ability to have many cameras on one app is nice, but it is a bummer that there’s no scan feature. You have to manually go into each camera to look at it, which just takes a lot longer and is less convenient.
  • The ability to pick up noise is great, but it stinks if you have some kind of white noise machine in the baby’s room, including a fan. That means that you’ll kindly be receiving alerts that there’s a noise coming from baby’s room, when in fact it’s just the sound of that white noise.
  • Since all video and pictures taken through this app restored on your phone, you have to have a lot of storage to run this thing. That, or you have to have a cloud backup system for infinite storage.
  • The tilt feature is great, but it’s really hard to make this unit look down. It does tilt down, but only to a certain point, which means that if you’ve installed it high up in the room or on a shelf above the crib or something, it’s really difficult to get it to look down. Just play with the angle of this thing before you mount it!
  • Finally, like all things that run on WiFi, it can be finicky. If your WiFi signal goes down temporarily or gets low for a bit, your video feed might lag and your controls might not work as well. Got to love technology!

Final Take

This is a fantastic piece of technology. It offers all of the advantages of a full baby monitor for multiple rooms without a big price tag. And, you don’t have to worry about a separate monitor, since you’re using your phone as a monitor. I have found that this baby monitor really does have great video and has really great additional features, like the ability to add my husband as another user so that he can use it on his phone too. Yes, it does have a wonky tilt angle, and yes, it does totally depend on WiFi. I know that our WiFi signal goes on the fritz occasionally and as a result, the app wouldn’t connect, or camera wouldn’t work, or we’d have some other technological difficulty.

In the end, though, I still like this more than a traditional baby monitor and this is my personal pick for the best baby monitor for multiple rooms.
